Chapter 105: Following the doctor
"We’re here to see Doctor Ro."
Michael observed quietly from behind Alyssa when the name ’Ro’ reached his ear.
It might’ve just been the alias people knew him as, because who the hell would name their kid ’Ro’?
"Do you have an appointment?" The lady behind the desk asked with a lazy tone that matched the lady’s expression on her face and dark eyebags underneath her eyes. It was as if she was being forced to live.
"Yes." She said and then someone asked from the side.
"Are you the one who doesn’t know how to keep to time?" They both turned to find a man in a white lab coat, rolled up sleeves, a cup of cold coffee in one hand and the other in his pocket.
Just like the receptionist, he looked like he was living a life he never asked to live.
He had dark eyebags and an exhausted expression on his face, with his dirty-blond hair tied at the back.
"Ah, that would be us." Alyssa said, her guard up and they watched him sip the coffee in his hand.
"You’re awfully late." He said and then turned around. "But since I’m getting paid extra, I won’t complain. Follow me."
"Are you Doctor Ro?" Alyssa asked before they followed him.
"You don’t see anyone else going by that name now, do you?" He asked as he sipped his coffee again, but they did not respond, so he took their silence as a no.
He sighed. He looked like someone who very much j hated his job and it made Alyssa wonder if it was really a good idea to hand the testing over to someone like that.
’No, I shouldn’t doubt. My boss made this appointment so I’m sure he took measures to make sure this was a good idea.’ she thought. ’But still, something about him feels sketchy.’
"If you’re ready, just come with me. My office is at the end of this hallway. And if you’re scared, you can go back the way you came." He took his hand out of his pocket and waved it. "I’ll still be getting paid either way so I have nothing to lose."
Alyssa gulped and decided to trust that this man wouldn’t at least plant an ambush on them. He didn’t know who they were to begin with so he wouldn’t do such a thing.
But in case, she’d have to be prepared.
While she was still thinking of all this, Michael walked past her, shocking her.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Following the doctor." Michael said, still walking ahead and she followed. "Isn’t that what we’re here to do? To see the doctor?"
"Yes, but..."
"Don’t worry, Alyssa." He said. "I have good senses." He added and glanced away, smiling awkwardly. ’Most times.’
"Yes, Mister Mi--" she was almost about to slip up and call him by his real name when she immediately diverted it to his alias. "Matthew. Yes, mister Matthew."
Michael glanced back at her. He could tell she was nervous.
’Aren’t I supposed to be the one nervous?’ he thought, chuckling to himself. ’I guess watching her made me less nervous. Now, let’s face the battle in front.’
Alyssa was a petite Omega with red short curly hair and a vibrant personality. She was always so dedicated to whatever she was doing.
From a young age, she had trained to be in the frontlines of the pack but her brilliance caught Sebastian’s eye. So instead of leaving her to train and only end up sacrificing herself in the frontlines, he took her in and trained her under him, to not belong to the pack but to belong to the master he served.
For the first task that she was ever assigned to, she was determined to do her best and not disappoint her boss.
So, she was being extra cautious and completely vigilant.
She had heightened senses that were far superior to her peers. So, the moment she noticed something was off, she would take Michael and run away from there.
"So, you’re here for a pregnancy test, right?" Doctor Ro asked as he sat on his chair, placing down his nearly empty cup of coffee, and then picked up a pen.
"Yes," Michael answered.
"Alright then. No big deal there." He wrote something down and then hot down, drawing the curtain at the side to expose a scanning machine as well as a bed. "No need to do several tests. We’ll know from a scan if you’re pregnant or not. And as for how long..." He darted his eyes away in thought and then looked back at them. "I’m sure I can guess from the size of the fetus."
Alyssa was dumbstruck. She couldn’t believe that he was planning to do such shabby work.
He was simply going to do a scan and not a test? He’d guess how old the fetus was? Just what the hell did he think he was doing?
He was treating someone else’s affair too lightly. Was he in his right mind? And to think they were going to pay him.
"It seems this was a waste of time." She said as she stood up and his lazy eyes followed her. "How can you call this a test? You’re getting paid to carry out a proper test and not some half-assed guessing? That’s so unprofessional."
"Then what will you have me do?" Doctor Ro asked as he let go of the curtain and folded his arms. "The kind of test you’re asking for takes over thirty minutes at least and I don’t have that kind of time. You’re the one who came late and I have something else going on in a few minutes. I’m just doing this to her it over with."
"But still..."
"You just need to know if he’s pregnant or not, right?" Doctor Ro asked and then unfolded his arms, rubbing the back of his neck. "So, what’s the big deal? The scan will show if he’s pregnant or not."
