Chapter 544: Chapter 352: Burning in Old Age (Part 2)
Due to the battlefield situation being too urgent, there weren’t extra personnel available for patrols, plus the mercenaries thought the enemy were beasts, so they believed no one would disrupt the battle, leaving the logistics area completely undefended.
At this moment, an old man had somehow stealthily blended into the logistics area. He had unplugged the power line of one of the single-soldier aircraft, activated it, and stepped on board.
"Hey! What are you doing? Don’t tamper with our equipment!" A mercenary wanted to rush over to stop him but it was already too late.
With a "boom," the engine of the single-soldier aircraft started, carrying the old man flying into the sky, going higher and higher.
The mercenary quickly opened the communicator to report: "There’s an unidentified person stealing a single-soldier aircraft in the logistics area, should we send someone to pursue?"
The voice on the other end of the communicator cursed: "Damn, there are people taking advantage of the situation... Forget it, it’s just a single-soldier aircraft, not worth much. We don’t have enough manpower, just let it be."
The mercenary could only hang up the communication, letting the old man ride the single-soldier aircraft into the distance.
Looking at the flight path of the old man, the mercenary suddenly felt something was off.
At first, he thought the man might be trying to take advantage of the war to grab some mercenary equipment to sell or to "cut in line" to escape into the Inner City earlier.
If that were the case, theoretically, he should be flying towards the east, in the direction of the Inner City.
But right now, the old man was flying in the opposite direction.
"Why is he flying towards the Edge..."
...
Gordon, riding the stolen single-soldier aircraft, returned to the district where Ping’an Clinic was located. The area was remote, with few residents around, not a major disaster zone after the calamity broke out, and only a few dozen beasts roaming nearby.
Switching the aircraft to low-noise mode, he carefully landed in the back alley without attracting any beast’s attention and returned to Ping’an Clinic through the back door.
The place hadn’t been damaged; everything remained as it was at the moment Gordon packed his luggage and left. The furniture was still intact.
Entering a complicated code into the concealed safe, a crack appeared on the wall, moving sideways to reveal a storage space.
Inside rested a precision-sealed box about the size of a human body, covered in dust accumulated over decades. The slightest breeze from a nearby body could stir up a layer of dust.
"Cough cough..." Gordon coughed covering his mouth and nose and opened the sealed box.
Inside was a complete set of artificial body parts, old models, but of remarkable grade, with every component being "Fearless Level 1" and the ensemble named "Slaughter."
In the chaotic era decades ago at the Edge, Gordon had relied on this Slaughter-type artificial body to conquer major forces, becoming the first king of this wicked land.
Gordon’s withered hands caressed the artificial components cloaked in dust, softly murmuring: "Hello again, old friend..."
He turned on the television in the room, with no need for tuning, as every program was broadcasting scenarios filmed by media drones in the Northern Border District.
The footage clearly showed only three people persevering in battle in the North District now: Fenrir, Nuobai, and Dongdong.
The beasts pouring out from the Tunneling Insect tunnel were endless; the three appeared as a lone boat amid stormy seas, rising and falling, on the brink of being engulfed at any moment.
Taking a deep breath, Gordon moved the artificial body components from the sealed box onto the mechanical table.
He input his body parameters into the system, activated the automatic mode, then laid down on the mechanical table.
The mechanical arm orderly rotated, removing the civilian artificial body Gordon had used for decades, then operated connecting tubes to enter his nerves, beginning to replace them with the Fearless Level 1 artificial body meant for slaughter.
The moment the first component was implanted, Gordon’s body began to tremble violently, with indescribable pain threatening to tear him apart.
The mechanical system’s warning sounded: "Warning, abnormal signs in the implant recipient, severe immune rejection reaction, implantation process automatically halted."
The artificial body had once been Gordon’s confidant, but now, over eighty years old, time had seized his exceptional gift, leaving only a feeble, aging body.
In the past, he could bear this Slaughter-type artificial body without burden, but now, even one component was enough to ravage his immune system.
Gordon struggled to turn his eyes towards the screen, seeing when Nuobai had fallen, overwhelmed by beasts too numerous, with the rescue team delayed.
Dongdong guarded by her side, fiercely battling the beasts, with electrical arcs from second-level overload flickering in her eyes, increasingly faint, clearly nearing the limit, about to collapse at any time.
Gordon’s lips quivered as he struggled to push out a sentence: "Inject immune solution until the body adapts."
The mechanical arm moved to retrieve a syringe, injecting a full 200cc of immune solution into Gordon’s body, easing his convulsion somewhat.
However, with the next component implanted, beads of sweat emerged on his forehead again, pain spreading inside as if every nerve were being sliced by sharp knives.
"Warning, abnormal signs in the implant recipient, severe immune rejection reaction, implantation process automatically halted."
"Inject immune solution until the body adapts."
Round after round of warnings, and immune solution injections, Gordon’s body oscillated between relief and agony, covered in needle marks from the injections, at least a dozen.
After a while, the mechanical arm halted once more, the chilling warning echoed: "Warning, excessive injection of immune solution, further injection will cause irreversible damage; due to system restrictions, I can no longer perform automatic injections for you."
On screen, Dongdong bore too much for Nuobai’s sake, facing the beasts directly, with wounds torn open by claws and fangs, her clothes stained crimson with blood.
Some broken beast limbs remaining unpulled, stabbing into her body, with wounds ripping further in combat, gradually depleting her vitality.
Her attack strength waned, sometimes needing several strikes to defeat a small beast, her gait faltered, everything indicating her body was nearing collapse.
At this point, Gordon had only implanted half the artificial body. Taking a deep breath, he staggered upright, his hands trembling, grabbing the immune solution injectors beside the mechanical table, manually injecting each one into his body.
Pain rampaged through his body like hundreds of steel needles pierced his flesh; his teeth clenched against pain, breathing each breath laden with agony, unintentionally releasing anguished roars from his throat.
"Ah!!!!!"
He roared at his aged self, fervently injecting the already excessive medication until the immune solution stock depleted, finally lying back on the mechanical table.
"Operation code 7327, release all system constraints, complete implantation of remaining components without pausing."
The mechanical arm smoothly executed, ignoring the unforgiving damage to the body on the table, continuously implanting remaining components into Gordon’s body.
His body was too worn, like a candle in the wind, slowly consuming itself in the surgery.
But before it extinguished entirely, he wished to cast one last glimmer.
Finally, all components of the artificial body finished implantation.
Gordon slowly opened his eyes, sensing the power of the artificial body, his physical form no longer youthful, yet the inner flame, after decades, ignited fiercely once more.
The old king stepped out from the haunt where he had lain dormant, walking toward his final battlefield.
