Chapter 297: A Yandere?

Aegon had studied the Chainbound Sky before choosing it for his date. Because of his perfect memory, he remembered every tiny detail related to it. So he had already made some plans.

As they reached the edge, Aegon looked at the giant metal chain that connected Skyreach to the distant floating island at a lower altitude.

There were a few methods to travel between the islands. The most famous and commonly used was the chains. They were big enough to let even ten people walk on them simultaneously. But it was very risky, as falling from the chains meant certain death.

Skyreach was located ten kilometres above the ground, after all. While other floating islands were below this one, they were still high enough to kill even mid-rank knights.

To solve this problem, the Vayrins had installed a long rope system running parallel to the chains. One could attach a harness to those ropes so that even if they fell, the ropes would save them.

The other options for travelling were cabins used in pulley systems. Manual workers had to handle them, so it required huge manpower and also carried the risk of falling.

All in all, the Chainbound Sky was a beautiful place to travel but also very dangerous.

"I was thinking maybe we can race," Aegon said, but then he glanced at Elara’s gown. "Let’s skip it though."

"I can still do it," Elara chuckled. "I’ve been trained to fight in worse situations, so I can move around in my gown as easily as I would without it."

"No, I’m still skipping it," Aegon shook his head. "Let’s walk on it without the harness. It’ll be fun."

"What if we fall down?" Elara asked.

"As if we don’t have means to save ourselves," Aegon rolled his eyes. "Anyways, let’s see the view from above again."

They held each other’s hands and stepped onto the metal chain, finding it hard and cold. The winds picked up as they travelled further down, threatening to throw them off balance and into the vast sky below.

But both of them were experienced fighters, so balance was something they had learned long ago. The winds barely affected them.

At one point, even the clouds began to move through them, obscuring their vision. They could only see the chain, but that didn’t reduce their pace.

"Never thought I’ll touch clouds," Elara said, running her hands through the wet air. "Ah! I wish we could capture this moment forever. Maybe I should have learned painting."

"I’m actually working on that," Aegon said, also enjoying the scenery. "The Mana Batteries were the base for it. It’ll be called a Camera, and we could capture the moment in an instant."

"Hmm, we’ll have to revisit this place then," Elara chuckled. "Maybe after our marriage, we can come here again."

"Oh my, are you already thinking of marriage?" Aegon gasped in surprise. "Who told you I’m marrying you?"

Instantly, the grip on his hand tightened enough that he felt like his bones were grinding together. "Ouch! Ouch! You’re killing your husband!"

Elara released his hand, kissed it, and smiled. "Then, my dear husband, don’t even joke about it. You’re mine. That’s your only choice now."

Her beautiful blonde hair fluttered in the wind as her smile widened and a glint passed through her eyes. "If you do, then please know that first I’ll kill the other girl you find, then you, and finally myself."

Aegon blinked, too stunned by the transformation in her. Did she really just say all that? Since when did she have such a side to her?

Just as he was wondering that, Elara’s mood changed again as she began laughing. "You talked about this obsessive love. What was it called? Being a yandere or something?"

"You..." Aegon couldn’t believe it for a second, then he sighed. "Yes, it’s called yandere. Why are you even joking about that?"

"Who said I’m joking?" Elara winked at him. "Or maybe I am. That’s for you to figure out."

Saying that, she laughed cheerfully and then ran down the chain, leaving a bewildered Aegon behind. Her gown seemed to flow with the wind as the clouds surrounded her, creating a mesmerizing view.

He wondered if she was joking or not. It was hard to tell. But then he smiled. ’It doesn’t matter. Both versions of her are alluring.’

Granted, he was only seeing this version after he started dating her. But that was how human relationships worked. You would think you knew the other person well, and then something would come up that would shock you.

It especially happened with couples. He had read about it.

Shaking his head, he looked around. He stood on the curve of a chain’s link, leaning slightly to balance himself against the cold winds. He was quite sure normal people would find it extremely cold here, but he had resistance to cold and heat.

Below the chains, clouds slid past in long white sheets. Occasionally, they parted enough to let him see the other side, a bottomless pitch-black abyss. That was the underside of the Chainbound Sky, one which was unexplored even until now.

No one dared to enter the depths of this abyss.

This time, Aegon didn’t let his gaze linger there for long because he knew he would just get curious about it and begin having thoughts. He focused on the other floating islands instead, which were connected to each other by a complex network of metal chains.

At the centre of this chain network was Skyreach, the highest and centermost island.

On the sides of the Chainbound Sky, ten kilometres down, the world was like a painting. Forests and plains appeared as green shapes on a canvas, with small lines representing rivers and dots for settlements.

’What a view,’ he thought, raising his head to look at the sky covered in drifting clouds. It was more blue than he was familiar with.

Up here, everything was very quiet, and very small, and he liked it that way.

He inhaled deeply and rushed down the chain. At the base, he found Elara waiting for him. He smiled.

It was time for him to forget everything and simply enjoy the date.
