Chapter 260: Chapter: 259 Arrogence can get you killed.[3]

"It’s a Light Path spell..."

Kavin thought out loud as he stared at Donaven. If any bystander somehow heard his thoughts, they would probably say: took you long enough.

Still, after watching the giant repeatedly dissolve into particles of light and reappear somewhere else entirely, Kavin finally understood what he was dealing with.

The guy had learned a new spell after completing his first trial.

There was no other explanation. Kavin had done his research before this match. He knew Donaven’s previous fights, knew his habits, knew the techniques he liked to use, and nowhere in any of that information had there been mention of a spell that allowed him to turn into light.

If Donaven had possessed something this ridiculous before entering the trial, it would have been impossible to hide. Which meant this was something new.

Something he had created after the first trial. And most importantly, it was a literal cheat code.

’How the fuck did he even come up with that?’

Kavin found himself genuinely amazed. It wasn’t merely the strength of the spell that impressed him.

Powerful techniques existed everywhere. The astonishing part was the fact that Donaven had actually created it.

Creating a spell wasn’t simple.

To create a spell, one first needed to understand the Path behind it. Not just understand it a little, but understand it deeply enough to shape its principles into something usable.

Take Time Leaps for example.

That spell came from Kavin’s family inheritance. His mother had explained it to him before.

Though now that he thought about it...

Which patriarch was it that created the spell? The tenth? The eleventh?

Kavin frowned as he tried to remember.

A few seconds later he gave up. ’Meh, let’s skip that part. What was I thinking about again?’

Right, spells.

Time Leaps allowed the user to manipulate the flow of time affecting their own body. Movements could become twice as fast or twice as slow. Reactions, sword swings, footwork, everything followed the same principle.

Mire of Time on the other hand was created by taking inspiration from that spell. Instead of affecting himself, Kavin affected the opponent.

The spell slowed the enemy’s body and could reduce their speed by as much as two times.

It sounded simple, but actually using it placed tremendous strain on him, especially when the target was stronger than himself. The stronger the opponent, the heavier the burden became.

Time Leaps wasn’t much better. That spell also placed significant pressure on the user.

Yet despite possessing an inheritance, despite having guidance from generations of predecessors, and despite being praised as a genius by countless people, Kavin had still needed an entire week of seclusion before successfully creating Mire of Time.

The patriarch who created Time Leaps had required similar effort. Both were considered peerless geniuses.

Which was exactly why Kavin found this situation so absurd.

Donaven was a peasant.

A giant wall of muscles that looked more likely to solve problems by punching them than by studying profound concepts.

Yet somehow that same giant peasant had created a spell that literally allowed him to turn into light.

Light.

Earlier, Kavin had wrapped his legs around the man’s neck and locked him in place.

The next moment the giant had exploded into countless particles and slipped away as though his body had simply stopped obeying common sense.

It was ridiculous. Yet ridiculous didn’t mean impossible. Every spell had a principle, every principle had a weakness, every advantage carried a price.

Just like what Gandhi said, if someone slaps you, slap him back.

Kavin paused.

Actually, Gandhi definitely hadn’t said that.

As far as common knowledge went, the old man was famous for saying something much closer to the exact opposite.

There also wasn’t any connection whatsoever between Gandhi and Light Path spells. Or spell casting. Or this battle.

There wasn’t even any context that made the comparison remotely reasonable. Yet somehow the thought still led him to the answer.

If Donaven possessed such a ridiculous power, there had to be an opposite reaction somewhere. There had to be a limitation, a condition, or a price hidden behind the spell.

Kavin’s eyes gradually lit up.

Just like what Gandhi said...Or didn’t say.

Honestly, that part wasn’t important.

What mattered was that he had somehow reached the correct destination despite taking the wrong bus.

"Hehe..."

A mean chuckle escaped his mouth. Across from him, Donaven narrowed his eyes.

"So you are like that light guy from Two Piece, huh?"

Donaven blinked.

"What Two Piece?"

"Ah, nothing," Kavin replied while casually cracking his neck. "I just have a habit of talking nonsense, you see."

The relaxed attitude immediately irritated the giant.

Kavin looked far too comfortable for someone who had been smashed through a wall moments ago.

There wasn’t even a trace of tension on his face anymore. Instead, he looked as though he had figured something out and was now having fun.

Donaven’s face twisted.

"Are you making fun of me, boy? Do you even know who I am?"

Kavin smirked. It was the sort of smirk that instantly made people want to punch him.

"I do not know," he replied while casually picking his ear, "but do tell."

The giant’s eye twitched. For a moment he looked as though he might actually explode.

Then, deciding to take the invitation seriously, he drew himself up proudly and punched the air.

BOOM!

A violent shockwave exploded outward.

The air distorted from the force alone, and a sonic boom echoed throughout the arena. Dust rose from the ground as spectators stared in awe.

An arrogant smile spread across Donaven’s face.

"Boy, it seems you are taking this lightly. But let me tell you exactly who stands before you."

His chest swelled proudly.

"I am the Mountain Crushing Twin Fist Donaven! I once crushed a mountain man, and today I shall crush you too! Prepare yourself, boy!"

The declaration thundered throughout the arena. Kavin stared at him for a few seconds.

Then he slowly withdrew his finger from his ear.

The blissful ecstasy of finally scratching that itch had improved his mood considerably.

Unfortunately, what came next was even more irritating for Donaven.

"Goodness gracious!" Kavin exclaimed as he raised his wakizashi.

"Attempting greatness, are we?." His grin widened. The space behind him suddenly rippled.

One circle appeared and another...then another.

Within seconds dozens of circles had formed behind him, creating a massive wall stretching across the arena. Every circle possessed a different color and emitted a different aura.

Weapons began emerging from them.

Swords, Spears, Axes, Daggers, Hammers.

Even nails and smaller projectiles appeared among the countless weapons suspended in the air.

Donaven’s expression changed instantly.

The arrogance and confidence disappeared. Even the color in his face seemed to fade.

Because he finally understood what Kavin was doing.

Or rather...he understood what Kavin had figured out.

The price.

Once Donaven activated his Light Path spell, he could no longer use another spell during the battle.

It was the cost required to sustain such an absurd ability. And judging by the look on Kavin’s face, the boy had figured it out completely.

Kavin’s smile widened further as he watched the giant’s complexion pale.

’So I was right.’

The thought brought an immense sense of satisfaction. The answer had been there all along.

All he had needed was a little observation, a little logic, and apparently a completely incorrect quote from Gandhi.

Then, finally finishing the sentence he had started earlier, Kavin pointed his wakizashi forward and smiled.

"Though it’s a pity..." His grin became even more obnoxious.

"It’s just an attempt."
