Chapter 160: Another Star Wheel
"Although I don’t know what they encountered, it seemed they were unable to get to their target, and the fourth Tier One evolver of the camp—a healer—ended up dying." Nicolas paused, then continued. "I don’t know what exactly the stars are, but I believe they must be something beneficial as the former leader was still thinking about going back even though he didn’t dare to."
Once he stopped speaking, everywhere turned silent, and only the sound of breathing could be heard.
Finally, Emily whispered with a dazed expression, "Another wheel..."
While Nicolas was confused, everyone else was familiar with this term. After all, they had all seen the Equipment Star Wheel back in Brooklyn.
Leon slowly set down his spoon, a serious expression on his face.
"If there’s another wheel close by..."
His black eyes glinted with a hint of desire, which was shared by Marie and Selene. They knew how much of a cheat a Star Wheel was.
"Do we go get the others first, or search for it before we do that?" Selene asked, her gaze fixed on Leon.
The young man pondered deeply about it. The threat of Manhattan’s zombie horde was still present, so he couldn’t waste too much time before going to get the other survivors from Brooklyn.
’But... I guess I can afford to spare another day or two. Then, regardless of our success or failure, we’ll go get Fel and the others.’
Sighing in his heart, he answered Selene, "We’re going to search for the wheel in a few hours. Get ready."
Turning to Nicolas, he asked, "Can I get a rough approximation of the area around which the star fell?"
The man nodded, even though he was still confused. It wasn’t like he was in the position to ask questions.
"Wait, what about me?" Marie asked as she pointed at herself.
Leon glanced at her, then shook his head. "You’re still injured, so you can’t follow us. Besides, I’ll be trusting you to keep this place in order before we return."
Marie frowned faintly, then nodded. "Alright, leave it to me."
Although she hated the feeling of not being strong enough to help or not being in the best condition, she wasn’t the type to sulk.
Besides, just as Leon had said, he would need someone to keep an eye on the militia of the camp.
Nicolas smiled bitterly when he realized he still hadn’t gained the trust of their new leader. Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do about it.
"It’s concluded, then," Leon said, then spoke to a particular duo. "Emily and Jones, you’ll be staying back to support Marie. Is that clear?"
They both nodded, not minding the tone of his voice. They definitely didn’t want to antagonize someone like Leon, as he wouldn’t even hesitate to kill them.
Their wariness and desire to live was also the reason Leon could leave them with Marie without worrying too much.
’Besides, it’s not like they can actually hurt her anyway.’
......
A few hours later, Leon and Selene left the Core Ring of the settlement. When they got to the Outer Ring, the change was starting to become obvious.
Survivors weren’t sitting around idly, looking starved anymore. Instead, they were engaged in different kinds of menial jobs such as cleaning the surroundings or rebuilding collapsed buildings and fixing broken structures.
"Oh?" Leon raised an eyebrow in surprise, then cast a questioning gaze towards Selene.
The young lady noticed his gaze and gave an explanation, saying, "To avoid conflict born from idleness, I made a policy that those who contributed to the settlement could receive 30% increase in their daily food rations, and an extra piece of meat. Now, everyone is working so they can receive this benefit."
Leon nodded indifferently, but was amazed at heart. Selene’s plan was truly brilliant, as it solved two problems at once. By giving them work to do, with a little motivation, the survivors would have no time or concentration to focus on their fears and express their dark desires. Also, they were working to keep the entire settlement tidy and improving the condition of the Outer Ring.
Also, the laws Leon had mandated were already in effect, and each perpetrator was met with instant death from the patrol officers. Although this was cruel, it served as a great warning to those who still had dark thoughts in their hearts.
’I really hope humanity has a chance at reclaiming the world someday...’
Finally, after a short walk, they arrived at the edge of the forest leading into the area where Nicolas had pointed out.
"You should get prepared," Leon said, brushing his fingers against the surface of his new armor.
[Undead King’s Keep]
[Rank: Tier Two]
[Enchantment: ]
[1. When worn, grants 5% resistance to fire, ice, water, earth, and lightning element]
[2. Passively stalls bleeding of any wound inflicted on the wearer, and increases their healing capability by 20%]
[Defense Power: 2000]
[Durability: 1500/1500]
[Description: A special armor crafted from the remains of the Tier Two Undead King Hobold]
The armor was truly impressive, even better than the Phantom Assault Armor. Although that one provided more support, the defense power of this particular armor made him choose it over the Phantom Assault Armor.
Taking a deep breath, he walked into the forest along with Selene. None of them said anything, but the silence wasn’t awkward by any means. Soon, they came across their first opponent—an unranked mutated warthog.
Leon restrained it with shadow hands while Selene ended its life with a single ice bullet.
Leon immediately noticed the difference in her strength, and was surprised. At this moment, he wasn’t sure who was stronger between the two of them.
’Not that I’d like to find out anyway.’
They continued deeper into the forest, crossing paths with several unranked creatures and even some Tier One beasts. Of course, all the beasts died by their hands, and the best ones were stored in Leon’s storage ring.
After two hours of walking, they took a moment to rest. Although they could still continue searching, it was better to pause and regain some stamina before resuming.
Leon watched Selene sheath her sword, then spoke unconsciously.
"You’re very skilled with the sword."
She glanced at him, her blue eyes narrowing, but seeing the curiosity in his eyes, she sighed.
"I learned it from my family."
Her words made Leon blink, as he immediately remembered her full name.
’Selene White... wait. White...?!’
