Chapter 13: Chapter 11: Trading Market, Barter
The door to Dorm 603 was closed. On the floor lay Du Ming, who had passed out after getting his balls crushed, and his underlings, who had been beaten to the ground.
Most of the student onlookers had already dispersed, their faces showing either shock or fear.
But a few people remained standing by the corridor, their expressions intriguing...
Others might not have understood the intricacies of what just happened, but they did.
Du Ming had made such a huge scene for no other reason than to make an example of the people in Dorm 603 and establish his dominance.
Who knew that instead of establishing his own dominance, he would end up cementing his opponent’s reputation.
It had the complete opposite effect.
"Boss, since when did Dorm 603 have such a badass?" one of the students, Huang Mao, asked the young man in the lead.
The young man had a clean-cut buzz cut and rugged features. He was powerfully built, but the most noticeable thing about him was the scar at the corner of his mouth, which gave him a somewhat ferocious look.
His name was Zhang Meng, a member of the Fighting Club and also a student living on the sixth floor of this building.
Like Chen Chong, he hadn’t agreed to Du Ming’s plan.
But because he could fight and all his dorm mates were also members of the Fighting Club, Du Ming didn’t dare to mess with him. That’s why he had turned his attention to Chen Chong.
"A character summoned from a Recruitment Card?"
He guessed Wang Biao’s origin in a single glance. Clearly, he also knew about the existence of Recruitment Cards.
"Is it the same kind of Card our club president found today?" another young man asked curiously.
"I think so. I saw it with my own eyes. The president summoned someone from that card, but compared to the one from Dorm 603, the difference between the two is like night and day," another young man chimed in.
Zhang Meng spoke up, "The president’s Card was only D-Class. With that kind of combat power, I’d say the Recruitment Card from Dorm 603 is at least C-Class to start. Looks like I’ll have to find some time to get to know the guys from 603."
Huang Mao said, "Yeah! And since our club is already at odds with the Student Council, and the guys from 603 just beat up the Student Council’s Du Ming, if we pull him over to our side, wouldn’t that boost our combat strength?"
Zhang Meng smiled. "Exactly. Our club is bound to clash with the Student Council crowd sooner or later. It would be best if people like those in Dorm 603 could join us. Even if they don’t, we need to get on good terms with them..."
...
「Inside the dorm.」
"Holy shit, Brother Biao, you’re a beast! One against ten, just like in the movies!"
Xu Jun had become a total fanboy of Wang Biao, his face full of adoration.
Wang Biao laughed heartily. "You’re exaggerating, Brother Xu Jun! You want to learn? I can teach you!"
"Yeah, yeah!" Xu Jun nodded frantically, already imagining himself taking on ten guys at once.
Chen Chong, in contrast, wasn’t as excited.
He was already mentally prepared for Wang Biao’s combat prowess, so he wasn’t too shocked.
It was Du Ming, on the other hand...
’As a member of the Student Council, after getting beaten so badly today, he probably won’t let this go easily.’
’He’ll probably stir up a lot of trouble for a while.’
But Chen Chong wasn’t scared in the slightest.
’In times like these, you have to be ruthless to survive. If you show any weakness, you’ll just end up being bullied constantly.’
Chen Chong even began to reflect on his own actions.
’Since I already made a move, why not go all the way? Maybe it would have been better to just kill them all?’
’It’s probably because I just transmigrated. My moral compass isn’t pointing low enough yet. I’ll have to change that in the future.’
’Sometimes, being a little more heartless can prevent a lot more trouble down the line.’
’If Du Ming and the Student Council don’t do anything after this, then fine. But if they dare to come looking for revenge, it won’t be as simple as just crushing their balls...’
"I think I heard earlier that a bunch of students set up a trading market over at the Central Square, right?"
Chen Chong looked at Xu Jun.
"I think so. What’s up, Brother Chong? You want to go check it out?"
"Of course!" Chen Chong nodded.
"Alright, then I’m going too!" Xu Jun hopped off his bed.
The three of them closed the dorm room door and headed downstairs.
Because of what had just happened in the hallway, many students now knew that Chen Chong from Dorm 603 had a formidable subordinate.
The news hadn’t just spread on the sixth floor; almost half the dorm building had heard about it.
And they weren’t idiots. They knew there was no one at school that good at fighting. Plus, the news that someone had found a Card that could recruit characters had also spread throughout the campus today.
Many people were guessing that the burly man following Chen Chong and the others was most likely recruited.
These students could only feel envy and jealousy toward Chen Chong’s good fortune.
Their gazes toward him were now tinged with a bit of awe...
Soon, the three of them crossed most of the campus and arrived at the Central Square.
The walk took a good twenty minutes, prompting Xu Jun to complain more than once about how far the dorm building was from the school gate.
A round trip would take forty minutes in total.
If they had to do this every day, it would be unbearable.
Chen Chong felt the same way. ’The school really is too big. This daily commute is such a waste of time. Should I consider moving somewhere else?’
"Brother Chong, there are actually a ton of students setting up stalls here!" Xu Jun’s voice pulled Chen Chong from his thoughts.
Looking ahead, he saw that the Central Square, which had been empty of stalls this morning, was now packed with people.
There were several hundred of them!
Besides the students walking back and forth, many others were squatting in various spots around the square, having found a random place to lay out their wares.
A quick glance revealed a bit of everything.
There were clothes, medicine, spices, snacks, and even luxury items like pots, pans, handbags, and watches.
A commotion at a nearby stall caught Chen Chong’s attention.
"Please, trade with me! These are all designer brands and the latest model phone I spent tens of thousands on. I’m selling them at a bone-breaking discount now. Just ten bags of bread or five packs of instant noodles for one!"
A girl with a good figure and pretty face was squatting there speaking. But in contrast to her appearance, the hunger on her face was plain to see.
In front of her were four or five commonly seen handbags.
Before, buying one would have cost at least a five-figure sum.
Besides those, there was also the latest model "Fruit" phone, a gold necklace, a ladies’ watch, and some cosmetics.
"Trade my ass! We’ve transmigrated! What’s the use of buying this stuff? To show off to the monkeys in the woods outside?"
The guy she had grabbed was blunt, retorting directly.
The girl wouldn’t give up and continued to plead, "You could trade for it and give it to a girl you like! You know girls love this stuff the most."
The guy scoffed, "Give it to a girl I like? You really don’t get the situation, do you? Instead of giving her this useless junk, I’d have a better chance of winning her over by giving her a bag of food. Besides, over by the academic building, some girls are already naming their price. Two packs of instant noodles or food of equivalent value can get you a ’turn’ with them. You can keep this trash for yourself."
After saying his piece, he walked away, leaving the girl staring blankly into space. A moment later, her eyes turned red, and she buried her head and began to sob.
It was impossible to know if she was despairing over the world as it was now, or if she regretted spending a fortune on these material possessions instead of buying more food...
Watching this scene, Chen Chong slowly shook his head. This was the cruelty that came with transmigration.
Designer brands, gold, precious watches—none of it was as real as a bite of food.
It was only the second day, and many people still hadn’t truly realized it.
The further along they got, the more obvious the importance of food would become.
Scenes like this were happening all over the Central Square...
