Chapter 190: Preparing For The Summit
The results of the interview were as expected and the only ones who passed were Dan, Liliac and Valletta.
They were told they were accepted through a phone call and instructed to prepare to pack what they needed to move to live on the island.
I was worried that this would be a problem for Dan but it seems like he had already talked to his family about it.
He was prepared to be away for the weekdays and return during the weekend to his family which seemed to be an arrangement that Olivia was fine with.
She had told me that she had already intended for the Guardians to be working in shifts and after this Guardian interview, they would start recruiting other people for auxiliary personnel anyway so the Guardians should have more free time.
Those guys who had failed the Guardian test could apply for this and if they do well, they might even get a chance to apply to be a Guardian later as well so we already have a shortlist of people to hire for this.
Unfortunately, my Guardians wouldn’t have much time to rest for now as the summit for the Mortal Gods of the South Asian Conglomerate would be happening soon.
Which means all of my Guardians would also be accompanying me there as well.
On paper, it’s supposed to be an event where the leaders of this region convene with the Mortal Gods to strengthen our ties and alliances and to foster friendship and cooperation.
In reality, it really is just a dick measuring contest between all the countries and the two countries with the Mortal Gods have been lording over the other countries within this alliance for the past few years.
No doubt, the fact that I had been newly awakened as a Singaporean Mortal God was something that neither of those countries had prepared for.
I’m already expecting them to try and probe me with questions or send their Mortal Gods to make contact with me to see what my plans are for the region.
Malaysia had already tried to do so by sending one of their Guardians to meet with me earlier while Indonesia seems to be content with keeping to themselves for now.
At least we still had a few more days before we had to set off so all of us could get our things in order first since the trip would take at least a few days to a week.
In the meantime, Olivia was letting the Bunarfs do the recruiting for the auxiliary team since they would be the ones working together with them the most.
I believe our intention was to have the Bunarfs act as the heads of the support teams on the island or something along those lines at least.
Since the support team would not be working directly with me, I let them handle it and took the chance to go back home since I haven’t seen my family for a while now.
I told my Guardians about my plans and teleported myself back to my home.
This time, instead of teleporting to the park, I teleported directly into my home instead.
As expected, when I stepped out through the door, I found my family sitting at the dining table in the middle of lunch, all of them looking flabbergasted at me when I appeared.
The door behind me dematerialised and I gave them a wave, "I’m home."
My sister immediately jumped out of her seat to point at me, "Gor Gor?!! What was that?! Since when could you make an anywhere door?! That’s so cool!!"
I rolled my eyes, "It’s not me. We have someone on the team who can make these teleportation doors and I’m coming back for a few days because we will be leaving the country soon."
My mother frowned, "Ha? Again? You just come back only you going somewhere else again?"
My sister tried to jump at me so I dodged her and let her crash onto the sofa behind me, ignoring her cries of protest to address my mother.
"Yeah... There’s a Mortal God summit happening in Sydney and we have to accompany our Mortal God there to meet with the other Mortal Gods of the region. So we’ll be flying off in a few days."
My sister gasped from behind me, "Whaaaat?! Sydney?! Take me with you, Gor Gor!!"
I huffed at her, "I’m going to work, not to play."
"Aiyah!! Just bring me with you and I can go and play by myself! You can go work all you want!"
Thankfully, my father came to my rescue, "Absolutely not. You are not going there on your own."
"But I’ll be with Gor Gor!! I’m not alone!"
"Ah Qing will be busy working and you’ll be wandering around alone. What if something happens to you?"
"I can handle myself lah!!"
I reached out and patted her on the head, "Next time ok? We’re still busy now but I think after we return, we should have some time off. We can go on a trip or something."
"Waahhh! Really?! You say one ah, Gor Gor!! Say already cannot bluff hor!"
"Sure, sure..."
Mother waved at me, "Haiyah, don’t talk so much. You eat already or not? Haven’t then hurry up and come sit down."
Well... I’m not that hungry but it has been a while since I’ve met my family so I might as well just join them.
I sat down at my usual seat beside my sister’s and mother placed a bowl of rice in front of me alongside a pair of chopsticks.
"So how are things with work?" My father asked.
I took a bite of the rice, "It’s quite busy right now since everything’s still being set up. But we’re going to be recruiting new people soon so things should get better. Right now we’re still expanding on our manpower."
My sister perked up, "Oh yeah! You guys are looking for support staff to live on the island, right?"
I raised an eyebrow at her, "How do you know?"
"They were talking about it on the news and there were some people on the internet talking about how unfair it was that you guys were only looking for other worlders and not locals."
"Hmm? I don’t believe that’s true? Last I heard they were not restricting who they are recruiting for the support staff. It’s just that the requirement is that they have to live on the island which would be rather difficult for the locals to accept so we’re most likely going to be getting other worlders as applicants instead."
She swivelled her head to me, "Eh?! That means as long as someone is willing to live on the island, they can apply too?"
"Err... That should be the case, yes."
Mother gave me a look, "What about your colleagues? Are they bullying you?"
I snorted, "Mother... I’m not young anymore you know? And it’s not some place with kids... No one’s bullying anyone..."
"Hmph... Even in the workplace, there are also bad people who would bully other people, you know?"
"Well, I can assure you that there isn’t anyone like that on the team so you don’t have to worry."
"When do you ever make me stop worrying about you? Tell you don’t do this dangerous job and go be doctor you also don’t want?"
I sighed, "Come on, mother... I think we’re already past that at this stage, don’t you think?"
Father backed me up, "That’s right. Just let him do what he wants. He’s already a grown man now. Once he finds a partner, he would also be taking care of his family."
Oof... Let’s err... Not think about the fact that I was currently sleeping with two girls right now...
Mother gave me a look, "So got any girls that you are interested in there? If have, bring her home and let us take a look at her."
I tried to shovel more rice into my mouth to avoid answering and just gave my mother a curt nod instead.
Thankfully, my sister changed the topic and asked, "How long will you be going to Australia, Gor Gor?"
"Mmm... A few days to a week was what I was told. We’ll be catching a flight there in four days so I’ll stay here for two days before going back."
"Ehhh... So fast... At least go out with me tomorrow leh, Gor Gor."
"Where are you going tomorrow?"
"I dunno. You just never come back for so long liao so I want you to treat me to something!"
I sighed, "Yeah, sure... Let’s go out somewhere tomorrow then..."
"Yayyyy! Gor Gor treating me!"
At least I already got my pay for being the Mortal God this month so I could at least take her out somewhere I guess...
Funny how despite being a Mortal God, I’m still subjected to the limitations of capitalism...
Then again... I wasn’t going out as the Mortal God anyway...
Oh well.... Just for tomorrow, I’ll have to pamper my little sister a little.
