Chapter 119: Vampires (2)
Dozens of pale figures were pouring out from every single crevice of the ruined city. They slid down the high spires like lizards, their long claws digging into the weathered stone, leaving deep gouges behind.
"They’re fast!" Jisu shouted. She raised her rings-covered hand and tightened it into a grip until one of the magical gemstones embedded in her rings began to glow with a yellow aura.
Beside her, Grog let out a deep grunt.
"Let them come," he rumbled. "I don’t care if they’re vampires or demons. A head still rolls when you hit it hard enough."
I didn’t say anything. I just kept my eyes locked on the front line, my fingers loosely wrapped around the hilt of my dagger.
Beneath my mask, my breathing was steady, but my mind was running through everything I knew. I wasn’t some combat god who could predict every single movement before it happened. I didn’t have thirty years of battlefield experience. What I did have were memories of this Gate and the notes from three heavy, dust-covered research journals.
When I first realized the coordinates Black left behind pointed to the Northern Fractures, I hadn’t just sat around waiting for the clock to run down. I had gone straight to the internet and searched for a specific late S-Rank Hunter. He was someone who was called a legendary Hunter in the novel.
He was someone who published everything that happened to him on the internet, whether good or bad.
And in the list of his published articles, I was able to find articles about vampires and hundreds of other races.
When he was a B-Rnak Hunter, he had nearly lost his entire team because he treated the creatures like brainless beasts. I wasn’t going to make that mistake.
’These aren’t wild animals,’ I thought, watching the way the pale figures moved. ’Look at the way they’re angling their approach. They aren’t just rushing us blindly. They’re trying to corral us away from the open avenue and squeeze us toward the narrower alleys.’
"Agis! Hold the right flank near the broken pillar!" I called out to Seok by a made-up name.
"Understood," Seok replied without a single second of hesitation. Apparently, he somehow understood that I was talking about him.
He stepped into the gap between Grog and the vampires at his back, snapping his brilliant blue spear forward in a blur of motion.
Screeech!
The vampire spat out dark, blackened fluid, its claws frantically scratching at the shaft of Seok’s spear, but Seok simply twisted his wrists and hurled the creature’s body straight into two others rushing from the shadows.
On the other side, Hana was trembling, but she didn’t drop her staff. The crystal at the tip of her staff exploded into a brilliant, flashing blue light.
"Frost Bind!" she screamed.
A wave of absolute-zero energy rippled across the cobblestones, instantly freezing the thin layer of crimson condensation on the ground. Three vampires who were sprinting toward her lost their footing, their feet slipping against the sudden ice as the frost crawled up their thin, tattered trousers, locking their joints in place.
"Hah!"
After that, Grog swung his broadsword in a massive, horizontal arc. The wind pressure alone cleared the sweet-smelling mist from the air. The heavy blade cleaved straight through the frozen vampires, shattering them into dozens of pieces.
It was a solid defense. They were working together, their individual high-ranking statuses finally showing as the initial panic began to fade.
But the sheer number of the vampire soldiers was overwhelming. For every three that Grog cleaved, five more crawled out from the red river.
Step.
A low, rhythmic sound echoed from the very rear of our group.
I didn’t even have to turn around to know who it was. Black was walking slowly behind us. His hands were still casually buried deep inside the pockets of his dark gray coat, his shoulders relaxed as if he were taking a casual stroll through a park in the middle of the night.
A massive vampire, easily eight feet tall with twisted, elongated limbs and a jaw that split open into four separate sections, dropped straight down from a third-story balcony. It aimed its razor-sharp claws directly at the back of Black’s neck.
However, Black didn’t even look up. He didn’t even flinch.
BOOM!
The moment the vampire entered a three-meter radius around his body, the air pressure didn’t just drop—it completely collapsed.
An invisible, crushing force of pure gravity slammed into the creature’s back with the weight of a falling mountain.
The vampire was violently flattened into the cobblestones. The stone tiles beneath its body shattered into fine powder, and its bones snapped instantly under the weight, turning its entire torso into a flattened, bloody paste before it could even let out a single sound.
Watching their comrade die, another two vampires tried to rush him from the left alley with incredibly fast movements.
CRASH!
The exact same thing happened. The moment their front claws crossed that invisible three-meter boundary, they were instantly slammed into the ground, their heads burying deep into the cracked stone as the gravity field pulverized their skulls.
Black kept walking, his boots stepping around the fresh craters of crushed flesh he was leaving behind.
’Terrifying,’ I thought, a drop of cold sweat running down my temple. ’He isn’t even actively using a skill. He’s just letting his gravitational force do the work.’
"Woo Jin," a sweet, quiet voice murmured right next to my ear.
Vera was standing half a step ahead of me. Her fingers were lightly touching the edge of her matching paper bag, her sightless eyes tilting slightly toward the dark roofs.
While the other hunters were sweating, breathing heavily, and swinging their massive weapons to keep the horde at bay, Vera looked entirely untouched. Her posture was relaxed, almost elegant, but the faint, intoxicating scent of her flower perfume was starting to mix with the heavy smell of blood in the air.
"They’re getting annoyed," Vera whispered. "The small ones are realizing they can’t break our circle. But the one on top... his heartbeat just skipped a beat."
High above us, on the tip of the sharp gothic spire, the silver-haired figure finally shifted his stance.
The crimson silk of his cloak snapped violently in the wind as he raised his silver rapier, and the thin blade caught the sickly red light of the bloated moon.

[Identity: Silver Lineage Family’s Duke; High Noble Cadvic]
[Danger Rating: Extremely High (A-)]
Whoosh!
The silver-haired vampire didn’t just jump; he completely vanished from the top of the spire.
The speed was unbelievable. A normal hunter’s eyes wouldn’t have even registered the movement. It looked like a streak of silver lightning cutting through the crimson sky, accompanied by a sharp, whistling sound that made my ears ring.
"Scatter!" I yelled.
Grog and Jisu threw themselves outward just in time as the silver streak slammed directly into the center of the cobblestone avenue, right where our feet had been a second ago.
BOOM!
A massive shockwave of wind and red mana erupted from the impact point, blowing away the remaining mist and sending a shower of stone splinters flying in every direction.
When the dust cleared, the High Noble Vampire was standing in the center of a shallow crater.
His long, silver hair fluttered lazily around his pale, translucent face. He slowly straightened his back, resting the tip of his elegant silver rapier against the toe of his polished black boot. His ruby-red, arrogant eyes swept across our group.
"Human cattle," he spoke. "You carry the scent of a world that still breathes. A world filled with warm blood and soft flesh. How delightful. It has been three hundred years since a living pulse entered these ruined gates."
He raised his rapier, pointing the silver tip directly at the center of my paper bag mask.
"Tell me, little insect," he sneered, his lips curling back to reveal his long, gleaming fangs. "Who gave you permission to walk through this kingdom? Who gave you permission to stain these streets with the filthy blood of my servants?"
The other hunters went completely still. Hana’s staff was shaking so badly that the blue light was flickering, and even Grog had lowered his broadsword slightly, his eyes wide as he tried to process the pure, crushing mana density radiating from the noble.
I didn’t back down. I stepped forward, my boots making a dull but confident sound against the stone.
"Nobody gave us permission, Cadvic," I said in a perfectly calm and casual tone, completely devoid of the fear he might be expecting. "We just saw an open door and decided to walk in. Though, I must say, your welcoming committee is a bit lackluster for a Duke of the Silver Lineage."
The moment the name left my lips, the arrogant smile on Cadvic’s face completely froze.
His ruby eyes went wide, the pupils dilating into tiny, sharp slits as his pale fingers tightened around the hilt of his rapier until the metal began to creak. The calm composure he had been maintaining vanished in an instant and was replaced by sudden shock.
"You..." Cadvic stammered. "You know my name? How can a filthy, masked creature know my lineage?"
Behind me, Seok’s eyes narrowed beneath his cartoon mask. He didn’t say anything, but his posture shifted into a deep, analytical stance. ’He knew his name before the creature even introduced itself,’ Seok thought. ’As expected. He already has the entire history of this Gate mapped out.’
Even Black paused, his dark eyes fixed intently on the side of my head. He knew I was sharp, but naming a specific high-ranked entity from a Gate was something that defied standard hunter logic.
"I know a lot of things, Cadvic," I replied. "I know about the civil war. I know about the empty blood reservoirs in your basement. And I know that your silver rapier hasn’t been polished in two centuries because you don’t even have enough strength left to maintain your family’s old reputation."
"Silence!" Cadvic roared, his pale face turning completely contorted with rage.
The silver hair on his head stood on end as a massive aura of dark purple and crimson mana exploded from his body, cracking the stone walls of the adjacent buildings.
Then, he raised his rapier, ready to turn the entire avenue into a slaughterhouse. But before he could even take his first step, Vera casually slid past me.
She stopped right at the edge of the crater. She didn’t drop into a defensive stance and just tilted her head slightly toward the high noble.
"You’re being too loud," Vera said softly. "And your breath smells like dust. If you take one more step toward him... I will peel that silver hair right off your skull."
