Chapter 149: Chapter 149: I Didn’t Mean to Flirt With You

Ivy Sherwood lunged over and covered Quentin Blackwood’s mouth, terrified of what he might say next.

Her warm palm touched his nose and lips, carrying the scent of hand soap.

To Quentin, the scent was cheap, but not unpleasant.

When she lunged, Ivy herself probably didn’t realize that her body was pressed against his.

’There’s a driver right in front of us, yet Quentin is being so brazen. What will I do if word gets out?’

"Uncle, watch what you say!"

Quentin Blackwood grabbed Ivy’s hand and pulled it away.

"Did you wash your hands?" he asked, his expression one of mild disgust.

Quentin’s supposed germaphobia wasn’t just an act.

"I came from the restroom," Ivy said deliberately. "I didn’t wash them."

Ivy glanced at the driver in the rearview mirror. He had a stoic expression, seemingly focused only on driving.

This was Quentin Blackwood’s driver. He had been with Quentin for years and certainly knew what he shouldn’t hear and what he shouldn’t say.

But that didn’t stop him from glancing in the rearview mirror and indulging in a little mental gossip about his boss.

He had followed his boss for several years now and had never seen a young woman in his car, let alone one bantering flirtatiously with him.

On the surface, the driver remained impassive, but inwardly he was laughing uncontrollably.

He was so engrossed in the drama that he almost forgot to watch the road. A child suddenly darted out in front of the car, forcing him to slam on the brakes.

The inertia threw her forward. Ivy subconsciously threw her arms around the man’s neck, and Quentin’s hand instantly wrapped around her waist, stopping her from pitching forward.

Her waist was slender and supple, a perfect handful. A feather seemed to trace a line across Quentin’s heart, leaving an unbearable itch.

"Is everything okay?" Ivy asked, seeing the child run past.

The driver shook his head. "We’re fine. I’m sorry, Boss."

"Be more careful," Quentin said.

As the car started moving again, Ivy realized her hands were still around Quentin’s neck and his hand was still wrapped around her waist. They were practically molded together.

She lifted her gaze and saw his face up close—his sharply defined jawline, his handsome features perfectly proportioned.

’I have to admit, he’s really handsome.’

’A rugged sort of handsomeness, a blend of toughness and refinement.’

Her heart began to race uncontrollably. ’If only I could keep looking at him like this...’

The moment Quentin lowered his gaze to look at her, Ivy quickly averted her own.

She gave him a little push and pulled away from his embrace.

She was breathless. Ivy quickly composed herself, pretending nothing had happened, and held up three fingers.

"And third, at the dinner table earlier—I only brushed against you by accident. I absolutely was not trying to hit on you, I swear!"

’Whose fault was it that Quentin’s legs were so long? She could brush against them with the slightest movement.’

’She even had reason to suspect that Quentin had stretched his legs out that far on purpose.’

Thinking about how Quentin had nudged her back, Ivy said, "Actually, it was what you did afterward, Uncle, that was easy to misinterpret."

"Oh, really? What exactly did you misinterpret? Do tell."

"Nothing." Ivy looked out the window. "So, where are we actually going?"

’Ivy wasn’t afraid. She didn’t believe Quentin would actually sell her off. Besides, she didn’t think she was worth much to begin with.’

Quentin didn’t say where they were going, nor did he continue to tease her.

Soon, the car stopped in front of a restaurant.

"Get out," Quentin said.

Ivy got out and looked at the restaurant. ’Did Quentin bring me here to eat?’

Seeing Quentin walking ahead, Ivy quickly followed.

’Those legs really were long. From behind, his posture was ramrod straight, and he naturally projected an elegant aura, like that of a royal prince.’

"Mr. Blackwood, your private room is this way." A waiter led Quentin over.

Ivy recognized this restaurant; it was one of those places that was incredibly hard to book.

Ivy followed Quentin to the private room. The waiter handed them menus, and Quentin gestured for her to order. "Order whatever you like."

Ivy had only eaten a couple of bites earlier, so she wasn’t very hungry now.

"I’m not that hungry. Why don’t you order, Uncle?"

Quentin ordered a few dishes. The portions here were relatively small, just right for two people.

Ivy had assumed Quentin brought her out because he had something to say. She never expected he’d just treat her to a meal without saying anything in particular.

"Uncle, did you bring me out just to eat?"

Ivy couldn’t understand it. Why go to all the trouble of eating somewhere else when they could have just eaten with Nina and the others?

She hadn’t really seen Quentin touch his chopsticks back there. ’Maybe he didn’t like the food, or maybe he just doesn’t like eating in large groups,’ she mused.

’But if he didn’t want to eat with other people, why did he even sit down?’

A bold thought occurred to Ivy. ’Could it be... because of me?’

’But I wasn’t even there then. I was hiding. Quentin couldn’t have seen me, so that theory falls apart.’

"What, you’d rather be eating with Seth Scott?"

Ivy: "..."

’Why does Quentin always bring up Seth Scott? There’s really nothing going on between us.’

Since they were already seated, Ivy ate a little more. As she ate, her cheeks puffed out like a little squirrel’s.

At some point, Quentin put down his chopsticks and just watched her.

Only after Ivy had eaten her fill did Quentin take her back.

"Thanks for dinner, Uncle. Next time, it’s my treat."

Quentin sneered. ’Already thinking about a next time? In her dreams.’

They had only just seen each other, and she was already planning their next meeting.

Ivy returned to her company. As soon as she walked in, Edie saw her and came over to talk about some work matters.

"Oh, right, Boss. Your good friend Nina Scott is in your office."

’Nina’s here?’

Ivy hurried back to her office and, sure enough, there was Nina Scott.

"Ivy, didn’t you say you had work at the company? Where did you run off to?"

Ivy hadn’t expected Nina to come. She opened her mouth and stammered, "I... I just had something to take care of."

’I can’t just tell her I went out to eat with Quentin Blackwood, can I?’

"That Joy Sheridan ordered way too much, and a lot of it was untouched. You left in such a hurry and didn’t eat much, so I thought I’d bring it over for you. You can have a few bites when you’re not busy."

Nina was worried she’d be hungry and had made a special trip to bring her food. Ivy was deeply touched.

She hugged Nina and gave her a big kiss on the cheek. "You’re the best, Nina."

"I know, I know. I’m the best friend in the whole wide world."

’I just had a second dinner with Quentin. I’m completely stuffed and can’t eat another bite.’

"I’ll save it for later tonight." Ivy put the containers in the refrigerator. The office had standard amenities like a fridge and a microwave.

Nina didn’t have anything else to do, so she left after dropping off the food.

Ivy worked alone in her office until nightfall. The moon and stars hung in the sky, and the city gradually grew quiet.

She was the only one left in the company. Deep in the night, a pile of documents was still stacked in front of her.

’When there are no shortcuts in life, all you can do is rely on yourself.’
