Chapter 124: Chapter 124 Roadside Rescue

Author

Soon she saw Yardley get out of the car.

He walked over to her car. His suit looked perfect, like he just came from an important meeting.

Nancy quickly checked how she looked in the mirror.

"Car trouble?" Yardley asked coolly.

He looked at her car, taking in the steam and flashing lights. His voice was calm, like this happened every day.

Nancy was so stressed she forgot to greet him properly. "Yes," she said.

She ran her fingers through her hair. She probably looked like a mess. Her jacket was wrinkled and she felt sweaty from stress.

"Need help?"

Nancy didn’t want to bother Yardley, but she was really running out of time.

She looked at her watch again. 3:27 PM. She hated asking for help, but what choice did she have?

"I have a meeting with a tax official. I’m already late. Could you maybe..."

Her voice got quiet. She felt embarrassed asking for another favor from him.

Before she could finish, Yardley took charge. "Louis, call a tow truck. Have them take the car to get fixed."

"Don’t worry. He’ll handle everything," he told her.

Nancy exchanged phone numbers with Louis.

She thanked them over and over. "Thank you so much for helping me."

Yardley raised an eyebrow. "Which tax office?"

Nancy tried to say no politely. "That’s okay. I can just take a taxi."

"Let’s go. When you make an appointment, being late just makes things worse," he said simply.

Nancy told him where to go.

Yardley smiled. "Perfect. I have a meeting next door. It’s on my way."

Sitting in Yardley’s car again, Nancy felt she really needed to thank him properly.

"Mr. Wolfe, I really owe you. When are you and Orion free? I want to buy you dinner. We could invite Elara and her husband too."

With Elara there, Nancy thought it would be less awkward.

Yardley answered quickly. "My brother is busy."

Maybe he realized that sounded too harsh. He added more gently, "He and his mate are probably busy with wedding stuff for next month."

"I’ll need to check my schedule. But I should be more free than they are."

[Someone that busy with free time? ]

Nancy remembered Orion mentioning that his father barely has time for family dinners, let alone anything else.

She found Yardley’s claim hard to believe. But she kept her doubts to herself.

Fortunately, they reached their destination in thirty minutes.

She got out of the car, bent slightly, and waved to him from outside. "Thank you again, Mr. Wolfe. I’ll head in now."

Yardley nodded slightly. "Alright, go ahead."

He watched Nancy walk quickly toward the building before driving away, his wolf oddly satisfied at having helped her.

Regional Manager Smith spotted Yardley’s license plate and frowned. He gripped his coffee mug and quickly approached the security guard. "Where did that woman who just signed in go?"

"To the main office building, Mr. Smith. She’s here to see Revenue Agent Johnson."

Regional Manager Smith immediately called David Johnson.

Nancy found Room 305, but the office was empty.

After asking around, she learned the revenue agent had gone to the restroom.

She sat in a chair waiting with her bag.

Soon she saw David Johnson hurry in, shaking water from his hands.

He extended his hand. "You must be the finance director from Park Hotel Group?"

Nancy was surprised by the revenue agent’s enthusiasm. Hadn’t she been told he was unreasonable?

She shook his hand briefly, smiling. "Hello, Mr. Johnson. Please, just call me Nancy."

"I heard from my team about the compliance issues flagged in our system. I’m here to clear things up."

David Johnson sat at his computer and found their previously submitted paperwork from a stack of documents. "Oh, I already resolved this issue with your payroll documentation today. It’s all cleared up. Sorry, I forgot to notify you. You made this trip for nothing."

Nancy found this strange.

[ Just this morning, he had insisted she come in person. Now it was suddenly approved?]

Still, getting it resolved was good news. Nancy smiled. "Thank you, Mr. Johnson. If there are any future issues, please contact my colleague Louis in accounting."

"Absolutely. You know, Ms. Miller, you have to understand. We get so many directives from the regional office. We’re completely overwhelmed!"

Nancy smiled and made small talk before leaving.

If she’d known there was nothing to resolve, she wouldn’t have troubled Yardley.

As Nancy headed downstairs, ready to call Louis, she didn’t notice a white sedan pulling up beside her.

She walked over confused and saw Louis getting out.

"Ms. Miller, Mr. Wolfe asked me to pick you up. The black car earlier was Mr. Wolfe’s company vehicle, which wasn’t convenient. Now I’ll take you to the repair shop."

Nancy was clearly surprised. "That’s really not necessary. I can take a taxi. You’ve already helped me so much."

Louis smiled politely. "Mr. Wolfe gave me clear instructions. I need to follow them."

Nancy shifted uncomfortably. "Alright. Thank you."

She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was asking for too many favors lately.

As if reading her mind, Yardley’s text came through moments later:

[Don’t worry about Louis - he’s got nothing better to do anyway. You’re Elara’s friend, which makes you family. Besides, I still owe you for finding Orion that day.]

Nancy’s shoulders relaxed as she read his message.

When he put it that way, maybe she wasn’t being such a burden after all.
