Chapter 296: Real Self
Aegon knew the demons were targeting the Valerians for some reason. His grandma was supposed to be the last one, but his presence ruined everything the demons had planned.
Now, he was the last Valerian, so there was no way they wouldn’t target him. Except he had always been in a tightly secured environment, so the demons couldn’t do anything.
But Aegon didn’t want to live inside all his life just because there was a threat outside. It would just be his first life all over again, but that also didn’t mean he didn’t take the threat seriously.
That was why he was thankful to have the Red Veil under him. With them around, any ambushes would fail. If the worst came, he was prepared for that.
That was why the first thing he did upon entering the Chainbound Sky was to send his shadows to scout the area and make sure it was safe.
After all, he also had to care about Elara’s security.
Her status gave her just as many enemies as him, especially if she was in human territory. He also kept Hecte with him since she was the strongest among the Red Veil.
After seeing such a display of force, Aegon noticed a look of surprise and delight forming on Kaelis’s face. It confused him, as normally any leader would dislike having such force inside his home.
’Is something wrong here?’ Aegon wondered, as he contacted the other shadows and asked about it. But all of them said that everything was fine and normal here.
’Weird.’
Elara gripped his hand a little tightly and, upon getting his attention, she nodded slightly.
"My lord," Kaelis said after some hesitation. "If you don’t mind, can you please come to my residence when you’re leaving? I have something important to talk about. It’s a request of mine, so please don’t refuse."
’Yup, I was right,’ Aegon smiled and said, "Sure. It’s not a big deal, and I’m imposing on you."
"I’m very grateful for it," Kaelis bowed. "I won’t disturb you any longer. Have a good day. And if there are any problems, please contact me."
"I’ll do it," Aegon nodded and turned around to ask Elara, "Are you ready to enjoy the date?"
"I’m already enjoying it," Elara chuckled.
With that, the two of them went towards the island’s edge while Kaelis stood still, looking at their fading silhouettes. His eyes shone with hope and excitement.
"Admin, are they who I’m thinking of?" Orien asked as the others came closer too.
"Yes. He is Aegon Valeria Augustus, the Young Master of House Augustus and the heir to House Valeria, the Last Dragon Master," Kaelis nodded, still finding everything unbelievable. "And she is Elara Sylvaris, the Princess of Elves, the Pupil of the World Tree, the Emerald Regent, the Stormwind Archer, and the Luminous Heir of the Silver Moon."
Orien gasped, and the others had similar reactions. He suddenly thought of something and asked, "My friend, are you thinking of that?"
"This is our only option," Kaelis’s face hardened as he said. "They seem like kind and reasonable people, so I will try my best. Even if I have to give up everything, I’ll save this nation."
He turned towards him and said, his voice cold and authoritative, "Call the Aerial Council. It’s an emergency meeting. Anyone who doesn’t come can forget about their seats in the council."
Orien sensed the seriousness of the matter and nodded. "Let’s meet in an hour. The fate of Chainbound Sky will depend on this."
Meanwhile, Aegon and Elara were walking hand in hand, enjoying the cold winds as they rustled the grass beneath them. Elara didn’t know what they were going to do, but she didn’t care either. She let him lead.
"What do you think about the Administrator?" Aegon asked. "I’ve already sent my shadows, but they didn’t find anything yet."
"I’m guessing he’s facing a major threat. His appearance clearly told his story. He likely hadn’t slept for days," Elara replied calmly. "He will ask for our help later. For what? I don’t know that."
"Probably related to the Chainbound Sky itself," Aegon said. "If it was something personal, he wouldn’t ask it before everyone. My gut feeling also says otherwise."
"Well, we’ll find out later. So let’s focus on ourselves," Elara smiled at him and asked, "So, my dear boyfriend, would you please tell me why you made everything so grand?"
"Whatever do you mean?"
"Don’t pretend," Elara lightly hit him on his shoulder and said. "You know what I mean."
"Well, I just wanted you to know that even with our identities, we can live together like a couple. And there’s nothing to hide," Aegon said, his voice turning soft.
"Every time we do stuff like going out, we have to change our appearance and then enjoy. It’s fun and good for escapism, but in the end, this is our identity. You are the Elf Princess, and it’s not changing ever. And I love all versions of you, so why not have a date with your real self?"
Elara froze for a moment, her eyes widening before she hurriedly composed herself.
Aegon continued.
"I wanted you to enjoy our date as your real self, not the escapism one. You are my love, Elara, and you deserve the best in every form. So today is all for the Elf Princess, Elara Sylvaris."
Elara’s eyes turned wet as she wiped them clean and said, "Don’t say things like that, idiot. I spent so much effort on my makeup. Don’t ruin it."
"Hey! How am I ruining it?" Aegon felt wronged.
Elara hugged his arm, taking him by surprise, as she said, "If I didn’t know you so well, I would have thought you’re a playboy. So smooth with girls. Are you sure I’m your first girlfriend?"
"Don’t accuse me of nonsense," Aegon rolled his eyes. "I always planned to date and marry only one person. Not my fault you secured your position so easily."
"As if it was that easy," Elara snorted and said. "I also worked hard, you know."
"Yes, yes, my little elf princess works the hardest."
"You’re making fun of me."
"I’m not."
"Hmph! I’ll feed honey to you. Just you wait."
"The hell! Why are you angry?"
"I’m not."
