After leaving Karina to deal with her former family, Aiden sat on the couch and closed his eyes.
[Supervision is active.]
When he opened his eyes, he was following a group of ghouls. Prior to getting into his apartment last night, he had set the ghouls free to look for settlements outside the barrier.
Although he told the system he had no intention of expanding again so soon, his actions proved otherwise. Well... technically, he had sent them away because he really wanted to check out his [Soul Snatch] skill.
That said, he had no desire to possess a ghoul. That's why he sent them to look for a settlement. That way, he would possess someone there and cause havoc, ahem, pass his time.
"Let's see… did you find anything interesting?" Aiden mumbled, following the ghoul.
The ghoul, as if sensing his presence, stopped and turned towards a distant building.
"You saw something there? I see, head over and let me check."
The ghoul grunted and ran towards what seemed to be a college campus.
The ghoul slowed as it approached the rusted gates of the campus.
Aiden, riding along in supervision mode, scanned the area. Most of the buildings were dark, but he could see flickers of fire here and there.
So, people do live here.
Although that was what he wanted the ghoul to find, Aiden knew there had to be something else. The ghoul tilted its head and walked outside to a parking lot.
A young man, couldn't have been older than twenty, was slumped against the base of a concrete pillar. Most of his legs were chewed through, what remained was covered in blood.
For all reason, he seemed dead, but when the ghoul stepped closer, the young man's eyes opened halfway. Even Aiden was taken aback that the boy was still alive.
The kid, however, couldn't see Aiden, just the ghoul. Whatever small strength he had left, he used to press himself harder against the pillar, trying to seem big to scare the beast, but his tears betrayed him.
"No… no, please…"
His hands trembled just like his voice as he tried to raise them, but couldn't. He was too weak to do anything other than blink and cry for mercy.
Aiden looked at the boy and shook his head. A boy was dying. Big deal. He was about to leave to check out one of the rooms in the building when he heard the boy say something.
"Mom…" he whispered. "I'm sorry. I tried… I really tried to come back. I should not have… listened to them… and tried to get food… they killed me…"
Aiden wanted to know what happened to the boy, but after speaking his grievances to the grim reaper, his soul left his body.
"Interesting…" Aiden mumbled, looking at the corpse. "You have successfully piqued my interest, boy. I wonder what other secrets are you hiding?"
He squatted next to the boy and touched the boy's head. As soon as he did, a prompt appeared before him.
[Adequate body found for Soul Snatch.]
[Would you like to use the skill?]
"Might as well."
The next moment, Aiden felt like his soul was actually torn away from his body, and he got worried. Demon King or human, no one enjoyed the feeling of 'dying'.
[Don't worry, Host. I'll possess, I mean, preserve your body till you get back.]
"Woman, you better not get any funny ideas," Aiden warned her before everything went black and he 'woke up'. "Ugh, I feel like I got run over by a dozen trucks…"
[Passive: Massive Heal is in effect. Please wait.]
"Oh, I can still use my skills. That's handy."
Massive Heal could save him from even the deadliest of wounds, but it took a while to heal. So while it repaired the boy's body, Aiden got to work going through his memories.
It wasn't anything extraordinary, not until the apocalypse broke out and the guy's bully, Zayn, awakened as an Evolver.
"A better physique and charisma to manipulate anyone. Ugh, I can already see where this is going…"
Sure enough, the boy whose body he possessed was a not-so-proud owner of a green hat. Zayn had taken the boy's crush, his ex, and his sister right before him.
Moreover, those women made his life hell afterwards to score points with Zayn. The boy had tolerated it all in the hopes of also awakening and taking his revenge.
But before that happened, he still got on Zayn's nerves, and he kicked him out earlier today. That's how he had ended up fighting barehanded against monsters and died.
A sad story indeed.
Aiden could now leave his body and go on his merry way… if not for one thing.
"I feel disgusted."
Looking into people's memories had one sickening effect. It made one feel like they were their memories and not of a stranger.
In other words, Aiden felt like the survivors of the college campus had wronged him, not the boy known as Nathan. And Aiden did not let people who wronged him go unpunished.
[Healing complete.]
"Since," Aiden grunted, getting up. "I have possessed your body, might as well avenge your death. Hm… It's going to be fun."
As he said that, he looked at the flickering firelight on the third floor of the building. The place had a clear view of the spot the boy had died. They must have seen him dying and didn't do a thing.
"Tsk, what a sickening thing to do…" he shook his head disapprovingly. "Only I have the right to do these things. No one else."
After sending the ghoul on his merry way, Aiden opened his shop. A minute later, he had a sling bag on his shoulder full of food and a kukri in his hand.
He took a step, then turned around. The kukri looked too plain for what he had in mind, so he squatted next to the spot where the boy had bled out and smeared his blood over the blade.
"Nice, now it looks like a fighter's weapon."
