Chapter 496: Chapter 489: Cherie Is Back
His last words made Clara Grant’s heart flutter, and though her eyes were shy, she raised an eyebrow to ask, "Me? Am I any different from other women?"
"Of course you’re different. In all my twenty-eight years, you’re the only woman who’s ever made me react on sight." As Seth Quinn spoke, his expression turned hazy and suggestive.
Clara Grant had known him for so long and had seen that expression countless times. She knew exactly what he was thinking.
If it weren’t for his injuries, he probably would have turned into a wolf and pounced on her by now.
Clara Grant’s face flushed. Part of her was shy, but she was also worried that if he got too worked up, it would be painful for him to hold back. Not daring to pursue the topic, she hastily changed the subject. "Tell me, is there anything else you’re hiding from me? If so, just tell me everything today."
Seth Quinn quickly promised, "Nothing. There’s absolutely nothing else. If there is, even if you don’t blame me for it, I’ll punish myself."
Clara Grant stared at him for a long moment. He looked so sincere that she finally nodded. "Okay, I believe you. But you also have to promise me you’ll never lie to me again. Not about anything."
"I promise. I’ll never lie to you again, no matter what!" Seth Quinn’s expression was dead serious.
"Fine. In that case, I won’t hold this against you. We’ll wipe the slate clean. It all depends on your behavior from now on." Clara Grant wrinkled her nose, looking mischievous. "If it weren’t for your injury, I wouldn’t have forgiven you this easily!"
"So you see, it was a blessing in disguise. I’m actually glad I took this bullet. Who knows how long it would’ve taken me to get back in your good graces otherwise." As he spoke, Seth Quinn tightened his grip on her hand, a small smile playing on his lips. "Since you’re being so good and letting me off the hook... here, you get a reward."
Clara Grant didn’t understand what he meant by "a reward" at first. She only realized it when she saw him point to his lips.
A playful glint appeared in her eyes. She leaned in, slowly bringing her lips toward his. But just as Seth Quinn closed his eyes to savor the kiss, she abruptly stood up, pulled her hand from his grasp, and let out a little laugh. "I’m going to go boil some water," she said, then turned and walked off.
Seth Quinn watched her retreating figure and gave a wry smile, his eyes filled to the brim with warmth and adoration.
...
Early the next morning, Mrs. Cheney arrived again with fresh soup and other dishes. Clara Grant fed Seth Quinn and had a little to eat herself. She was just gathering the empty containers for Mrs. Cheney to take back when someone knocked on the door.
Clara Grant frowned and glanced at Seth Quinn before calling out to the door, "Come in."
The words had barely left her mouth when the door swung open. Before she could even see who it was, a small figure dashed toward her like a gust of wind and leaped into her arms.
Clara Grant instinctively threw her arms around the small body to steady herself.
Although she hadn’t seen the little one’s face, the moment she felt the soft, small body in her arms, she knew who it was.
"Cherie, I thought you went back to the U.S.A.! How did you get back? When did you arrive? Where’s your mom?" Clara Grant’s face was alight with excitement as she hugged Cherie and crouched down, asking one question after another.
Cherie buried his small face in the crook of her neck and said in a muffled voice, "Clara, I missed you so much."
"I missed you too! I missed you like crazy!" Clara Grant gently pulled him back from her shoulder to look at his little face, feeling as if she were in a dream.
Watching the affectionate reunion between the two, Seth Quinn, still in bed, coughed loudly twice, even at the risk of aggravating his wound.
