Chapter 406: Chapter 406: Profit Without Sincerity
After dropping the kids at school, Vincent Hawthorne drove to the company.
On the way, he called Adam and asked how the preparations were going.
Adam said, "Mr. Hawthorne, don’t worry, there’s been a situation on the island. Usually, no power breaks into our village, but yesterday someone came to the village to take people away..."
"What?" Vincent’s brow furrowed, "Who did they take? Was it Tanya Sinclair?"
"I’m not sure yet, but they took a man and a woman..."
A man and a woman...
Could it be Tanya Sinclair and Felix Kendall?
Vincent felt uneasy: "Confirm their identities as soon as possible. Especially the woman!"
"This isn’t within my responsibilities, Mr. Hawthorne..." Adam sounded troubled.
Understanding what he meant, Vincent replied in a serious tone, "I’ll pay more."
Adam immediately smiled, "Alright, it’s my honor to work for Mr. Hawthorne. My connections on the island are quite extensive, expect my update by tomorrow at the latest!"
Vincent couldn’t be bothered with Adam’s nonsensical idioms and hung up the phone.
He returned to the company, finished handling documents, and then attended a meeting with several executives.
Throughout the meeting, Vincent didn’t look too pleased, which made the executives uneasy. They anxiously endured until the meeting concluded.
Back in his office, Vincent tiredly asked Jonah Rivers, "What’s lined up for noon?"
Jonah confirmed the schedule, "President Hawthorne, there’s nothing work-related, but you do have a personal appointment..."
Annoyed, Vincent raised his gaze, "What personal appointment? Cancel it for me."
Seeing Vincent’s displeasure, Jonah didn’t dare elaborate and simply said, "Alright, I’ll send Miss Thorne away and tell her you have an important business engagement."
Miss Thorne...
Vincent hesitated slightly, "Leah Thorne?"
"Yes, she mentioned her name was Leah Thorne," Jonah confirmed. "She told the front desk about the appointment, and they reported it to me. But you were in a meeting at that time, so I didn’t interrupt."
Vincent recalled, indeed he had promised Leah Thorne a meeting that day.
"When did she arrive?"
Jonah glanced at the time, "Two hours ago."
Vincent: "..."
Jonah said, "President Hawthorne, I’ll send her away now..."
As Jonah turned to leave, he was stopped by Vincent’s voice from behind.
"Wait." Vincent took a deep breath, "I’ll go see her later, don’t worry about it."
"Yes." Jonah wasn’t surprised by Vincent’s change of mind, after all, anyone who had met Leah Thorne would understand why. He dutifully asked, "Should I book a restaurant for you and Miss Thorne?"
"No need, go back to your duties."
"Yes."
After Jonah left, Vincent sat in his chair for a while longer, then took his coat and headed downstairs.
Leah Thorne wasn’t important enough to be invited to the VIP lounge, so she sat in a corner of the lobby, flipping through the company brochure.
Today, she wore a light-colored knit dress with a matching coat. Her long hair flowed softly down her back, making her look as clean and pure as fresh snow.
Vincent didn’t approach her immediately. He stood behind Leah, observing her silently for a moment before striding forward.
"Why didn’t you contact me directly?" Vincent spoke.
Leah was startled, turned around, and flashed her usual radiant and gentle smile upon seeing Vincent.
"I didn’t want to disturb you, so I waited downstairs."
"How long have you been here?" Vincent asked.
Leah lied, "Not long, just a little while."
Vincent glanced at the two coffee cups on the table, easily seeing through her lie.
"You’ve had two cups of coffee, yet you say it hasn’t been long?"
Leah surrendered, "Okay, detective, about two hours. It’s fine, I was just reading a book, learning more about your company for my upcoming internship."
Vincent smiled, "Really? Planning to intern here?"
"Working at The Hawthorne Group would be the best, of course," Leah admitted without hesitation. "But I have two other companies as backups."
Vincent raised an eyebrow, "I’m not your only choice?"
The remark was flirtatious yet not frivolous, coupled with Vincent’s focused gaze. With such enchanting eyes, whether or not he was a playboy, just one look at a woman was enough to imply affection.
Leah’s heart raced a bit, but reason prevailed.
Falling for a man like Vincent, she could foresee her fate—being consumed, leaving not even a trace of bones.
She was clear-headed enough to seek benefits, not genuine affection.
