Chapter 115: Chapter 115
Inside the master bedroom, Elise had just sat down on the sofa when the door was pushed open.
She paused mid-action as she reached for her book, lifting her gaze with annoyance. Dylan walked in, his dark eyes fixed intently on her.
Elise’s expression remained perfectly flat. "Is something the matter?"
"Why did you agree to let Fleur stay?"
"You were right there. Robin wanted her to stay."
Dylan was not satisfied with this answer. Or rather, he didn’t believe it for a second. He felt that Elise was acting entirely too out of character, and this anomaly stirred a strange, inexplicable sense of unease in his chest.
"Elise, I’ve told you before, this is our marital home. Even if Robin asked, I wouldn’t have given in and let my sister-in-law move here. You really didn’t need to go this far."
Listening to him, Elise’s lips curved into a faint smile. She looked Dylan in the eyes and countered, "When I tried to drive her away, you weren’t satisfied. Now that I’m letting her stay, you’re still not satisfied. Dylan, don’t you think you’re being incredibly contradictory?"
Dylan frowned, finding himself speechless.
Elise leaned back against the sofa, her beautiful eyes still locked onto him. A mocking slant touched the corners of her mouth as she said in a casual, detached tone, "If you don’t like having your sister-in-law stay here, you are perfectly free to go downstairs and tell her that yourself."
In the end, Dylan failed to get a satisfying answer from her. He stared at Elise in silence for a moment, ultimately saying nothing as he turned and left the room.
The moment the door clicked shut, the slight smile on Elise’s lips instantly vanished.
She knew Dylan wouldn’t actually kick Fleur out. The only reason he had rushed up here to question her was because he suspected she had an ulterior motive for letting Fleur stay. To put it plainly, he was still worried she might make things difficult for Fleur.
But whatever Dylan thought didn’t matter. So far, everything was playing out exactly as she had anticipated.
It won’t be long now, she thought.
Shifting her focus, Elise unlocked her phone, pulled up her contacts, and dialed Sandra.
"Sandy, I reviewed the email you just sent. There are a few details regarding the samples for the new seasonal jewelry line that I think we need to revise..."
Elise spent the entire morning in her room. After wrapping up company business, she leaned against the sofa and read for a while.
Around noon, Robin came upstairs to call her down for lunch.
When Elise followed Robin downstairs, Fleur and Dylan were already seated at the dining table. They sat opposite each other, with an empty chair left beside each of them.
Seeing Elise, Fleur immediately stood up with a warm smile. "Elise, come over and sit! Mrs. Lander made all your favorite dishes for lunch."
Elise glanced briefly at the lavish spread on the table. Indeed, every single dish was a favorite of hers, arranged in Mrs. Lander’s signature presentation style.
"Alright, everyone, please sit."
Hearing this, Fleur glanced at Dylan. "See, Dylan? I told you Elise wasn’t angry, but you just wouldn’t believe me!"
Dylan looked at Elise with a slightly unnatural expression, clearing his throat. "Fleur, I know Elise isn’t angry."
"I told you long ago that Elise is a wonderful person. You’re just too cold and terribly blunt! Look at how sweet Robin is, no wonder Elise dotes on him so much!" Fleur beamed with joy, then turned to Robin. "Robin, don’t you think Mommy is right?"
Robin scrambled into the seat next to Fleur, nodding cheerfully. "Yes, yes! Godmother is actually super gentle and sweet. Daddy, you always say Godmother has a bad temper, but is it possible that you just don’t know how to make her happy?"
Dylan stared at him in utter disbelief.
With the mother and son playing off each other like a rehearsed duo, even the usually stoic and commanding Dylan couldn’t help but look a bit embarrassed.
In contrast, Elise, the actual subject of their conversation, remained completely indifferent throughout. She pulled out a chair and sat down on her own accord. Instead of taking the seat next to Dylan, she chose a chair right in the middle, keeping her distance from everyone.
Dylan glanced at her, his brow furrowing.
Fleur ladled a bowl of soup, placing it gently in front of Elise. "Elise, Mrs. Lander mentioned you love this soup. It’s my first time making it, so tell me how it tastes. If you like it, I’ll cook it for you often."
Elise offered a quiet "thank you" and took a sip with her spoon. The taste was practically identical to the housekeeper’s version.
"How is it?" Fleur looked at her with bated breath. "Does it taste good?"
"It’s good," Elise said, setting down her spoon and looking at Fleur. "You should sit down and eat too."
"I’m so relieved you like it!" Fleur smiled broadly, proceeding to ladle three more bowls—one for Dylan, one for Robin, and finally one for herself.
She sat down and stroked Robin’s hair. "Robin, your godmother is so good to us. When you grow up, you must be very filial to her, understand?"
Robin nodded vigorously while slurping his soup. "Don’t worry, Mommy! When I grow up, I’ll work hard to make lots of money and be just as amazing as Daddy. Then I’ll take great care of both you and Godmother!"
Fleur laughed and looked across at Dylan. "Dylan, look how sensible Robin is."
Dylan looked at the boy, a warm smile finally touching his dark eyes.
For the rest of the meal, Fleur acted very much like the hostess of the house. One moment she was urging Elise to eat more, the next she was reminding Dylan to scoop food or peel shrimp for Elise, all while seamlessly looking after Robin. From beginning to end, she was the epitome of grace and virtue—a complete transformation compared to her behavior a week ago.
Elise remained mostly silent throughout, offering only polite, brief responses whenever Fleur tried to engage her in conversation. To an outsider, it would have looked as though Elise was the guest and Fleur was the warm, hospitable homeowner.
But the subtle, underlying tension of the atmosphere was something only Elise and Mrs. Lander could sense. Neither Dylan nor Robin felt anything amiss. Robin was too young to understand, but Dylan?
Clearly, Dylan approved of Fleur’s behavior.
Elise observed it all, remaining perfectly calm and collected. After all, she had foreseen this. There was nothing worth getting upset over.
After lunch, Elise went upstairs for a nap. By the time she woke up, the sky had already turned dark.
She washed her face and headed downstairs. The living room was quiet. Mrs. Lander came forward to meet her, looking at her with a rather complex expression.
Sensing something was off, Elise knit her brows together. "Did they leave?"
"No, they haven’t left. Early this afternoon, the eldest young mistress suddenly suggested going to the mall, saying she wanted to buy some clothes for the baby in your belly. Robin and the master went along with her."
Just as she finished speaking, the sound of a car pulling into the courtyard echoed from outside.
A flicker of impatience crossed Elise’s eyes. She turned to Mrs. Lander and said, "I see. You can go back to what you were doing."
"Alright, I’ll go get dinner ready," the woman sighed softly, turning toward the kitchen. It broke her heart just watching this situation play out as an outsider. Elise was pregnant, after all! But as a servant, she didn’t dare say too much.
The front door opened, and Robin was the first to bounce into the house.
"Godmother!" He ran straight to Elise, his small face flushed with excitement. "Mommy, Daddy, and I went to the mall this afternoon! We picked out so many clothes for the baby in your tummy!"
Right behind him, Fleur entered the villa, carrying two large shopping bags as she walked into the living area.
"Elise, come take a look. Do you like these clothes?"
Elise cast a detached glance over the shopping bags. Fleur sat down right next to her, pulling out two sets of baby clothes—one blue, one pink.
"Since we don’t know the baby’s gender yet, Dylan and I thought it’d be best to buy some for both a boy and a girl. Rest assured, you two will definitely have a second child down the line anyway, so they’ll get used to it sooner or later."
Elise didn’t comment, her hand resting silently over her stomach.
Fleur continued to arrange the baby clothes, chattering away continuously.
"Oh, by the way, Dylan just dropped us off and had to rush out for a business dinner, so he won’t be eating at home tonight. I made sure to remind him not to drink any alcohol, considering we have a pregnant woman in our house!"
