Chapter 120: High Noble; Crimson Lineage (1)

"Heh."

Cadvic let out a dry sound from the back of his throat that was a mixture of laughter and disgust. He didn’t shift his stance. He didn’t even lift his silver rapier from the toe of his boot.

He just stood there in the center of his self-made crater, his long silver hair whipping wildly in the crimson wind as he stared at Vera like she was nothing more than an amusing piece of trash that had drifted into his living room.

"Look around you!"

Cadvic’s voice suddenly boomed.

"This is my kingdom! Every drop of mist you breathe, every shattered spire you lean against, it belongs to the Silver Lineage! Even if all of you insects attack me at once—even if you crawl forward on your knees and scream your little spells until your lungs burst—you cannot touch a single thread of my cloak. You are nothing but walking leather sacks filled with blood. I could drain every single one of your pulses before the moon shifts an inch!"

Beneath my paper bag mask, my eyebrows furrowed.

’An ’A-’ rank vampire is definitely a monster,’ I thought. ’His mana density is thick enough to freeze the air, and his speed when he dropped from the spire was top-tier. But taking on all of us at once? That’s a massive overstatement.’

I glanced back slightly. Behind us, Grog was already gripping his massive broadsword with both hands. Seok had his blue spear perfectly balanced, his eyes scanning the noble’s posture for a single opening. And Black... Black was still standing there with his hands in his pockets.

Cadvic was strong, yes. But he was also trapped in the past. He was an ancient noble who hadn’t fought a group of modern high-ranking Hunters in three hundred years, maybe. He was drunk on his own history, blinded by the memory of a time when his family ruled over an entire world from the shadows.

"You talk too much for a doorman," I muttered.

"Insolent worm!" Cadvic roared.

At my words, his composure completely shattered. The crimson silk of his cloak snapped like a whip as he lunged forward. His speed was incredible as his claw targeted Vera’s throat in a straight trajectory.

I didn’t even move my dagger. I knew Vera. I knew the depth of her reflexes. Even with the lingering effects of the flu, a straight-line attack like that was something she could easily dodge by simply shifting her shoulder a bit to the side.

But the slash never came down.

SHREEEKT!

A sound like tearing metal exploded in the space between them. It wasn’t the sound of steel hitting steel. It was the sound of something moving so fast it literally ripped the air molecules apart.

In the exact same moment, a brilliant, blinding streak of blood-red lightning crackled across the avenue.

BZZZTT!

SPLAT!

A heavy, dark fluid sprayed across the cobblestones.

Cadvic’s silver rapier didn’t hit Vera. Instead, the weapon went flying through the air, spinning out of control until it clattered loudly into the red waters fifty meters away.

On the other side of the crater, a severed forearm hit the stone with a dull, wet thud.

’What... what was that?’

My eyes went wide behind the cutouts of my paper bag mask, and my heart skipped a beat against my ribs.

In front of Cadvic was standing that silent girl.

The quiet Hunter who hadn’t said a single word since we left the real world. The one I didn’t even know the name of, who had spent the entire journey simply hugging her sword close to her chest like a fragile doll.

Unlike before, her weapon was no longer sheathed. She held a long blade lifted horizontally in front of her face, the tip pointing directly at Cadvic’s bleeding shoulder. The metal of her blade was dark, almost black, but running along the edge were violent, buzzing arcs of that same red lightning.

It wasn’t Vera who had cut off Cadvic’s arm.

It was her.

All of this had happened in an instant. A literal fraction of a heartbeat. Not only I, but no one in our entire group had been able to see her movement.

One second she was standing five paces behind Hana at the rear of our circle, and the next, she was already standing in the center of the crater, her blade fully unsheathed and dripping with Cadvic’s dark, noble blood.

"Urrrggh...!"

A low, agonized groan escaped from Cadvic’s throat. He stumbled backward three steps, his left hand instantly clutching the empty stump of his right shoulder. Thick, blackish-red blood was erupting from the wound, pouring through his pale fingers and staining his elegant clothes.

His ruby eyes were no longer arrogant. They were wide, trembling, and filled with a chaotic mixture of shock and sudden terror as he stared at the girl standing in front of him.

’Who the heck is she, seriously?!’ I thought, my mind racing as I tried to search through the fragments of my memory. ’A sword user with red lightning? Someone from Vera’s past? Why am I meeting everyone I don’t know right at the beginning of my transmigration?!’

At the girl’s back, Vera went completely rigid. Her head wasn’t tilted toward Cadvic anymore.

"Carmilla..." Vera muttered so softly that the name barely left her lips.

The sound of that name made my brain freeze for a second.

’Carmilla? So, Vera really knows her?’

My gaze instantly snapped toward the side of Vera’s head. A sudden wave of suspicion rushed through my chest. When I had asked Vera for the contacts of some powerful, independent veterans, she had explicitly told me that these individuals were anonymous contacts from her old days—people who worked strictly for money and didn’t ask questions.

She had implied they were just regular Hunters without anything extraordinary.

But the girl standing in front of us wasn’t normal at all. The way red lightning was crackling around her, the way her presence completely suppressed the surrounding pressure of fear... it... it... I don’t know what it is!

’Is Vera keeping secrets from me? Just like me?’ The thought tasted bitter in the back of my mouth. ’It isn’t like I was going to keep it a secret from her anyway. I was gonna tell her about my system after we dealt with Black.’

Before I could process my thoughts any further, the silence was broken by the ragged breathing of the other Hunters. Every single one of them was staring at the crater with wide, disbelieving eyes.

"How... how did she go from here to there in an instant?" Grog muttered, his deep voice cracking as his heavy broadsword wavered in his grip. "I didn’t even see a blur. She didn’t even use a step skill! It was just... pop, and the arm was gone!"

Jisu’s ring-covered hands were shaking so violently that the yellow aura completely dissolved. "That’s not human speed. That’s... that’s spatial distortion or something worse. Who did you hire, kid?!"

But more than any of us, the vampire in front of the girl was the most shocked. Cadvic’s pale face had gone completely white, and the black veins on his forehead were throbbing violently as he stared at the dark blade buzzing with red lightning, then at the girl’s face.

"You..." Cadvic let out, his voice trembling so much that his fangs clicked together. "Impossible..."

"Those eyes... That lightning..."

"Ca... Carmilla?!" The noble vampire stuttered.

"You remembered," the girl responded in a low tone.

"It’s impossible. Your lineage was purged! The Grand Elder himself threw your entire coven into the Blood Fire! How are you still breathing? Is it really you... Carmilla?!"

The quiet girl didn’t flinch. She slowly lowered her blade, her dark hair falling over her pale cheeks as she looked down at the bleeding noble from the edge of the crater. Her expression wasn’t angry or vengeful. It was completely empty. It was the expression of someone who had already died a long time ago and was simply moving a corpse through the motions.

"Uncle," Carmilla spoke, her voice carrying a soft, hollow echo that sounded like wind passing through an empty tomb. "This is for killing my family."

’What?!!!’ I screamed internally, my brain completely short-circuiting as the words hit my ears. ’Uncle? UNCLE?! Just what the heck is going on here!’

This wasn’t just a random Gate raid anymore. This was a literal family reunion from hell. A high-noble vampire who thought he was the king when the real king was still alive and waiting for us in his castle, and his niece who could move faster than a lightning strike, both sharing the same bloodline, perhaps?. And somehow, my blind "girlfriend" Vera had her personal contact information saved in her mind.

The other Hunters watched with wide, stunned eyes just like me. Hana looked like she was about to faint right about now, and Seok’s analytical mind seemed to be struggling to calculate the new dynamics at play. The only difference was that while everyone else had their eyes locked onto the quiet girl and her bleeding uncle, my gaze was fixed entirely on Vera.

She had moved back. The moment the red lightning had flashed, she had quietly retreated half a step, standing perfectly still beside me once again, her small hand reaching out until her fingers lightly grabbed the fabric of my sleeve.

She was acting like nothing had happened. Like she hadn’t just brought a family member of the half-boss monster into the Gate.

I leaned my head slightly toward her, my paper bag practically touching the edge of her mask.

"We need to have a very long conversation after this, Vera," I whispered into her ear, my voice carrying a sharp, absolute seriousness.

Vera didn’t turn her face toward me, but I could hear her mutter a few words very faintly.

"Yeah, we certainly do."
