Chapter 326: The World is Healing?
Valerie groaned softly as she stirred back to consciousness. Her eyes shifting behind her eyelids as her mind tried to process everything that occurred, before she was slapped hard on the forehead.
"Ah! What the hell was that for?!" She shouted, clutching at her forehead as she shot up, before stopping as a jolt of pain exploded through her stomach, causing her to clutch at that and groan again.
She peeled open her eyes and glared at Jason, who was crouched next to her with an irritating smirk on his face.
"What? I was waking you up. What’s wrong with that?"
"I was already awake you ass."
"Yeah, because of me. You’re welcome." He laughed, reaching over to slap her forehead again, before Valerie smacked his hand away.
They slapped at each others hands, getting into a very brief slap fight, before Jason fell backward and broke out into laughter.
He rolled over, clambering to his feet as he brushed himself off.
"Come on, We’ve still got something else to take care of. Not done here just yet."
Valerie clutched at her two painful spots as she muttered to herself,
"Well If I am going anywhere then I’ll need my..." She started to say, before something nudged against her leg.
Beans was sitting next to her, holding her cane in her mouth as he pressed one of his adorable little feet against her leg. Valerie smiled at him, taking the cane from his mouth and giving him some much deserved nuzzles, both for helping her and for his amazing efforts, before scooping him up and clambering to her feet.
She glanced at where the abomination had been, but there was really nothing to see. All that had been left after her Divine Furnace had done its work, was a soot filled crater in the ground. The furnace had reduced the creature to ashes, and even melted the stone it was standing on before turning those to ash too.
However there was some trace of its presence, as at the base of the crater there was the design of a rune of fire outlined by the ash.
It was a shame they had to do that. It would have been nice to get some of its bones or skin for material purposes, but maybe there was something else sitting around that she could harvest. After all, organics was one of the few things that she couldn’t transfer between worlds.
The three of them made their way down to the centre of the quarry the slow and methodical way. At least the silly bipeds did, Beans had no trouble gliding around on his wings and often spent his time doing loops and flips in the air as he waited for them to catch up, but whether on feet or wings they eventually made it down to the base where the rest of the party was gathered.
Their interest was gathered around the disgusting, yet strange grass that filled the area. Trivian was walking through the grass, his eyes closed and hands outstretched, as a type of green dust sprinkled from his hands.
Wherever the dust touched, the colouration of the grass changed, as the purple retreated as green forced its way onto the foliage like an infection. The purple colouration fought against it, trying to reclaim the area that was stolen by the natural green, but more dust forced them into a gradual retreat as Trivian cured the grass of the poison infecting it.
The more the green spread, the more of the poisonous dew drops lingering on or hanging off of the grass blades started to change into crystal clear water.
However, it was a painfully slow process, as Trivian had barely converted a tenth of the grass back to its natural lustre.
Ren had taken a special interest in the twisted black trees with the absolutely rancid, rotten flesh fruit that smelled a thousand times worse up close. So it was no wonder he liked it, it smelled just like him.
She was joking, of course. Although maybe not entirely on that one.
Still, Valerie wasn’t entirely sure what Ren was doing, as he was feeding his strange magic into the tree and studying it with his eyes closed, but she didn’t question it. Despite everything, and especially despite his creepy and stalkerish start, she was actually starting to trust him.
Ugh, that was a disturbing thought.
When it came to the final members of their party, Lucy and Elise, they stood together at the centre of the field of grass.
Elise had her book open, flipping through the pages and occasionally making a few gestures to the empty air. All the while her face was scrunched up with a mix of concentration and confusion, that made Valerie briefly consider that she might be doing maths.
That was the face that she always made whenever she had to do it. Especially quadratic equations and wave functions. Horrible stuff. She would rather fight another one of those abomination than go back to her maths class.
Lucy was standing beside Elise, her armour still fully equipped, as she held an Aura formed two handed axe and let it rest on her shoulder, ready to swing.
Valerie didn’t have a chance to wonder why, before the air between the two women shimmered and warped. A lizard’s head, covered in shiny red scales and with three horns like a triceratops, poked its head out of thin air before it slithered out of nowhere and into the real world.
Its eyes darted around curiously before freezing in place as Lucy’s axe cleaved through its neck like butter.
The lizard slumped to the ground, its head and body completely separate, as Lucy plucked both of them off the ground and tossed them clear of the grass. An action that served a greater purpose, as the grass eagerly absorbed the blood that had spilled and sucked every last drop into the soil below.
At the same time, on one of the trees that Ren was studying with his strange magic, a new flower suddenly sprouted from its twisted, gnarled finger looking branches, and the beginnings of a new putrid fruit started to form within the bud of that flower.
