Chapter 188: Chapter 150: Curious Baby (2)
"Yes, Young Master." Smith bowed slightly, then smiled at Lorna. "Miss Lorna, please come with me."
"Ah... I don’t think I need to. What I’m wearing is already fine." It was unclear if Lorna didn’t want to spend more of Isaac’s money or simply had no concept of equipment, but she frowned at her Leather Armor as she spoke.
"Go buy a set. What you’re wearing... doesn’t look like something worn by someone associated with Nobility. You may not be a noble, but I am. When you’re out with me, you’re representing me. If you’re dressed too shabbily, it’ll be a real headache for me."
Although they hadn’t known each other long, Isaac had already figured out a simple way to get along with Lorna. The girl treated him completely differently than she treated others.
Sure enough, Lorna’s expression changed as soon as she heard him. After a moment’s hesitation, she nodded to Smith. "I’ll have to trouble you then, Mr. Smith."
"It is my duty. Please, come with me." Smith smiled and bowed before leading Lorna out of the council hall.
After they left, Isaac made some more detailed arrangements for Liu Li and the others, especially Shushu. It wouldn’t be easy for it to establish its own combat system.
This was because it was the epitome of a standard Mage class from Isaac’s previous life—a glass cannon!
Extremely squishy!
Even squishier than Isaac!
Isaac merely lacked defensive methods; his own body was actually quite sturdy, just not on par with a melee brute. Shushu, however, had an inherent racial disadvantage. Not only did it lack defensive measures, but its body was also frail!
Most importantly, Necromancy Magic was hard to come by. This was especially true because many of its principles clashed with those of the Flesh Sect, which meant Isaac couldn’t help it in this area.
At least, he couldn’t help right now. It would have to rely on itself.
’Because the materials for the Evil God ritual related to the Undead still haven’t been gathered...’
Therefore, it had to develop its combat system on its own. Of course, it was unrealistic to expect it to manage entirely by itself. Isaac would sometimes assist from the sidelines. After all, even though Isaac hadn’t studied Necromancy, he had obtained related Forbidden Knowledge from the Black Orc God.
Besides, it was Isaac who had passed his Knowledge of Necromancy to Shushu in the first place. With his intelligence, assisting it was no problem at all.
Before long, Smith returned with a somewhat embarrassed Lorna.
Lorna had changed out of her exceptionally cheap Leather Armor and was now wearing a brown, trench-coat-like outfit. Although it had a long tail, it was enchanted with special Magic that prevented it from hindering her flexibility in combat.
It was the most common style for Combat Mages. The inside of the garment had multiple pockets for small weapons or Casting materials. And though it appeared to be made primarily of cloth, its defense against physical attacks was no worse than a Knight’s plate mail.
And its Magic Resistance was even better.
Besides the outfit, the Longsword at Lorna’s waist and the dagger strapped to her thigh had also been upgraded. The dagger looked unremarkable, with no distinguishing features, so Isaac couldn’t tell what was special about it. However, since Smith had helped pick it out, he assumed it was certainly an improvement over her previous one.
The Longsword, however, Isaac recognized. He had researched this series of weapons before!
The main difference between its appearance and a Knight’s Longsword was the Magic Gemstone on its hilt. Indeed, it also functioned as a Magic Staff. The proper term for such weapons was "Staff Sword," and they were used exclusively by Combat Mages.
It could be used for close combat as well as for Casting, serving both purposes.
It perfectly suited Isaac’s tastes. Unfortunately, a weapon like this required a talent for close combat, as well as a great deal of grueling training and practical experience—two things Isaac happened to lack. He barely had enough time for his Magic research; how could he possibly have the energy to pour into melee training?
It might have been worth it if Close Combat Mages were powerful, but they weren’t. In fact, they grew progressively weaker.
A person’s energy is limited; you can’t keep up with your Magic studies while also maintaining sufficient training in Combat Techniques. That was why the Combat Mage had always been a rather niche discipline, one that grew weaker the further one progressed...
Their close combat couldn’t match a Knight’s, and their Magic couldn’t match a Pure Mage’s. It was a discipline followed only by a small number of faithful enthusiasts.
"Hmm, it suits you. You should have changed into this a long time ago." Isaac nodded in satisfaction as he looked at the dashing Lorna.
Seeing Isaac’s pleased expression, Smith, standing behind Lorna, also showed a look of satisfaction. ’Excellent,’ he thought, ’it seems there’s hope.’
Unlike the master and his servant, however, Lorna was not nearly as pleased. Her small, fair hands twisted nervously before her stomach. Frowning adorably, she said, "But this is so expensive! Do you know how much it was? All this cost almost ten thousand Gold Coins!"
"Bah, wealth is fleeting... huh? What did you say? Ten thousand Gold Coins?!" Isaac, who had been about to act magnanimous, snapped to his senses. His eyes widened as he stared at Smith. ’What’s the deal? Ten thousand Gold Coins for one set of gear? I’m still wearing the starter set I got when I first became a Legendary Mage!’
Smith gave a helpless shrug. "To answer the Young Master, yes, it was ten thousand Gold Coins. The main issue is the lack of equipment for Combat Mages. This was the only suitable set. There was a cheaper option and a more expensive one. The cheap one cost five hundred Gold Coins, but its quality was subpar. The expensive one... was three million Gold Coins. We couldn’t afford that..."
Isaac: "..."
’So this is what it means to be a Mage, huh?’
He now had a much deeper understanding of the word. ’Looks like I’ll have to level up my Alchemy Skill as soon as possible!’
’See? This is how the market for Wizard products becomes an arms race.’
Sighing, Isaac waved a hand dismissively. ’Well, it’s already bought. So be it. I’m a man worth tens of millions now, after all. Ten thousand Gold Coins is just a drop in the bucket. I need to adjust my mindset, and fast!’
"That’s enough of that. Stand over here. It’s time to depart."
Hearing this, Smith and the still-conflicted-looking Lorna moved to stand behind Isaac.
Once the two were in position, faint ripples in Space appeared behind the trio, slowly swallowing them whole.
Phase Space - Phase Transfer!
Countless lights and shadows flashed before their eyes. When their vision returned, the trio had already left the Terra Empire and arrived at the gates of the Itra Royal City.
"Let’s go. First, we find a place to stay, then we’ll go meet a couple of acquaintances." Isaac glanced inside the Royal City, one eyebrow slightly raised, before leading Smith and an astonished Lorna through the gates.
Trailing behind Isaac, Lorna looked around with curiosity. She had never been to a city this big before. ’So this is the Royal City of a Kingdom?’
’Amazing!’
In truth, Lorna wasn’t just curious about the Royal City; she was also incredibly curious about Isaac’s Space Magic. Though she didn’t know the distance between the Itra Kingdom and the Terra Empire, she knew from her years of wandering that traveling from one country to another was always a very long journey!
’And yet, he performed a long-distance Spatial Movement while carrying two people, all without breaking a sweat or looking winded. This is no ordinary Space Magic!’
Besides the Magic, Lorna was also curious about the "acquaintances" Isaac mentioned. He’d used that word, but his tone held a hint of amusement, suggesting they weren’t the sort of acquaintances she was imagining.
But although she was curious about everything, Lorna didn’t ask. She was too shy.
And so, after showing the gate guards his Noble Medal and the Magic Book from the Flesh Sect, Isaac led Smith and Lorna to an inn without any trouble.
A rather special inn—the Terra Cottage.
Only after Isaac had formally checked in did the person who had been secretly watching them since they entered the city finally depart.
"It seems... they’ve left?" Lorna said, somewhat uncertainly.
It wasn’t that her senses were poor; she just didn’t understand. The person had clearly been tailing them in secret since they entered the city, so why would they suddenly vanish now?
It didn’t make sense. ’Did we do something to make that person feel at ease?’
"Yep, gone." Isaac smiled, holding up three room keys and giving them a little jiggle.
