Chapter 153: Gate Monsters

Arthur arranged the gifts with his moderator perks and advised Faust on what to do. It was nice having someone to offload the thinking process, allowing him to focus on planning his battle.

He pulled out Scrolls of Protection, handing them to Nirvana. She would divert the skeletons to protect the citizens using them in case anything happened.

Then he pulled out the Essence extracts and began to take them quickly. He exchanged some of his Spirit extracts for Constitution extracts with Nirvana, then gave her some extra Agility extracts for free.

Nirvana stammered, "No, I can’t..."

"Don’t worry about it, I’m already so quick," Faust reassured. "I’ll need you to keep yourself safe while I focus."

Faust faced the glowing Gate. It let out a booming wail, like the waking of a beast. And the air rippled outward in a boom that fluttered his white cloak and red hair.

"Here they come."

Beasts fell from the Gate, landing in the sand with dull thuds. More and more of them dropped with an eerie silence.

A low growl escaped the monsters.

The Horned Bears with demonic red eyes turned up towards Faust, his figure glowing in the light of the Gate like a beacon of war.

"Come on then." Faust grinned. "Let’s see what you got."

All the beasts roared and it was as though the night itself was screaming. The civilians backed up with horror bright in their eyes. Then came the charging thumps of the beasts, shaking everything like a landslide.

Each bear was the size of a bus and packed with more muscle. They covered the ground in seconds, deceptively fast for their size.

In terms of Combat Power, Faust was above them one on one, but he was sure most of their power was Strength and Constitution.

And there are like a hundred of them.

So he had to output more damage than them and avoid their attacks.

Nirvana exchanged a look with him and he moved instantly, disappearing in a blur of acceleration.

She knew not to directly contest the beasts, but she could hold her own even if their combat power was above hers.

He landed on the sandy beach and gathered his mana with a breath.

’Heavy Fireball.’

He could feel the mana inside him moving into the spell framework hanging over his palm. The mana of the Gate interrupted it and subtly made it harder to attack.

But now that he could sense this, he cast the spell faster, lifting a growing ball of flame and force over his head.

The wind howled from the weight of the spell, ripping through the city like a coming storm. The sand under him turned red hot as the fire intensified. People could see the fireball from across town, and they wondered what the world had gone to.

The bears slowed down and tried to split up as the orange flame illuminated them, but he was already done casting and released it.

BOOOOOM!

It landed in their middle and knocked everything off its feet. The ground shook as the explosion spread upward.

The stream went crazy.

[Durandal: He’s like a human stealth bomber.]

[Toeglazer: I’ve seen fireballs get cast before, that extra weight and force is abnormal!]

[2ndImpact: He didn’t even hit them all but the force blasted them away.]

The skeletons and summons charged in as the fire spread, unfearing.

The Scourger flew ahead, releasing its blood like acid on the fallen bears and laughing hideously.

The Wind Elemental surged around the Red wolf and the Silver Archer on its back, increasing their speed dramatically.

Arrows sunk into the flesh of the stunned bears; anything that tried getting up was blown over by the emerald wind.

The Skeletons and ghosts worked together to slash vital points of the bears till they died of blood loss, but they paid by getting ripped apart like clay.

The summons got him extra kills and exp.

Nirvana would get more exp too. Her ghosts had more bite to their attacks, but were just as fragile as the skeletons in front of the overwhelming claws of the bears.

That’s where Nirvana’s new skill came in.

A pillar of black fire surged from her hands, landing in the midst of a group of bears fighting some of the undead. Instead of burning her skeletons and ghosts, it coated them and protected them against attacks.

Meanwhile, the bears were soaked in the black flames which stole their vitality and burnt them quickly.

The skill fusion was a devastating Swiss Army knife, capable of terrifying destruction while defending her minions.

The bears charged past the smaller enemies, since they didn’t deal as much damage as their masters. Killing the squishy casters was always a valid monster tactic.

Except when the caster was Faust.

He shot forward to meet their charge, rearing his axe back for a powerful swing that took off the head of one of the bears completely.

Wind surged from his blow like the axe was swung by a giant. But that wasn’t all.

A golden serpent was born from the attack, swimming around Faust before he ordered it to attack a bear coming from his left.

The serpent cleaved through the body of the bear, splitting it into two halves with a single attack!

’So strong! Their durability is a joke in front of that!’

And Faust was free to attack while it did that, killing another bear using a Dash attack and spawning another golden serpent.

Each kill was automatically two kills with him and though Gold rank skills used a lot of mana, this passive ability used an amount he was okay with losing.

Nothing gained without loss in the end.

When he was surrounded, he simply used Narrow Path or Shadow Step to step out of the circle.

He could take glancing blows from the bears too with his armor’s 20% reduction of attacks.

A bear slammed into him with a charge but he used Bolster at the last second.

The world spun, wind hissing, as he flew back. He hit the sand once and bounced off, then twisted his body mid-air to land.

The ground was torn up, his feet digging rows in the sand as he slowed down.
