Chapter 545: Chapter 353: Senseless Slaughter

Everyone has their youthful days, with a heart ablaze like fire.

But for many, even as the fire burns intensely, they have no idea where it will eventually lead.

...

The first impression of the frontier town is undoubtedly one of filth, disorder, and disrepair. The streets are littered with all sorts of trash covered in grime, flies swarming around them endlessly. Various residential buildings are in a state of disrepair, with ivy growing wildly over the structures, and a good deal of moss clinging to the surfaces of the walls, exuding a pervasive sense of decrepitude.

Yet, in one of those shabby buildings, there is a different world.

"Creak—"

The door was pushed open, and a young man covered in blood entered the room.

This room was clean and tidy, clearly maintained every day, with brand new furniture arranged throughout. Flowers bloomed proudly on the balcony, their fragrance carried by the breeze, exuding a sense of warmth utterly at odds with the frontier town.

"Gordon, you’re back," the woman of the house said, walking out from the kitchen wearing an apron.

Seeing Gordon covered in blood, she jumped back in shock and asked in panic, "Gordon! Are you hurt?!"

"No, it’s all someone else’s blood." Gordon took off his bloodstained clothes and threw them in the laundry basket, cursing the whole time, "Those bastards from the Gray Snake Gang dared to block me on the road."

"I’m fully outfitted with a Fearless Level 1 Artificial Body, and those scrubs dared to challenge me? I killed every last one of them, let’s see who dares to mess with me again!"

The woman asked worriedly, "They won’t follow you home, will they?"

Gordon calmly said, "Kallen, I’ve told you many times, I always make sure no one’s tailing me before I come home, and there are my brothers guarding this place 24/7. There won’t be any problems."

Kallen’s gaze turned somewhat wistful, as she said, "Gordon, every time you go out, it’s to fight someone, and you always come back covered in blood. I’m really worried about you like this..."

Gordon waved his hand, impatiently saying, "Stop nagging, this is men’s business, what would you women know? Just take care of things at home."

"I’m going to take a shower first. Is dinner ready? Hurry up and put it on the table, I’m starving."

Kallen softly said, "It’s ready, you go shower, I’ll sort out your clothes."

Once Gordon headed to the bathroom, Kallen quietly sorted the bloody clothes, machine-washing what needed it and hand-washing the rest, before hanging them on the balcony.

When Gordon finished his shower and came out, the hot dinner had already been set on the table.

As he sat down, a little girl came over to him.

She was Gordon and Kallen’s daughter, already 14 years old. In her hands, she held a plate of pasta topped with meat sauce, and she carefully placed it in front of Gordon, saying tenderly, "Daddy, eat the pasta."

"Mm, good girl." Gordon picked up a fork and began to devour the pasta.

Kallen brought over two smaller portions of pasta, placing them on the table, and said softly, "Agatha, come eat too."

The family of three sat at the table, eating their meal in silence, the atmosphere a bit heavy.

Gordon concentrated on filling his stomach, ravenous after a day of fighting.

Kallen and Agatha occasionally exchanged glances, seemingly having a silent conversation.

Kallen kept winking at Agatha, signaling her to speak to her father.

Agatha looked somewhat troubled, glancing back at Kallen, an unsure light in her eyes.

Originally, the two had agreed that Agatha would speak, but their daughter’s shyness made her retreat at the last moment. Kallen had no choice but to bring it up herself: "Gordon, there’s something I’d like to discuss with you."

"Talk," Gordon said without looking up.

Kallen spoke cautiously, her voice low: "How about we move to another city? We could go to the Capital City, or if you don’t like it there, we could choose another city."

Gordon frowned, pausing his meal, and looked up in confusion: "Why are you bringing this up all of a sudden?"

Karin lowered her eyes and said, "Neither I nor our daughter like the frontier. Ever since the Rust Wall Isolation Act was enacted three years ago, things have gotten more and more chaotic here, with gunshots echoing every single day."

"Every time you go out, you come back covered in blood, fighting this person today, another one tomorrow... We don’t like living like this."

Gordon laughed in disbelief, emphatically saying, "Kallen, you must be dreaming. Do you know what they call me out there now?"

"I, Gordon, am the King of the Borderlands! Over the past few years, I’ve toppled over a dozen large syndicates, and even the Anti-Violence Fourth Section’s Alpha Squad was wrecked by me alone! I’m the acknowledged king of the entire frontier!"

"After so much blood, sweat, and tears to climb to the top and become this king, you’re asking me to retire and move to another city? You must be joking!"

Kallen’s expression darkened, saying with a hint of perplexity, "I truly don’t understand why you’re so fixated on a hollow title? Is being the King of the Borderlands really that important to you?"

Gordon: "Yes! It’s very important! Because I don’t want to be looked down upon again!"

He forcefully jabbed at his chest, his tone filled with the bitterness and violence of past grievances, "You’ve been there through all the hardship we faced when we were young!"

"Remember when I was twenty? My dad passed away. At the time I didn’t have a cent, couldn’t even afford burial expenses."

"The coffin seller knew I was broke and deliberately made things difficult, saying if I barked like a dog ten thousand times, he’d give me a coffin for free."

"What choice did I have? To give my dad a decent burial, I did it! I stood outside his shop barking from dawn till dusk, literally like a dog, while everyone who passed by gave me looks as if I were trash! What could I do? With no money and no power, that was my only option!"
