Chapter 101: Touch With Eyes
After finishing our dinner at the small local diner, we stepped out into the cool night air and began our long walk back toward the villa.
The streets were relatively empty and quiet. While my attention was focused on the path ahead of me, my right hand felt warm with Viora’s grip as she held my palm with her fingers.
Even though I was walking down the street, half of my thoughts were still focused on the events that happened inside the Gate, as well as the system quest I had received two days ago.
In the story, things were supposed to go down a completely bloodier route. The protagonist was only supposed to enter that Gate after Seok and his entire party of random members were ruthlessly wiped out by Prince Trion.
Because of their deaths, the Association had classified the area as an emergency anomaly, which eventually forced the main character to step in, clear the floor, and claim all the rewards for himself.
But this time, I had derailed that established timeline.
I cleared the Gate ahead of schedule, with neither Seok nor a single member of the squad having to lose their lives down in those waters.
’Maybe that is exactly what changed the reward I received from the Queen,’ I thought as my eyes scanned the empty storefronts we passed.
Because I had intervened early and altered those things, it must have caused a different outcome to appear. In the text, the protagonist received that absolute cheat item—the legendary black box capable of stopping time.
But because I arrived at a completely different time and handled the situation more efficiently than he was going to, the ending had shifted.
Instead of a temporal weapon, I ended up with a strange piece of old paper covered in unreadable symbols.
’Now that the Gate has been cleared without the main character even participating, I suppose the future events will be even more different than I remember.’

The realization wasn’t necessarily comforting. Now, it just meant I needed to be twice as careful.
My thoughts gradually drifted away from the timeline and shifted toward a much more pressing matter.
Black.
The system had handed me a very specific quest to find out exactly who and what he truly was.
Under normal circumstances, I would have thrown myself into investigating that guy. But the rush of the impending Gate raid had forced me to put everything else on hold.
I simply didn’t have the luxury of time. If I hadn’t gone inside with Seok and the others, the protagonist would have swept through the palace, collected everything, and I wouldn’t have even been able to get my hands on this piece of paper from the Queen.
’And more than anything, I want to avoid him as much as possible.’
Just thinking about it sent a cold shiver through my body. It wasn’t that I lacked confidence, but the scale of the main character’s powers was honestly terrifying.
He was a walking calamity second only to Jane. Getting caught in his problems this early was a guaranteed disaster.
’But now that the immediate threat of the Gate is settled... I can finally start finding out more about Black.’
As Viora and I continued walking side by side, I became so deeply lost in my own thoughts that I failed to notice a brick sitting directly on the pavement in front of a half-built building.
Thump.
Suddenly, Viora’s left foot collided heavily with the edge of the brick.
"Ah..."
A small grunt of discomfort left her lips, and she tightened her grip on my hand so fiercely that my bones lightly clicked against one another.

Instinctively, I snapped out of my thoughts and turned my entire body toward her.
With the streetlamp casting a pale yellow glow over her face, I noticed her eyes squinting tightly in irritation and her nose twitching slightly as her lips pressed into a thin line.
"What happened?" I asked, looking at her with a raised eyebrow.
Without saying a word, she subtly pointed her index finger toward the ground.
I glanced over and immediately spotted the red brick resting on the concrete. Crouching down, I picked up the heavy brick and tossed it toward the edge of the path.
"Are you okay?" I muttered.
Before she could even answer, I subconsciously reached out and gently grabbed her ankle, then lifted her foot slightly to examine the front of her shoe.
Gasp.
A sharp intake of breath escaped her mouth and, for no reason, she tried to pull her leg back.
"Woo Jin... you don’t have to do that. It doesn’t hurt that much."
"Hold still for a second," I replied while ignoring her resistance as I inspected her foot.
Fortunately, the impact hadn’t damaged her shoe, but a small streak of red dust was smeared directly across her toe.
I raised my thumb and gently wiped the dry dirt away until her shoe looked clean again. Then, I let go of her ankle and stood back up.
"How were you not able to notice a giant brick right in front of you when you were clearly avoiding every single attack underwater just a few hours ago?"
Hearing my question, Viora shifted her gaze away. She let out a small sigh before her expression turned serious.
"I... I have to concentrate very, very hard and focus all of my senses on the surroundings just to know exactly what is happening around me," she murmured. I could feel the slight frustration in her voice.

"If I could actually see with eyes, I would have been able to defeat that merman within just a few seconds. But my perception doesn’t work like that. I can’t easily notice completely still things."
So there is a clear limit to this trait? When I witnessed her crushing monsters with her bare hands in the swamp, I honestly thought her sensory ability was completely overpowered.
But hearing her explanation, the limitation made total sense. The universe was inherently balanced; an ability that granted unparalleled kinetic reflexes in battle had to have a blind spot. If an object didn’t possess a heartbeat, a flow of mana, or active momentum, it practically didn’t exist in her immediate awareness unless she was actively expending an immense amount of mental energy to search for it.
’That means she has to think and process her surroundings way more than a normal person just to walk down a street which must be incredibly exhausting.’
The more I thought about her mutations, the more complex and confusing it became.
She was a lethal weapon on the battlefield, yet simultaneously fragile in a world full of still objects.
Viora took a step closer and her hand slid down my arm until her fingers locked tightly with mine once again.
"Woo Jin..." She called out and slowly tilted her head upward as her eyes faced toward the night sky above the city buildings.
"Can you tell me what the moon looks like tonight?" she asked with a smile touching the corners of her lips. "It’s been a really long time since I have seen it."
I looked up at the silver crescent moon hanging high in the starless sky, casting a soft luminescence over the world.
Of course, it had been an incredibly long time since she had last seen the sky. But as I looked back down at her tilted face, a strange sensation settled deep in my chest.
’Why do I feel like she wasn’t actually asking about the moon at all? And was only asking because she simply wanted to hear my voice, to listen to me describe a world she couldn’t touch with her eyes.’
