Chapter 529: Chapter 528: Witch Son

The morning came shortly as Keith yawned. His little body was energized for the day as he rushed out of his room.

"Mom, Dad," Keith called out as he met his two parents discussing while preparing the meal.

For a moment, Keith paused as he gazed at them. This was something he didn’t understand, but he loved it and held it dear. Mom and Dad seemed so close and were like siblings in the way they played and did things.

Keith couldn’t imagine what he would do without them.

"Hey, my dear." Hearing the thunderous voice, his mother turned around, slapping Keith’s father’s mischievous hand away as she smiled at Keith and opened her arms. Keith hugged her.

The two hugged as Keith’s father smiled, carrying Keith on his shoulders. Then he wrapped his arms around Keith’s mother’s waist as the family of three laughed and sang while they made food.

A tantalizing aroma filled the air, and Keith’s and his father’s stomachs growled in protest, making Keith’s mother laugh.

For Keith, everything was going great today. Father was here instead of hunting, and Mother had also taken a break from her work. Today would be the best day ever.

But he couldn’t understand what happened. His two parents, who had been full of smiles just minutes ago, now had a cold presence around them as they ate in silence.

Keith was so scared he could barely make a sound as he buried his head in the food.

It was delicious, but his heart was anything but calm.

"Keith..." His father’s voice came, deep and raspy, as Keith felt his heartbeat skip a beat.

"Ye... yes," Keith struggled to reply.

"I need you to go to Father Yen and collect some herbs for me," his father said as Keith’s body trembled before he stood up.

"Yes... Father," Keith spoke, confused. His parents were never like this, so what the hell happened?

He couldn’t help but glance at his mother, but she didn’t look at him.

Keith lowered his head as he rushed outside, just in time to miss the tears that fell from his mother’s eyes.

"Wait."

Just as Keith opened the door, he heard his father’s voice and stopped in his tracks.

His heartbeat raced as he heard the footsteps inching closer, but then he saw his father smile as he crouched.

"Your mother... she might be pregnant, so tell Father Yen to give us good herbs. Or don’t you want your junior sister or brother to be strong?" his father asked with a smile as a huge smile blossomed on Keith’s face and his worries vanished.

"Really?" Keith asked excitedly.

"Shhh." Looking back anxiously, Keith’s father smiled.

"Okay, go on now," his father said as Keith couldn’t stop smiling.

"Yes, Father. You can count on me," Keith said as he ran out of the house.

His father stood at the door, watching the boy’s back disappear. The instant it did, his expression changed as he clenched his fist.

---

In the town, Keith spread his arms like a bird’s wings as he moved from one side to another while heading to Father Yen’s shop at the center of the town.

Getting to the market, he met a lot of people moving about as they shopped for goods.

"Hi, Kale," Seeing a familiar figure, Keith said as he waved at his best friend.

Only for her to ignore him.

Keith paused before shouting,

"Hi, Kale... it’s me!" Keith shouted.

This time, Kale actually looked at him before turning away and continuing on her way as Keith slowed down.

What was happening?

His mood instantly changed.

But then he thought maybe she was just angry. Remembering what his father said, Keith smiled as he continued on his way.

This time, he saw another friend.

"Hey... Jacob, how are you?" Keith greeted, and this time Jacob looked at him.

"Go away... witch’s son," Jacob spoke before running away, leaving Keith confused.

What is a witch, and why did he call him a witch’s son?

"Wait... isn’t that him?"

"The witch’s son..."

"Careful, he might also be a small witch."

Just then, Keith heard murmurs around him as the adults’ whispers reached his ears, leaving him confused.

Before Keith knew it, he was surrounded as, one by one, they pointed their fingers at him and whispered. The more they whispered, the more their expressions toward him turned into disgust.

Keith didn’t know when the tears began falling from his eyes as he started crying.

"What is wrong with you?"

Just then, a loud, commanding voice rang out as an elderly man, missing a leg and using a wooden one in its place, stepped forward.

His white beard was long and sparse, and his head was full of white hair.

His expression was a deep frown as his body trembled.

"Are you forgetting he’s a kid? How far will you go?" he pressed as Keith turned back.

"Father Yen," Keith cried out as he rushed to the old man and hugged him.

The instant he did, those nearby couldn’t help but move back from Father Yen.

"You..." Father Yen’s beard trembled as anger overwhelmed him, but he knew he couldn’t change these people’s minds. So, taking Keith with him, he left, heading back to his shop as the adults all lowered their heads in shame.

After all, Father Yen was a well-respected person in this town. Even the town head bowed to him.

What they did was like disrespecting the town head.

Keith entered the shop with Father Yen and was hit by the intense scent of herbs, but this time around, Keith didn’t seem to mind as he cried his eyes out.

"Kid, it’s okay." Father Yen patted Keith’s back as Keith’s cries came out in broken sobs.

"But... but... they called me names," Keith said.

"It’s okay. They are just irresponsible bullies. Everything will be fine," Father Yen said with a smile.

But despite everything Father Yen did, Keith couldn’t stop crying. Just then...

"But... Mom and Dad... they are angry at me," Keith said as Father Yen furrowed his brows.

It was no unknown fact to the people of this town how much Keith’s father and mother loved him.

This was impossible.

"Tell me what happened," Father Yen asked as he took his seat. After all, it was strange.

"Th... this morning... Mom... and... Dad were quiet... and the way they looked..."

"They don’t want me... Did I do something?" Keith asked as his vision blurred with tears.

Father Yen stood up instantly, shocking Keith so much that he forgot to cry.

"Is it time?" Father Yen muttered as his expression changed in horror.

"Father Yen?"

Just then, Keith called out as Father Yen was snapped out of his thoughts.

"What happened... to Mom... and Dad?" Keith asked as Father Yen felt his stomach twist. He couldn’t help but look at Keith with pity.

"Keith, listen. Everyth—"

"Mom!"

Keith instantly stood up and ran outside, calling out as he rushed toward his house.

At this moment, the once-rowdy market had gone quiet as he heard distant murmurs.

"Mom... Dad!" Keith shouted as he rushed forward.

A few moments later, Keith saw a huge crowd gathered around the town entrance as murmurs spread through the air.

"Please... I didn’t kill them!"

A familiar voice mixed with cries rang out as Keith’s pupils dilated.

"Mom..." Keith muttered.
