Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Mutual Injury
The Single-horned Rhinoceros struggled and thrashed. To prevent it from running wild, Hu Yan swiftly ensnared its horn with his whip.
Seeing the arrow pierce its eye, Yan Yichen cried out in delight, "It worked!"
"ROAR—"
The Single-horned Rhinoceros thrashed about wildly in pain. After the forceful strike, the arrow formed from spiritual power dissipated on its own.
But with one of its eyes injured, the Single-horned Rhinoceros grew even more frenzied, charging at anyone it saw.
It was blindingly fast and powerful. Yue Junxiao was quick enough to dodge aside, but Lang Qiu was a step too slow and was sent flying by the enraged Single-horned Rhinoceros’s horn.
"THUD—"
Lang Qiu crashed to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Yue Junxiao, who was closest, immediately ran over. He helped Lang Qiu up and leaned him against a tree. "How are you? Is it serious?"
Lang Qiu clutched his bleeding waist. "I’ll manage."
As he spoke, he also took out medicine from his storage space, tearing away the cloth over the injury to reveal the wound on his side.
The Single-horned Rhinoceros had gored him in the side, leaving a nasty gash. Yue Junxiao quickly poured styptic powder on it.
Just then, the Single-horned Rhinoceros charged in their direction again. Hu Yan ensnared its horn with his whip, and Yan Yichen seized the opportunity to fire several arrows at it, inflicting numerous wounds.
But with its horn bound by Hu Yan’s whip, it couldn’t break free. Meanwhile, the attacks kept coming. While each individual hit wasn’t very damaging, the constant barrage of small wounds became agonizing, and it had no way to relieve the pain.
It panted heavily, hot air snorting from its nostrils with every breath.
Every time it tried to charge, Hu Yan’s pull held it back. The beast’s hatred instantly fixed on him. ’If it weren’t for this Beastman, I would’ve gored the ones who hurt me long ago!’
One of the Single-horned Rhinoceros’s eyes was bleeding, while the other glared viciously at them as it panted heavily. Suddenly, it spun around and charged forcefully at Hu Yan.
"Watch out!"
In the nick of time, Hu Yan leaped into the air. He used his spiritual power to briefly halt the beast’s movement as an arrow he had condensed plunged straight into its other eye.
"ROAR—"
’These detestable Beastmen!!’
The Single-horned Rhinoceros’s hide was incredibly tough. As an S-level Beast, its body was even stronger. Ordinary attacks were largely useless, only capable of leaving minor wounds. But no matter how impregnable it seemed, it still had weak points. Hitting those weaknesses meant the battle was half-won.
With both its eyes pierced, the Single-horned Rhinoceros could only attack blindly and indiscriminately.
Just then, Sang Mo used his Flame Gun, channeling his superpower to spray fire at the beast. Now blind, the Single-horned Rhinoceros was hit squarely by the flames.
"HOWL—"
Engulfed in flames, the Single-horned Rhinoceros scrambled about wildly before collapsing to the ground. "CRASH—"
The ground shook from the impact.
The Single-horned Rhinoceros then sprayed water over itself and rolled on the ground, rubbing its body against the earth to extinguish the remaining flames. "HUFF... PUFF... HUFF..."
While it was on the ground, Sang Mo thrust his Flame Gun toward its heart.
But the rhino’s hide was simply too tough. The weapon couldn’t pierce it, only managing to leave a sizable gash on the surface.
"ROAR—"
After extinguishing the flames, the Single-horned Rhinoceros scrambled to its feet. Panting heavily, it gave up on attacking them and instead began charging relentlessly in the direction of the water, guided by sound.
Hu Yan saw its intent and yelled, "Don’t let it get back to the water!"
Yue Junxiao replied, "Don’t worry! It’s not getting past me!"
Because Lang Qiu was injured, Yue Junxiao was now wielding his Wolf Fang Club. He was incredibly fast, and he charged the Single-horned Rhinoceros, hammering it with several full-strength blows.
"ROAR—"
Pained by the blows, the Single-horned Rhinoceros tried to gore him a few times before resuming its forward charge.
It was still moving fast. Seeing that it wouldn’t stop, Yue Junxiao dashed ahead, knocked down a tree, and blocked its path.
Hu Yan latched his whip onto its horn again but was dragged for a considerable distance. Seeing this, Yan Yichen and Sang Mo rushed to help him pull.
With great difficulty, they finally brought the Single-horned Rhinoceros to a halt.
It suddenly shook its horn with immense force. The whip snapped taut, and all three of them were instantly flung through the air.
"CRASH—"
"CRACK—"
The three of them were slammed against nearby trees. Yan Yichen hit a smaller tree with enough force to snap it in two.
Sang Mo’s legs quickly transformed into a snake tail, which he wrapped around a tree to keep himself from falling.
As Hu Yan reeled in his whip, he immediately lashed it out again toward another tree, using it to swing over and brace himself at an angle against the trunk.
The Single-horned Rhinoceros seemed to realize it wouldn’t escape today. Its spiritual power erupted in an instant. "HOWL—"
Lang Qiu had been watching closely. Seeing it gather its spiritual power, he screamed, "Run!!"
Hu Yan and the others had only run a few meters when a series of explosions—BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!—erupted behind them.
All the surrounding trees were blasted apart.
Hu Yan and the others were all sent flying by the shockwave. Even Yan Yichen, who had been airborne, was blasted out of the sky.
"THUD—"
"THUD—"
"SPURT—"
The group crashed to the ground, each spitting out a mouthful of blood.
But the Single-horned Rhinoceros was in no better state. Having expended all of its spiritual power in that single burst, it was completely drained. Unable to support itself, it swayed and collapsed.
If the Single-horned Rhinoceros hadn’t realized it couldn’t escape, it never would have resorted to such a mutually destructive tactic.
Hu Yan and the others all carried various medicines. The moment they were injured by the blast, they took out healing potions from their storage spaces and downed them.
Then, they supported themselves as they got back to their feet.
The group gathered around the Single-horned Rhinoceros, watching it pant. Its hide was split open and its flesh exposed from the fire. They put it out of its misery with a single shot.
Then, with another shot to the head, they cracked open its skull and dug out the Beast Core from within.
The Single-horned Rhinoceros’s Beast Core was blue. Hu Yan placed it in his storage space.
Then he asked, "Who can clear out some room? We need to store the Single-horned Rhinoceros."
Yan Yichen wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. "I’ll do it."
He then took the items out of his storage space and put the Single-horned Rhinoceros inside. "I can’t believe there was an S-level Beast in Zone B. I wonder if that other group ran into one."
Yue Junxiao was still fuming from how that group had antagonized them upon their arrival. Hearing Yan Yichen mention them, he let out a cold sneer. "Aren’t they supposed to be so tough? Even if they did run into one, I’m sure they’d be fine."
The words had barely left his mouth when a deep rumbling sound echoed from the distance.
It was followed by a series of bestial roars.
Yan Yichen looked in the direction of the sound. "Don’t tell me they actually ran into one, did they?"
Lang Qiu clutched his wound, his expression grave. "If they also ran into an S-level Beast... then this whole expedition is in danger."
Zone B was only supposed to have low-level beasts, which was why it had been chosen for the collective hunt.
But if high-level beasts started appearing one after another, and if this was a sign of things to come, it would mean Zone B... was no longer a safe zone.
Taking it a step further, it might mean that Blue Star itself... was about to descend into chaos.
