Chapter 38: The Sin of Space

Sin...

What is sin exactly?

The ’Sin’ could be considered similar to a ’rune’, a mark that granted Alden unique control over the element of ’Space’. Yet, he knew nothing about its true origin, as even the system lacked proper information regarding it.

The ’Sin’ of ’Space’ gave him a new, rare ability. But as the name ’Sin’ suggested a ’wrong-doing’, it implied a hidden restriction or an underlying problem attached to the power. Free power never came without trouble, at least not for Alden.

Throughout all of Elderia, no public information existed about this phenomenon. No one in the world knew what a ’Sin’ was, what it could do, or what its true purpose entailed. Even searching through the original Alden’s memories yielded no results. It was an unknown variable.

What actually mattered was whether this ’Sin’ would make him walk a right path or a wrong path. Alden did not know the answer to that, but whatever happened, he would have to bear this mark for the rest of his life.

The ’Sin’ was bound to bring new trouble into his already troublesome life. In a way, his very existence was a ’Sin’ against this world, as he was a transmigrator who appeared out of nowhere. Whatever challenges he might face next would depend entirely on his unpredictable fate and his overpowered luck.

...

Inside the border city of Beastriheim, Thalvor, evening fell. The academy students engaged with their assigned teams, spending time together to build rapport.

Today, they were instructed to start basic training with their groups so they would be ready to face whatever unpredictable practical examinations the academy threw at them. They needed to clear the exams without fighting among themselves. Building companionship was necessary to ensure no commotion happened during the tests.

But there was also another practical reason they had to stay in this border city for the night.

Their primary destination was a famous location known as ’Wynthalor’, one of the most prominent cities in Beastriheim. They needed to travel there using a massive teleportation gate. However, charging a teleportation gate enough to safely transport thousands of students required a specific amount of time. Thanks to the highly developed magical technology in this era, a charging process that physically should have taken weeks or months could now be done in just a single day.

As evening arrived, students strolled around the city streets to find suitable restaurants to eat. Since the academy did not bring them here for a trip, the students had to handle their own stomachs. Different people had different tastes, so it was best to give them the freedom to choose what they wanted to eat.

The sun set, and the bright moon became clearly visible in the night sky.

The city market bustled with activity. Swarms of people moved from place to place, and the atmosphere felt lively. Streetlights illuminated the busy roads, casting a warm glow over the crowds.

In stark contrast to this lively scene, a dark alleyway sat hidden in the shadows.

A boy with brownish hair and brownish eyes stumbled backward. His foot mistakenly kicked a roadside dustbin, making a loud clatter and sending garbage sprawling across the street.

He didn’t even notice the mess he made. He just kept backing away in pure terror until he stumbled and hit the wall behind him.

He realized there was no place left to run. His eyes shook with fear, and his body trembled as the air turned freezing cold. His terrified gaze caught a figure stepping into the dark alley, her face revealed as the distant streetlight illuminated her features.

Silver hair cascaded down her back. Her usually calm lavender eyes were now as sharp as a knife, and the surrounding temperature dropped even further with every step she took.

Sion felt a sharp chill run down his spine. He couldn’t even meet her cold, piercing eyes.

"Your highness, how may I help you... Did you need something from me?"

His voice shook as he tried to look around for any possible escape route.

"Where is he?"

Alicia responded flatly, ignoring his formal greeting. She was not in a good mood. The precious time she should have spent with Alden today had been ruined, and her patience was gone.

Sion’s eyes widened in terror. He started to talk hastily, waving his hands.

"Who is he? No, I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t know anyone! I think you have mistaken me for someone else, haha—"

He tried to shake off her direct question, but to his dread, Alicia did not pause. She stepped closer.

Frost started to swirl around her open palm. The ice took shape, manifesting into a sharp, jagged dagger of solid ice right in her grasp.

"I will not ask again. Where is Alden?!"

Sion’s face paled at her words. His blood ran cold as he finally realized exactly who she was asking about.

"I—I—I don’t know! How would I know? Maybe you have made a mistake..."

Alicia’s eyes narrowed. She checked the sharpness of her ice dagger by pressing the blade against her own finger. A small drop of red blood flowed from her skin. Seeing her willingly cut herself without flinching made Sion feel even more terrified.

"The blue sheet. I was the one who gave it to him... But you have it now. That means you must know where he is. Do not lie to me. I will not hesitate to kill you right here. If you have even a little bit of knowledge about the social circles, then you already know my reputation. I never take my words back once I commit to them."

She looked at him. Her eyes were intense, filled with an unfathomable coldness.

"So don’t you dare lie to me. Spill it out. Where is he?"

Sion’s knees grew weak, and he dropped to the ground. He looked down at the dirty alley floor, bracing himself for whatever he might face after telling her the truth.

"I—I pushed him into the sea while we were traveling on the train..."

Alicia looked at the boy sprawling on the ground. Her hand started to shake. A thick layer of frost started to cover her arm, and the ground beneath her feet quickly froze over, the ice expanding outward across the alley.

The ice shard in her hand became even sharper than it already was. Her eyes stared down at his trembling figure with pure, unfiltered intent to kill.

The boy dropped his head to the frozen ground, crying out an apology.

"I am sorry! I just... I—It was just to help! I did everything so that you and Young Master Kaelian could be together again!"

Alicia narrowed her eyes as the deadly coldness intensified. She raised the ice shard and slashed forward toward his neck, ready to execute him on the spot.
