Chapter 67: Making Friends With the Hero Might Be Better Than Killing Him.
Why is life so cruel?!
Despite trying my best to avoid that hell, I somehow ended up in it anyway.
Was it really that difficult to change fate?
Although the incident itself was trivial, it made me question the value of regression. Even after doing everything I could to alter such a small outcome, I somehow arrived at the same destination as before.
The path had changed but the destination remained the same and if that was some kind of defense mechanism of fate, then...
... Wouldn’t that mean, no matter how much I struggled, I would still become the Demon King, my Master would still die, Nyxara would still sacrifice herself for me, Lily would still come close to destroying the world and in the end, that damned bastard, Aurelion, would kill both Lily and me once again.
What if despite anything I do, despite no matter how many paths I change, that ends up being the final outcome?
Did I need to kill Aurelion before any of that could happen? After all, wasn’t he the focal point of everything?
Hell, I didn’t even need to look at his status window with my [[Eye of Usurper]] to know that. I was certain he had some ridiculous role like The Protagonist or The Chosen One because the world practically revolved around him.
Despite being a mere mortal, he had fought Gods and Calamities like Lily and somehow, he had survived them all.
Honestly, I had never considered killing him this early because doing so would make me the enemy of all three continents once again, just like in my previous life.
With my current strength, I wouldn’t even be able to defend myself, let alone escape. So I had always planned to think about it only after becoming strong enough to protect both myself and the people around me.
After seeing that even something as insignificant as avoiding Ruan’s extra class had somehow become impossible, the thought of eliminating that bastard surfaced once more.
But then again, would his death even matter? Or would someone else, someone stronger will rise up against me?
Lost in those thoughts, I continued walking, my legs trembling with every step while the very same bastard I was considering killing supported me on the way back to the dorms.
"Thanks for the help, Prin—I mean... Aurelion."
His eyebrow twitched the moment I almost called him ’Prince’ before his expression relaxed once more. I had no idea why he hated being addressed by that title but even in my previous life, he loathed it.
"No worries." He smiled. "Friends are meant to help each other, aren’t they?"
"Huh?"
This time, it was my turn to be surprised.
I knew this bastard was an overly optimistic fool but he definitely wasn’t stupid. Seeing my confusion, he awkwardly scratched the back of his head.
"Are... we not friends?" He asked hesitantly. "If not, then can we become friends? I would really like that."
Here I was, considering whether I should kill him and this bastard was wondering how to become my friend.
But then again, if this guy was practically offering himself to me on a silver platter, who was I to refuse? And who knows, maybe someday, I could make use of him.
I mean, even if he really was fate’s chosen one, killing him might not be the smartest option.
Instead of letting fate create another enemy to replace him, manipulating him and using him, seemed like the better choice.
I wasn’t sure whether it would actually work but it was worth trying and besides, even though I had called him my natural enemy in my previous life, that had mostly been a narrative woven by Seles.
At that moment, I found myself wanting to look at his status window more than ever because I was certain it would answer many of my questions but the problem was, I had no idea how his [[Insight]] would react to my [[Eye of Usurper]].
Still, there was something I was curious about.
"Why do you want to be my friend, Aurelion?" I looked at him. "From everything you have seen, I am sure you can see how deep in trouble I already am."
"Many nobles already hate me and I have even managed to attract the anger of some professors. So if you stay around me, you will only end up dragging yourself into unnecessary trouble."
I paused for a moment.
"Even knowing all that, why do you still want to be my friend?"
Aurelion looked at me before flashing his usual bright smile.
"Why does someone need a reason to be another person’s friend?"
Those words, along with that silly smile of his, pulled a distant memory to the surface of my mind, a memory I had deliberately hoped to forget.
It was during my second week at the academy, back then, the Empire had already branded me a pervert and my academic life had all but ceased to exist.
I still remembered a group of first-year nobles dragging me into an alley before beating me mercilessly, hoping to earn Rodrick’s favor.
Back then, Aurelion had been the one who saved me. He had worn that same silly smile and he had said almost those exact same words.
Even when Seles pretended to be in love with me, Aurelion had always treated me like a friend and was one of the very few who actually trusted that I hadn’t committed that crime.
At the same time, another memory surfaced, one from several years later, where he was wearing a smile as well... a smile of despair as he held a dead body close to his chest.
"I will kill you, Zenith."
"I regret ever calling you my best friend. You are not worthy of being called a friend. You are nothing but a cold-hearted monster, a Demon King."
As those two memories stirred something unpleasant within me, I stared at the sky for a brief moment before looking back at him.
"Alright."
A small smile formed on my face.
"We can definitely be friends."
I chuckled.
"Just don’t promise to kill me someday."
He laughed along with me, assuming it was just another joke.
"Don’t worry." He grinned. "I would never betray a friend and if I ever do something like that, I am willing to forfeit my manhood."
The poor guy laughed without realizing he had made that exact same promise in my previous life and I had made sure he kept it by crushing his nuts.
