Chapter 530: Chapter 529: Closure
"Mom..." Keith muttered as his steps slowed down.
"Please..." the voice came once more as Keith tried to get through the crowd, but he was nothing but a kid.
How could he shove these adults away?
Keith struggled, but to no avail. Luckily for him, there was a hole in the crowd large enough for him to see what was going on.
At the front of the crowd was the town head and more than a dozen men, each armed with a thick wooden stick.
They stood behind the town head, while opposite them were Keith’s parents.
His father held his mother in his arms as Keith’s mother’s face was filled with tears.
"You witch! How long have you been causing chaos in our town?" the town head said with a furious expression as the crowd shouted in agreement.
They all looked at Keith’s mother and father with anger.
Raising his hand, the crowd quieted down.
"It all ends now," the town head spoke slowly before turning to Keith’s father.
"You are the only one who would stay with this witch. You have done enough, but for your child, I will spare you."
The moment the town head said this, protests erupted as the people disagreed.
"Silence!" the town head shouted, and their voices instantly lowered.
"You all worked with him. You have seen what he has done. At one point, he even helped some of you," the town head spoke as he looked at everyone coldly, causing their protests to die down.
With his hands behind his back, the town head continued,
"Take your kid and leave our town. This is our last act of mercy."
Keith’s father clenched his fists before slowly raising his head.
"What will happen to my wife?" he asked.
"She?" the town head began.
"This witch will be beaten to death and burned."
The town head pointed at her angrily, his body trembling.
Hearing this, Keith’s father gritted his teeth as he held his weeping wife closer.
"I will protect her," he said.
The town head’s expression changed to shock.
The same happened to the town residents.
"Are you crazy? You want to die for this witch?" the town head asked.
"He must be under her spell."
"He is gone."
"It is too late. He can’t be saved," the crowd murmured as the town head gritted his teeth.
"Beat them to death. Both of them," the town head ordered furiously.
"Yes!"
The dozen men replied as they raised their sticks.
Seeing this, Keith’s father shielded his wife with his body.
Thunk!
A dull, heavy sound rang out as a stick struck Keith’s father’s back, but he didn’t let out a scream. He endured it.
Whack!
Whack!
Whack!
One after another, the heavy sticks slammed into Keith’s father’s body as blood soon began to flow.
The crowd went mad as they roared in enjoyment while watching them suffer.
Keith’s mother’s hands trembled as she tried to push her husband away.
How could she allow him to suffer because of her mistake?
"No..." she struggled to say as she tried to push him away.
Bang!
Whack!
But no matter how much she struggled, she couldn’t push him off.
Then she paused as she looked at her husband’s face.
He was smiling at her, even as blood flowed from his head.
"It will be okay," her husband whispered.
Then...
He collapsed to the ground.
She reached forward, but then—
Thunk!
Thunk!
Thunk!
Three heavy blows landed on her body as she felt the world spin.
Keith stood frozen as he watched his two parents being beaten until blood poured from their bodies.
Even after that, they never stopped.
It was as though each strike grew heavier and more brutal than the last.
Then he saw his father lose consciousness.
Something inside Keith broke.
Yet even as his father lay unconscious on the ground, they continued beating him.
His mother was struck as well, but despite everything, even with her legs broken, she still crawled toward her husband’s side as the two were beaten one after another.
This continued for ten more minutes before the town head finally ordered them to stop.
"Burn them," the town head said coldly as the crowd piled hay around Keith’s parents’ bodies.
Keith watched as the torch slowly descended and touched the hay.
A massive flame erupted as time seemed to slow down for him.
Everything in his vision became nothing but the fire.
One by one, the people left until only two remained.
Keith slowly walked toward his parents’ burning bodies.
Ignoring the heat, he collapsed to his knees and screamed.
"AHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Tears streamed down his face as the boy cried.
Behind him stood the only remaining person.
Father Yen lowered his gaze as he looked at the devastated child.
"I’m sorry, young one," Father Yen muttered as tears rolled down his face while watching Keith break down.
Keith had never felt an emotion like this before.
This feeling was something he couldn’t explain, yet it caused him immense pain.
It felt as though his heart was being torn apart.
He couldn’t understand it.
He couldn’t comprehend it.
But...
Keith reached his hand into the fire.
"Ah!"
He jerked it back as immense pain shot through it.
But Keith, still crying, moved closer to the fire.
"Mom... Dad..."
"Mom... Dad..."
"Mom..."
Keith reached into the fire once more.
Ignoring the burns he had already suffered, this time he didn’t pull his hand back.
"Kid!"
Seeing this, Father Yen hurried over, grabbed Keith, and dragged him away.
"Kid, do you want to die?" Father Yen shouted angrily.
But as he heard the child’s sobs and saw the look on his face, all of his anger vanished.
He simply hugged the boy.
"It’s okay. Everything will be fine. Come, let’s treat your arm," Father Yen said as he looked at the blisters on the kid’s left hand and the burnt skin.
As the two headed back to his shop...
Within the flames, two crimson-red eyes lit up and watched their figures disappear from sight.
---
At Father Yen’s shop, he carried the kid, who at one point seemed to have lost consciousness, inside.
Placing him gently on a table, Father Yen hurriedly searched for herbs as he mixed them together.
"You have been through a rough time, kid. But I promised your parents."
"You can’t die."
"As long as I am alive, I will protect you. No one will hurt you," Father Yen thought as he mashed the herbs together before bringing them over to Keith and applying them to his burnt arm.
