Chapter 186: Chapter 189: A Safe Delivery
Pain. A gut-wrenching, soul-tearing pain.
It was as if her body was being ripped into a million pieces, then crudely stitched back together with rusty steel needles, only to be torn apart again, stitched, and torn apart once more...
The indescribable agony consumed Sonia Quincy. She couldn’t feel her own existence anymore. All she felt was pain—so much pain she wanted to die.
"Push! Squeeze my hand and push!!"
"Hang in there! We’ve given you the pain relief. It won’t hurt as much in a moment!"
The doctor’s voice echoed dimly in her ears. Sonia Quincy couldn’t think; she could only follow the instructions in a daze.
She didn’t know when they had administered the pain relief, nor did she know how far along she was in labor. All she felt was pain. All she wanted was to run.
"Push!!!"
"Deep breaths! Keep taking deep breaths!!"
The doctor’s shouts rained down. Sonia Quincy clenched her jaw, summoning what felt like every last ounce of strength she had ever possessed in her life.
"AHHH!!!"
"It hurts too much!!! I’m never having another baby!!!"
"Felix Preston, you bastard!! When I get out of here, I’m going to beat you senseless!!"
She cursed as she pushed. After what felt like an eternity, the pain finally began to subside.
"The baby’s out! The baby’s out!"
"The baby is out!!"
Sonia Quincy was still in a daze when she suddenly heard the doctor at the foot of the bed cry out in excitement.
"Hm?" She weakly pried her eyelids open, her gaze wandering aimlessly across the ceiling. "The baby’s out? Where?"
"WAH... WAH..."
Her answer came in the form of a newborn’s cry.
Her brow twitched. Her scattered consciousness snapped back into focus, and the cloudy haze in her eyes instantly cleared.
"My baby..." She struggled to lift a trembling hand, reaching into the empty air. "Let me see my baby..."
"The baby’s right here." The doctor came over, carrying the child, and placed the tiny, swaddled infant beside Sonia Quincy. "Six pounds, three ounces. He’s a boy, and the initial checkup shows no problems."
"As long as he’s okay..." Sonia Quincy breathed a sigh of relief, then carefully studied the little one who had cost her half a lifetime in pain.
"He’s so tiny..." Seeing his little body, barely bigger than two of her palms, Sonia Quincy frowned, not even daring to touch him.
The doctor stood by and said with a smile, "Newborns are all this small. Here, Mama, touch his face. Feel how warm he is."
"I can’t," Sonia Quincy said, shaking her head again and again. "The little guy’s too small. I’m afraid I’ll break him."
"You won’t break him." The doctor simply took Sonia Quincy’s hand and guided it to the baby’s cheek.
A newborn’s skin was softer than silken tofu. Sonia Quincy couldn’t make out any distinct features—only that he was incredibly soft and small.
"He’s so cute..." Sonia Quincy gazed at his face, the corners of her mouth lifting into an unconscious smile. "Don’t people say newborns are all wrinkled like little old men? Why isn’t he that wrinkled?"
The doctor explained patiently, "It really depends. Not all babies are wrinkly when they’re born."
"Oh..." Sonia Quincy nodded. After saying that one word, her head fell limply back onto the pillow, and her eyelids fluttered closed.
The doctor gently picked up the baby and turned toward the door.
WHOOSH—
The heavy, dark green doors were pushed open from the inside, and the delivering doctor walked out, holding the baby.
Felix Preston rushed forward, the first to reach the doctor.
The doctor smiled, holding the baby out for him to see. "Six pounds, three ounces. He’s a boy, and the initial checkup shows no problems."
"Wow, what an adorable baby..."
Lynn Preston and the others crowded around, craning their necks to see the little one in the blanket.
"Mom, Dad, look," Mason Shaw said, his eyes red as he gazed at the baby’s face, a distinct catch in his voice. "This is Charlotte’s baby."
"I see him," Mr. Shaw said, wiping away tears as he nodded. "This is Charlotte’s baby. Our grandson."
"Mom, do you see your grandson?" Lynn Preston asked excitedly.
Mrs. Preston was a mess of tears and laughter. "I see him. He’s beautiful. He looks so much like Sonia."
Mina Jennings added, "He looks like his dad, too. That nose and mouth are a carbon copy."
"Here, let Dad have a hold." The doctor passed the baby into Felix Preston’s arms. Felix gingerly accepted him, touched the baby’s face once, and then immediately handed him to Mrs. Preston.
"Doctor, what about my wife?" he asked, grabbing the doctor’s arm, his voice trembling.
The doctor pointed back toward the delivery room. "Your wife is doing great. She’ll be out in just a moment."
No sooner had the words left her mouth than another doctor wheeled out a hospital bed carrying Sonia Quincy, who was fast asleep from exhaustion.
"Sonia!!"
Felix Preston sprinted forward, rushing anxiously yet carefully to Sonia Quincy’s bedside.
Sonia Quincy’s eyes were closed. She looked weak, her face pale and her lips chapped. Strands of sweat-dampened hair were plastered messily to her forehead.
"Sonia." The sight of her sent a sharp, searing pain through Felix Preston’s heart, as if it were being cut by a knife.
"Sonia..." He reached out to gently stroke her face. He blinked once, and tears began to fall, pattering down.
A scalding teardrop landed on Sonia Quincy’s cheek. Her eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes.
"Sonia..." His throat felt like it was stuffed with water-soaked cotton, clogging it so badly that every word Felix Preston uttered came out choked and ragged.
"Sonia, you’ve been through so much."
"Hmph..." Sonia Quincy pouted and shot him a fierce glare.
The doctor chuckled at her antics and couldn’t resist tattling. "Sir, you’d better be good to your wife from now on. Otherwise, watch out—she might just beat you senseless."
"...Huh?" Felix Preston was baffled.
Seeing his confusion, the doctor decided to explain.
"A little while ago in the delivery room, your wife..."
"Hey, hey, hey, hey—"
In front of so many people, Sonia Quincy was too embarrassed to let Felix Preston know she had been cursing him out while giving birth, so she started babbling nonsense to cut the doctor off.
"I’m sleepy! Quick, wheel me to the cafeteria!"
"...Huh?"
Everyone outside the delivery room was left completely dumbfounded.
...
She stopped talking, simply closing her eyes and feigning sleep.
Felix Preston watched her, a faint smile finally touching his lips.
"Go to sleep," he murmured, leaning down to place a gentle kiss on her forehead.
"Bloom..."
"Sonia?"
Only then did the group of onlookers dare to approach.
"Bloom, are you okay?" Mina Jennings asked, leaning over her.
Sonia Quincy opened her eyes and smiled at the small crowd. "I’m okay."
"Sonia," Mrs. Preston said, holding the baby while smiling through her tears. "You’ve been through so much."
Sonia Quincy raised a hand to pat her mother-in-law’s. "It might sound a little immodest," she said softly, "but I have to say it: giving birth is seriously hard work."
"Sister-in-law!" Lynn Preston seized the chance to grab her hand, bending down to nuzzle her cheek against the back of it.
Sonia Quincy replied, "Good girl, Lynn. From now on, your nephew is all yours to look after."
"No problem!" Lynn Preston declared with confidence. "I’ll be the best Nanny in all of Aethelburg!"
"Char... Sonia," Mason Shaw called out nervously, standing at the foot of the bed.
Sonia Quincy turned at the sound of her name, only then noticing him and the Shaw family standing behind him.
"Mr. Shaw..." Her eyes, which she struggled to keep wide open, trembled slightly. "Auntie, Uncle, and Hannah... you’re all here."
