Chapter 337: Chapter 337: Probing
He looked at the woman driving the car, recalling the scene from yesterday.
He felt she was quite similar to those psychos he knew.
Every last one of them was mentally unstable and pathologically self-indulgent.
But those people had spent too long in the apocalypse, constantly surrounded by oppression and bloodshed, so their minds had gradually become twisted.
But what about the woman in front of him? What was her excuse? She had only been in the apocalypse for a few years...
And she was living quite well—worlds better than most people, in fact.
’So why is she like this too?’
"Stop looking at me like I’m a psycho."
Seeing his stare grow increasingly strange, Stella Sterling spoke up, her eyes tinged with displeasure.
After hearing Stella Sterling’s words, Andrew Shaw’s gaze slowly returned to normal. He looked at her with an innocent expression. "What are you saying, Miss? I don’t understand."
’Psychos never like being called psychos.’ Andrew Shaw felt a pang of anxiety.
He was afraid his stare had displeased her.
The car came to a stop. Stella Sterling found a spot with some cover.
It had been light out for a while, and the sun was beginning to rise.
The temperature was already rising rapidly compared to the cool of the night.
Even inside the vehicle, Stella Sterling could feel the scorching heat as the sunlight streamed in.
Day had broken again. Since this spot was decent, Stella Sterling decided to rest here for the day and resume their journey at night.
She looked back at Andrew Shaw and chuckled. "How could you possibly not understand?"
Andrew Shaw gave her an even more baffled look, as if he had no idea what she was talking about.
Stella Sterling said nothing, just continued to watch him with a cryptic smile.
Her stare gave Andrew Shaw the creeps. He had no idea why she was looking at him like that.
He carefully reviewed his actions. ’Aside from that one slip-up at the very beginning, my performance has been flawless. I haven’t revealed anything else.’
Reassured, he changed the subject. "Are we resting here? Not pushing on?"
"That’s right, we’re resting here for a bit. But before we do, we need to find some food. Go search the area. See if you can find any edible wild plants or something. You’re responsible for your own meal today."
Hearing this, Andrew Shaw’s jaw dropped. "Miss, I’m the one who has to go look?"
"Who else? You expect me to go?"
Stella Sterling stared at him, her expression turning dangerous.
After a moment’s thought, Andrew Shaw said, "But I can see you still have food here, Miss. There’s no need to go looking."
"This is mine. If you want to eat, you’ll have to find your own way. Of course, if you’d rather starve, you don’t have to go."
Stella Sterling said, watching him.
Andrew Shaw seethed with indignation.
’The temperature outside is scorching. If I go out in broad daylight, I’ll be baked alive!’
’More importantly, where am I supposed to find anything to eat in a place like this?’
He knew she was doing this on purpose, just to make things difficult for him.
Despite his thoughts, he asked cautiously, "Miss, could you please give me a little something to eat first? I’m just a kid. I’ll repay you when I’m older."
Stella Sterling propped her leg up on the adjacent seat, tilting her head as she looked at him. "How could you possibly not find anything?"
Andrew Shaw stared back, again sensing something strange in her words.
If he had been holding out hope before, her words now made him almost certain. ’She definitely knows something.’
The expression on his young face grew calm. He said nothing.
A moment later, he opened the car door and stepped out.
Stella Sterling didn’t stop him, observing his every move.
’I’m quite curious,’ she thought. ’Does this person who traveled back in time have any special abilities?’
The result, however, was somewhat disappointing. After getting out, he just ran around like a headless chicken, searching aimlessly and digging through clumps of grass.
He didn’t seem like someone with special abilities.
’Of course, it’s also possible he’s just very good at hiding them.’
She’d forgotten to ask him about that yesterday, but it didn’t really matter.
’It’s fine if I can’t smoke him out. He’s completely under my control now, so I have nothing to worry about.’
’For now, I just want to play with him a little. The journey is dull, after all. When I get bored of the game, I’ll just reveal what I know and give him the shock of his life.’
At this thought, Stella Sterling burst out laughing.
Andrew Shaw hadn’t gone far. Hearing the peals of laughter from the car, he was utterly baffled.
’That woman really is a psycho. Laughing like that for no reason.’
’Weirdo. What a complete and utter weirdo!’
He mumbled to himself but could only continue his search obediently.
Stella Sterling watched from the car. Before long, the boy disappeared from sight.
Stella Sterling wasn’t concerned. She knew he’d be back before long.
Sure enough, Andrew Shaw was only gone for a moment before he returned.
This time, however, he was holding something in his hands.
Stella Sterling glanced over. It looked like some kind of wild fruit.
Andrew Shaw ran back toward the car. In just that short time outside, his clothes were completely drenched with sweat, and his hair was matted as if it had been soaked in water.
He quickly scrambled into the car and shut the door, not forgetting to hand a wild fruit to Stella Sterling. "Miss, I just found these. You should have one. They’re good."
Stella Sterling took the fruit and bit into it without hesitation. "Not bad. Tell me, since you’re so useful, why would your parents abandon you?"
Stella’s tone was mocking. ’Even if his parents didn’t know he was a time traveler, they should have been able to tell something was off from the way he talks.’
’He’s clearly shown some unusual traits in his fight for survival.’
’Could his parents really not have noticed?’
"Who knows. They’ll definitely regret abandoning me."
A surge of resentment filled Andrew Shaw at the mention of them, and he spoke with unconscious fury.
The moment the words left his mouth, he realized his mistake and whipped his head toward Stella Sterling.
’What did she mean by that?’
’What did she mean, ’so useful’?!’
’She really does know something! But how is that possible? All I did was give her that one warning.’
’Even if what I said was a little strange, how could she be so sharp? How could she have figured out so much from just that one little thing?’
He even suspected that she might already know everything.
’But what normal person’s mind would immediately jump to that conclusion?’
"You know something, don’t you, Miss!"
Andrew Shaw looked at Stella Sterling, his tone probing.
