Chapter 303: Chapter 185: Tiger’s Roar in the Urban Area
Just as the special task force was hitting a dead end, with pressure mounting by the day, a chance piece of news brought a breakthrough.
A young police officer from a precinct under the Binjiang City Bureau happened to have a classmate working as an officer in the Donghua City Bureau.
While the two were chatting, the classmate mentioned that the Donghua City Bureau had recently hired a remarkable "animal advisor" who could command a Beaked Eagle in search and rescue missions, solve major cases with a police cat and dog, and had even received a commendation from the deputy mayor.
The speaker may have said it casually, but the listener took it to heart.
The Binjiang officer immediately realized this could be helpful to the special task force and promptly reported the information to his superior.
The news traveled up the chain of command, soon landing on the desk of Deputy Director Tang Yuan, the head of the special task force.
Tang Yuan was skeptical at first.
Commanding a Beaked Eagle?
A police cat solving cases?
It sounded like something out of a fantasy novel.
But the case was urgent, and he couldn’t afford to ignore even the faintest glimmer of hope.
He personally called a deputy director he knew at the Donghua City Bureau and asked for details about Yang Qi.
After hearing about Yang Qi’s exploits, Tang Yuan realized this might not be an exaggeration, but a true expert with a special talent.
To show his sincerity and respect, and to ensure they could persuade this "marvel," Tang Yuan dispatched Shen Ruiping, along with the equally capable Fei Gang, to personally drive to Donghua and extend the invitation.
After hearing the whole convoluted story, Yang Qi understood.
"Thank you, Director Tang and the Binjiang Police, for your high regard. To be honest, that’s a lot of pressure."
"Advisor Yang, please don’t say that!"
Shen Ruiping quickly reassured him. "Your willingness to come is the greatest help you could offer. Solving this case is a collective responsibility; we’re all under pressure. Just do what you do best. Use your professional knowledge and special skills to help us open up new lines of thinking and find a direction. That’s more than enough."
As they talked during the drive, their understanding of each other deepened considerably.
Although Shen Ruiping had a serious exterior, he was a meticulous thinker and decisive in his actions. He was also deeply respectful of his subordinates and partners—a commander one could trust.
The two cars, one following the other, drove steadily along the highway, gradually entering the Binjiang region.
As they neared the urban area of Binjiang, the sky, which had been reasonably clear, suddenly darkened. Storm clouds gathered rapidly.
Accompanied by a few muffled claps of thunder, fat raindrops began to patter down, instantly forming a dense curtain of rain. Visibility dropped sharply.
"What terrible timing for a downpour," Shen Ruiping said, frowning as he looked out the window.
Both cars switched on their hazard lights, reduced their speed, and carefully navigated the highway exit in the torrential rain.
Fei Gang’s car led the way, heading for the temporary accommodations arranged by the city bureau.
But not long after they entered a main city road, they hit a traffic jam. The long line of cars was at a standstill.
The thunderstorm, however, came and went in a flash. It soon subsided, and light reappeared on the horizon.
Shen Ruiping was about to open his door and get out to see what was happening up ahead.
Suddenly—
"Aaaah... Run!"
"Tiger! There’s a tiger!!"
"..."
From just up ahead came the terrified screams and panicked footsteps of a crowd.
People who had gotten out of their cars to wait or see what was causing the traffic jam were now like a startled herd, faces filled with terror, frantically running back the way they came.
"What’s going on?!"
Shen Ruiping’s heart clenched as he pushed open the car door.
At almost the same moment, a clear, powerful roar, filled with savage energy, exploded in front of the vehicle like a sudden clap of thunder.
"ROAR—"
As Shen Ruiping stared in astonishment and Yang Qi watched with narrowed eyes, a powerfully built Bengal White Tiger, its fur snow-white with black stripes, appeared from behind the roof of a panel van just ahead of their SUV!
It leaped up with agile grace, its massive body carving a powerful arc through the air. With a heavy THUD, it landed solidly on the roof of their SUV.
The vehicle rocked slightly.
Inside the car, Bai Wan immediately tensed up, a low, warning growl rumbling in his throat as his fur bristled.
Xiaojiu also dropped into a crouch, her green eyes fixed on the roof, letting out a "meow" that was both wary and eager for a fight.
The White Tiger remained on the roof for less than a second before using it as a springboard to leap again, landing lightly on the hood of a sedan behind them.
Then, with a few powerful bounds, it disappeared into the chaotic traffic and panicked crowd, leaving behind a street full of screams and utter disarray.
"WOOF!"
"What kind of beast was that?"
Bai Wan barked nervously.
"Meow~"
"Master, should we give chase?"
Xiaojiu cried, eager for a fight.
"Relax. You two stay in the car."
Yang Qi quickly calmed his two Guardian Beasts. Pushing open the car door, he spoke rapidly to the still-dazed Shen Ruiping, "Captain Shen, you contact the bureau and any nearby police units. Report our location and the situation. I’m going to follow that tiger and do my best to contain it and keep it from hurting anyone."
"Right... right."
Shen Ruiping replied automatically.
Yang Qi shut the car door and was about to sprint in the direction the White Tiger had vanished.
But just as he took his first step, another, equally loud tiger roar came from an intersection ahead of them—in the opposite direction of the first tiger’s escape!
"ROAR—"
’There’s another one?’
Yang Qi froze, cursing inwardly.
’What the hell is going on in Binjiang?’
’Tigers popping up in the city center in broad daylight?’
’And they’re all White Tigers?’
’Is this a major screw-up at the Zoo, or is it related to that ’animal killer’ case?’
"Xiaojiu, Bai Wan, stay in the car."
Yang Qi said quickly.
When facing tigers, it was safer for his two furry kids to stay in the car.
