Chapter 185: Chapter 188: Family Reunion Outside the Delivery Room
SLAM!
The delivery room door slammed shut, and Sonia Quincy vanished from Felix Preston’s sight.
THUD!
All strength left Felix Preston in an instant, and he collapsed wretchedly to his knees.
"Brother!"
Lynn Preston rushed forward in tears, trying to pull Felix Preston up from the floor, but he violently shook her hand away.
"Don’t touch me..." He knelt limply before the delivery room door, every ounce of his energy drained by an emotion called fear, leaving him pale and frail.
His usually ramrod-straight back was now slumped over, as if he could no longer weather any storm. And yet, he refused to collapse completely, still stubbornly guarding something precious.
"Brother..." Lynn Preston crouched beside him, wiping away her tears. "Please get up and wait."
"..." Felix Preston was too drained to speak. He could only give a weak shake of his head in refusal.
"Felix," Mina Jennings said, walking over to him and frowning. "Sonia will be fine. Can you please get up? Your left foot is horribly swollen. You need to see a doctor about it right away."
"..."
Felix Preston remained silent, merely shaking his head again and again.
Mina Jennings leaned down. "Sonia loves you so much. For her sake, so she won’t worry, will you please get up and have that foot looked at?"
"..."
Having lost all patience with her, this time Felix Preston didn’t even bother shaking his head.
Mina Jennings grew frantic. She was about to try persuading him again, but Jasper Linden suddenly reached out and stopped her.
"Don’t bother," Jasper Linden said softly, walking over to stand behind Felix. "No one’s going to get through to him until Sonia is out safely. Let him kneel. Think of it as a prayer for her."
"Then I’ll pray too!" Lynn Preston wiped the tears from her face, bent her knees, and knelt beside her brother.
"Please, Bodhisattva, please, Buddha, watch over my sister-in-law and grant her a safe delivery!"
Lynn Preston squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her hands together in devout prayer.
"Please, Bodhisattva, please, Buddha, grant my sister-in-law a safe delivery..."
"Please, Bodhisattva, please, Buddha, grant my sister-in-law a safe delivery..."
"Sigh..." Mina Jennings let out a breath and said nothing more.
She straightened up, turned to face the delivery room, and closed her eyes, offering a silent prayer for Sonia.
Julia Dawson, standing behind her, saw this and earnestly did the same.
...
A heavy silence fell over the hallway, broken only by the deafening sound of devout prayers.
"Did anyone let Mrs. Preston know?"
After a moment, Jasper Linden suddenly asked.
Renee Sinclair replied, "Yes. Lynn called Mrs. Preston a while ago. She should be on her way now."
"Mm," Jasper Linden nodded and said no more.
"Charlotte!"
"My Charlotte!"
"Sister! Where’s my sister?!"
Ear-splitting cries suddenly erupted from the corridor behind them. Mina and the others turned in unison to see Hannah Sutton and Mason Shaw supporting two elderly members of the Shaw family as they staggered toward the delivery room.
"Hannah?"
Julia Dawson, surprised to see them, hurried forward to help support the two distraught elders.
"What are you all doing here?" she asked, surprised.
"Where’s Charlotte?" Brianna Bell gripped her hand, her eyes wide as she stared intensely at her. "Where is my Charlotte? Where has my Charlotte gone?"
"...Huh?" Julia Dawson didn’t understand. "Ma’am, who’s Charlotte?"
"Charlotte is Sonia Quincy!" Mason Shaw had no time for a slow explanation, so he just shouted the unbelievable truth.
"Charlotte is Sonia Quincy, and Sonia Quincy is my sister! Where is my sister? Is she in the delivery room?"
"She went in about half an hour ago." Mina Jennings strode over. Seeing the desperate and emotional expressions on the faces of the Shaw family, she had a dawning suspicion.
"What do you mean, ’Charlotte is Sonia Quincy’?" she began tentatively. "Are you...?"
"We’re Sonia Quincy’s family!" Tears streamed down Jackson Shaw’s face. His frail, elderly body trembled and swayed with his sobs, like a leaf in the wind.
"Sonia... She’s our biological daughter, the one we’ve been searching for for five years. She isn’t some unwanted child—she’s my Charlotte!"
"...What?!"
At these words, everyone outside the delivery room was utterly dumbfounded.
"What did you say?" Felix Preston’s eyes flew open. He dragged himself up from the floor, a leg swollen purple beneath him, and limped toward Jackson Shaw.
"Careful!" Jasper Linden reached out to steady him, helping him get to Jackson Shaw.
"Say that again." He stared, wide-eyed, at Jackson Shaw and yelled in a hoarse voice, "Say that again! Who is Sonia Quincy to you?"
"Son..." Jackson Shaw raised a trembling hand and grasped Felix Preston’s wrist. Slowly, but with utter conviction, he said, "Sonia is my child. She’s the child I lost over twenty years ago!"
"For real?" Julia Dawson asked in disbelief. "Bloom Preston, is she really from your family?"
"It’s true!" Hannah Sutton roughly yanked open her bag and pulled out a DNA test report.
"I secretly took some of Sonia’s hair to get a DNA test. The results are in—she’s a daughter of the Shaw family!"
"She’s Charlotte Shaw! The Charlotte Shaw the family lost over twenty years ago!"
Felix Preston snatched the slim report and frantically scanned it, searching for the line that decided Sonia Quincy’s fate.
"There!" Jasper Linden spotted the line instantly and pointed it out to Felix.
Felix looked and saw a single line of bold text—
The analysis supports Jackson Shaw as the biological father of Sonia Quincy.
"..."
It was as if a bolt of lightning shot through Felix Preston’s mind. His world bleached white for an instant before it began to sway and crumble.
"Sonia..." The DNA report slipped from his hand. He looked up in disbelief at the tearful elderly couple before him.
"Sonia... is your daughter..."
"She is!" Jackson Shaw and Brianna Bell affirmed in unison.
"Sonia is my sister!" Mason Shaw declared, his eyes red, his face a mess of laughter and tears. "She’s my real sister!"
"..." Felix Preston let out a long, heavy breath, unable to tell if he felt happy or angry.
With bloodshot eyes, he looked from one member of the Shaw family to the next, then suddenly raised his hands to cover his face and sank helplessly to his knees again.
"Brother-in-law!"
Mason Shaw had already adopted the new title, and he rushed to crouch down, putting an arm around Felix’s shoulders.
"Son." Jackson Shaw crouched down beside him. He placed one hand on Felix’s shoulder and gently patted his head with the other, his eyes filled with a mixture of heartbreak and gratitude.
"Son, thank you for loving my Charlotte. Thank you, truly!"
"Son-in-law," Brianna Bell said, also changing her address. "We’re a family. We’ll wait for Charlotte together. She’ll be all right."
"...AHHHH!"
The only answer they received was Felix Preston’s torrential, cathartic howl.
