Chapter 495: Chapter 488: What’s More, the One I Married Is You
Seeing there was nothing wrong with the wound, Clara Grant breathed a sigh of relief. She sat back down in her chair and said in a huff, "The wound is fine. You’re a grown man, and you’re this scared of pain!"
"Who says I’m a grown man? In front of you, I’m just a little boy, and little boys are scared of pain. Clara, it really, really hurts." Seth Quinn frowned, and to anyone watching, it wouldn’t have looked like he was lying.
"Then... then what should I do?" Clara Grant was getting flustered, regretting that she hadn’t been able to stop herself from hitting him. If she’d known it would aggravate his wound, she never would have done it.
"How about I go get a doctor to come take a look at you?" Clara Grant said, starting to stand up to find one, but Seth Quinn’s voice stopped her just in time.
"You don’t need to get a doctor. If you just blow on it for me, it’ll stop hurting."
...
Clara Grant was speechless. She looked at him, torn between laughter and exasperation, and teased, "Excuse me, Mr. Quinn, are you two or three years old? You want me to ’blow on it’!"
Despite her words, she still lifted his shirt and played along with this "Three-Year-Old Quinn," blowing gently on his wound.
’Clara Grant was starting to think Seth Quinn must have injured his brain, causing his IQ to drop. And her own IQ was being dragged down by him, turning her into a three-year-old right along with him.’
’Otherwise, why would she actually be going along with such a childish act?!’
After blowing on it for a moment, she even remembered to ask, "How is it? Does it still hurt?"
Seth Quinn nodded contentedly. "Mmm, much better."
In truth, with the thick gauze covering the wound, there was no way he could feel the faint puff of air she was blowing. He just wanted to distract her and quell her anger.
Seth Quinn lay there comfortably, turning his head to watch as she carefully smoothed his shirt back down.
He could tell her worry for him outweighed her anger, which put him at ease. Still, he apologized. "Clara, I broke my promise to you to keep this a secret. It was my fault, so please don’t be angry. I was just trying to prevent you from divorcing me. I figured if our parents knew and were involved, it wouldn’t be so easy for you to leave me, even if you wanted to."
"Our parents?" Clara Grant immediately seized on the key phrase. "You mean my mom knew all along?"
"Ah, yes, Mom knew too," Seth Quinn admitted. "The afternoon we got our marriage license, I went to see her..."
...Hah. After a long moment of shock, Clara Grant let out a cryptic laugh.
’She remembered that day. When she came home that evening, her mother had even asked her if she should consider Seth Quinn. Her mom had known about the marriage even then, yet she’d put on such a convincing act!’
’It was bad enough that Seth Quinn’s parents helped him deceive her, but she never expected her own mother to help an outsider trick her!’
’Ugh, although Seth Quinn wasn’t exactly an outsider anymore, back then he was about as much of a stranger as you could get, wasn’t he? Besides, her mother had barely met him. She had no idea how he’d managed to convince her to conspire with him against her own daughter!’
Confused, Clara Grant voiced her question.
Seth Quinn raised an eyebrow and smiled. "With my sincerity, of course. I told Mom I would treat you well for the rest of my life. She probably thought I was both exceptional and earnest, so she was quite supportive of us being together from the start."
Clara Grant gave him a skeptical look. "And back then, you dared to promise you’d treat me well for a lifetime?"
"Of course I could. Because in my mind, once I marry a woman, I will treat her well, regardless of whether I have feelings for her or not," Seth Quinn said, slowly reaching out to grasp her hand, which was resting by the bed. "Especially since the woman I married was you!"
