Aiden walked toward the building with the flickering flames. At this moment, the curtains were tightly closed, but silhouettes of people moving around could be seen clearly.
"What rotten luck did you have, boy? You died there, and not even your sister cared enough to take a look," Aiden sighed, climbing the floors.
However, instead of forcing his way in, he turned his kukri around and used the hard metal end of the handle to knock on the door three times.
The chattering ceased, and silence fell inside the room. Slowly, someone removed the barrier and peeked outside.
"…who is there?" A feminine voice asked.
Aiden realized this was the voice of Nathan's sister. He smiled, and instead of telling her who he was, he unzipped the bag filled with food and showed it to her.
Seeing the bag filled with snacks, she yanked the door open, intending to take the food, but froze when he saw the smiling figure before her.
"N-Nathan!?" she shrieked, stumbling backwards.
"Ah, my dear sis, what's gotten into you?" Aiden smiled, walking inside.
The survivors inside were curled up in corners or sitting on desks. Most of them were women or at least had feminine features.
The only 'man' in the room was Zayn, who had been hugging a woman who was their teacher once. They all, apart from Zayn, looked thin and tired.
Aiden saw the boy and nodded in acknowledgement. The fool had been living a similar dream, like he was in the apartment, minus the resources he could conjure.
It seemed Zayn had either ousted or killed every other man, just like he did with Nathan. Surprisingly, he didn't have any memories of it.
Oh well, what does it matter?
Aiden smiled and turned to see Zayn's pale face. He looked outside the window and then back at Nathan. The others had similar reactions, which was to be expected.
It hadn't been that long since Zayn had led a group of people to push Nathan out like trash. They left him to die outside… only for him to be back.
But Aiden did not care about their reaction. He walked to the big table near the door and put the sling bag on it.
He opened the bag and started taking out the food one by one. There were packets of biscuits, bread, chips, and some canned drinks.
"Guys, I went out to get some food for all of us," Aiden said in a friendly voice. "Sorry it took so long. The streets were full of monsters. But look, I brought enough for everyone."
The people stared at the food with hungry eyes. To them, it seemed like a nightmare. How come someone they had seen die was back and with so much food?
As they were wondering, Aiden turned to them, acting shocked that they hadn't taken a step towards the food.
"Come on, Zayn. Don't just stand there," Aiden said with a smile. "You too, sis! Come help me open these packets. We can all eat together like old times.
"N-Nathan... how are you... alive?" another girl stammered, holding Zayn's shoulder.
One after another, the girls expressed concern for him, and some even began crying in relief that he was back. If Nathan had been there, he would have melted and cried along with them.
Zayn was hoping for that as he gestured for the feminine-looking boys to step closer to Aiden. They would use the girls as cover and attack Nathan.
After all, Zayn didn't care about how the hell Nathan was alive, he only saw the food and wanted to have it all.
Unfortunately, it wasn't Nathan they were facing. Aiden had already seen through what the boys wanted to do, yet allowed them to get closer.
Soon, the door was closed off Aiden's reach as the men got closer. However, before they could even touch a single hair on his head, Aiden swung the kukri and the head of the closest guy was sent flying.
The head hit the floor with a loud thud and rolled slowly toward the table while the boy's body hit the ground. The stump where his head had once been was spurting out blood like a fountain.
"Ahhh! He killed someone! Help! He really killed someone!"
Everyone in the room shrieked in horror. The girls screamed and backed away. Some covered their mouths. Zayn's face turned even whiter. His body shook with fear.
Aiden looked down at the rolling head with wide eyes. He acted surprised as if it wasn't his doing.
"What? Why did that happen? Was he so malnourished that his head just fell off?" Aiden said, shaking his head. "Come on, guys, do not be scared. It was just an accident. Let's eat the food. Actually, you know what, let me just call you one after another for food."
As he looked around, everyone was turned quiet. Some of the girls were so scared that they wet their pants, filling the room with a fishy smell.
Meanwhile, Zayn swallowed his saliva. He had a small knife in his trouser band.
He had used it to threaten people before, but after seeing the blood-stained kukri in Aiden's hand, the blade suddenly felt too heavy, and he couldn't even pull it out no matter how much he tried.
Zayn felt that if he took out the knife, his own head would roll on the floor in the next second. It was a misconception, as Aiden didn't want to kill him so easily.
Instead, his eyes scanned the scared people until his gaze fell on Nathan's sister. She was hiding in the darkest corner of the room, shaking with fear.
"Sis, why are you hiding there?" Aiden asked, keeping his voice soft like Nathan's. "Come here. I brought food for you. You must be very hungry after all this time."
Nathan's sister did not move. She just shook her head as tears ran down her cheeks. Seeing her reaction, Aiden smiled and took a packet of biscuits. He opened it and held it out toward his sister.
"I already told you, it was an accident," he said, pointing at the headless corpse. "That guy came too close and I got scared. Come and eat something. After all, we are family, right? We care for each other. That's why I went through a lot of trouble to bring this food back for you. Come, have some."
