Chapter 543: Chapter 352: Burning in Old Age
In a place like the Border, violent conflicts happen frequently, sometimes they’re organized bloody battles, and other times it’s just fights sparked by arguments.
For those mingling on the streets, getting their heads busted and bleeding is a daily occurrence, either already injured or on the way to getting injured. In such times, knowing a reliable doctor becomes particularly important.
Ever since Gordon saved her, Dongdong became a regular at Ping’an Clinic.
"You’re here... Oh, what happened this time, all bruised and battered."
Gordon stood at the clinic door, looking helplessly at Dongdong.
The little girl was covered in lumps, her face was bruised and swollen everywhere, her lips were puffed up high, one eye was turned into a panda eye by someone; pathetic yet inexplicably humorous.
Dongdong swaggered in with hands on her hips, familiarly sat on the chair: "What else, got into a fight with someone, unless you think I fell by myself?"
Gordon fetched the medicine box, helping Dongdong with her wounds while sighing helplessly: "Here every few days, each time looking like this, then healed up and out fighting again..."
"I really don’t understand, where do you little munchkins find so many fights every single day?"
Dongdong was indignant, gesturing continuously in the air: "What do you doctors know? We, out here, it’s all about fighting for that breath!"
"Let me tell you, today I ran into a jerk who laughed at me for being short! I *on my Civilized Border*! I hate it when people call me short, I went up and punched him! "
Gordon joked: "But he was telling the truth, you aren’t that tall either."
"You!" Dongdong’s eyes widened, glaring at Gordon for a while unable to retort, finally just huffed and said, "Old man, if you hadn’t saved me before, I’d have already slapped you!"
Gordon laughed heartily, gently patting Dongdong’s back of the head, showing no malice, then solemnly said: "I just feel, not everything has to be resolved by fighting."
"Take this time for example; because of a trivial matter, you fought with someone, you hurt, he hurt, except for venting your anger, what else did you gain? Nothing."
"Such fights are meaningless, purely a waste of time and a squander of life. When, in future, you look back, you’ll find you’ve buried the best of your youth."
Dongdong raised her little head defiantly: "I don’t care, whoever provokes me, I’ll hit them, bring them on! Someday, I’ll climb to the top, make them stop looking down on me!"
Gordon smiled wryly, his eyes showing complex emotions for some reason, he said quietly: "Then let me ask you, if one day you really climb to the very top, no one’s looking down on you anymore, what do you intend to do?"
Dongdong was taken aback by the question; perhaps, struggling for her livelihood, she’s never considered this question, the saying about making a mark in the world being nothing more than something she touted, yet never deeply thought about. She fell into deep contemplation.
Gordon did not urge, just quietly continued bandaging her, letting her think in peace.
Not sure how long had passed, the confusion in Dongdong’s eyes turned into clarity, she said earnestly: "At that time, I want to change this world."
Upon hearing, Gordon’s hand stopped, momentarily stunned: "...Why do you have such a thought?"
Dongdong retracted her legs, propped her elbows on her knees, holding her small face thoughtfully, said: "Old man, haven’t you noticed, this world is strange."
"We’re all humans, yet some can live like gods, while others live worse than dogs... What exactly is this disparity about?"
"This reason, I think from the bottom it’s unclear, one has to climb up. If one day I really climb to the top, and see that reason, I want to make a change."
Gordon was silent for a long time before continuing bandaging Dongdong, his hands, for some reason, slightly trembling, just like his voice: "Child, saying something like this sounds simple, yet it’s quite hard."
"Because on the way upwards, one encounters all sorts of confusion and temptation, they obscure your vision, making it hard to see where you are heading. Are you sure that once you reach the top, you won’t forget your original intention?"
Dongdong laughed lightly, leisurely said: "Who can be sure about the future, right now even eating is uncertain."
"I just think, my whole life I’ve been drenched, if there’s a chance, I’d like to hold an umbrella for someone else."
Gordon’s mind seemed to be struck by something, an indescribable sadness filled his heart, misty tears blurred his vision unknowingly.
"Good child..." he said.
Upon hearing "child", Dongdong asked curiously: "Hey, old man, every time I come here, you’re all on your own. You’re already of age, yet you don’t have any wife or kids?"
Gordon discreetly wiped away the tears from the corner of his eyes, gently so Dongdong wouldn’t notice, his lips curled into a bitter curve, softly said two words.
"I once did."
...
At the Eastern Border District battlefront, Mercenaries were still holding the lines fighting fierce beasts, awaiting the endless refugees to evacuate into the Inner City, the conflict was very tense.
In the logistics area behind a defense line, support personnel were refueling a batch of individual flying equipment.
Suddenly, a nearby Mercenary noticed something, pointing to a corner and shouted: "Hey hey hey, what are you doing?!"
