Chapter 214: Twins (Epilogue)
Emily was sitting on the bed, legs crossed over a rumpled quilt, scrolling idly on her phone when her water broke in a sudden, warm gush. For one stunned second, she stared at the spreading wetness soaking through her nightgown and sheets, heart pounding in disbelief—No, not yet, this is too soon—her breath freezing in her chest.
Then the first contraction hit like a freight train, sharp and relentless, ripping a raw cry from her throat that echoed off the walls. All five of her partners froze mid-motion in the bedroom, eyes snapping to her.
"Uh-oh," Reyes said softly, voice tight with sudden worry.
"Don’t say uh-oh!" Emily snapped, clutching the sheets in white-knuckled fists, her body already trembling as panic clawed up her spine. "Why would you even say that? Get it together!"
Ana was on her feet in a flash, switching instantly into doctor mode—voice steady and commanding. "Every one of you just move. Now. Clear the path to the car. Hellen, grab the hospital bag from the closet. Ivory, call the hospital and tell them we’re five minutes out. Lily, help me with her."
"I’m moving," Hellen said, voice gruff as she lunged for the bag, though her hands fumbled the zipper for a split second in her haste.
Emily slapped the mattress hard enough to sting her palm, the sharp pain a brief distraction from the building pressure low in her belly. "I swear to God, if any of you start panicking before I do, I’ll kill you myself! Just... focus!"
"That’s fair," Ivory muttered from the corner, her voice shaky but trying for calm, phone already to her ear.
Another contraction ripped through Emily, fiercer and deeper, folding her forward with a guttural cry that made her vision spot. "*Ah—! Dammit! Ana!" Her nails dug into the mattress, body arching as waves of fire radiated from her core, leaving her gasping and slick with instant sweat.
"I’m here, Em," Ana said immediately, dropping to her knees beside the bed and cupping Emily’s face with both hands, thumbs wiping at her tears. "Breathe with me—in through your nose, out slow. Good, just like that. Hold my eyes—you’re not alone in this."
"I know how to breathe," Emily hissed through clenched teeth, pain twisting her face into a grimace. "I’m the one doing all the work here while you all just stand around! It hurts so much already!"
"You’re handling it like a champ," Ana replied, her voice tightening with her own worry as she rubbed firm circles on Emily’s lower back, easing a knot of tension. "But yeah, it’s brutal—I won’t sugarcoat it."
Emily glared up at her through sweat-damp lashes, cheeks flushed beet-red, dark hair sticking to her forehead. "Don’t sound so damn calm. It’s insulting when I feel like I’m splitting in half!"
Lily hurried over with a cup of water and a damp washcloth, pressing it gently to Emily’s neck despite her thrashing. "You’re doing amazing. We’re right here—whatever you need."
Emily swept her gaze over them all, fury battling raw vulnerability in her chest. "No, I am not amazing. I’m in hell. This is worse than I imagined!"
Reyes shoved a soft blanket her way. "Here—cover up if you’re cold."
"I want you all to stop hovering like useless statues and actually help!"
That pulled a choked laugh from Hellen, low and relieved, which earned her a pillow hurled straight at her chest. It thudded harmlessly, but she winced dramatically.
"Don’t you dare laugh at me!" Emily snarled, a hysterical edge creeping into her voice even as another twinge built.
"I’m not, I swear," Hellen said quickly, hands up in surrender, though her grin lingered as she edged closer to help lift Emily.
Getting her to the car was organized chaos—Reyes and Ivory each taking an arm to support her weight as they shuffled down the stairs, their grips firm and reassuring; Hellen yelling at the driver through the open window to start the engine; Lily sliding into the back seat first, pulling Emily halfway onto her lap with the cool cloth still pressed to her skin; Ana in the front passenger seat, stopwatch app open on her phone, one hand reaching back to squeeze Emily’s knee.
The leather seats were sticky against her damp clothes; city traffic a blur of honking horns and flashing lights outside. Emily gritted her teeth through a vice-like contraction, the pain making her double over and slap Ana’s reaching arm—leaving a red mark. "You better not think of timing this like it’s one of your experiments!"
"I’m timing because you’re in active labour—we need the data to prep the team," Ana said evenly, checking her pulse with practiced fingers. "Two-fifty apart now. Hang on, we’re almost there."
"You’re still annoying me."
"I know. Breathe through it."
"I hate you right now."
Ana glanced back with a soft look. "You don’t. But you’re allowed to."
Tears welled in Emily’s eyes, spilling hot down her cheeks. "Yes, I do."
The hospital entrance was a whirlwind—Ana flashing her ID badge and rattling off vitals to the triage nurse in her no-nonsense tone; a team of nurses swarming with a wheelchair, wheeling Emily through echoing sterile halls under blinding fluorescent lights; the others flanking her like a protective wall, fielding questions and holding doors.
Contractions now felt like knives twisting deeper, Emily shaking uncontrollably by the time they got her into the delivery room—monitors beeping to life, IV lines stinging her arm, the air heavy with antiseptic and her own ragged breaths.
"Emily, eyes on me," Ana said, kneeling by the bed and lacing their fingers, her grip unyielding. "You’re dilating fast. The babies are coming soon—just follow my cues."
She panted, vision swimming. "I hate this part. Make it stop."
"I can’t, but I’m with you every second," Ana said, voice cracking for the first time.
"I hate all of you for knocking me up!" Emily twisted to glare at the group clustered around: Reyes biting her nails, Ivory frozen mid-pace, Hellen hovering by the equipment, Lily dabbing her forehead again.
"If this lasts one extra minute, I’m divorcing every single one of you," she growled through a whimper.
Reyes leaned close, voice gentle. "Deal. But you’re our everything—keep fighting."
Thunder rolled through her next—a contraction so intense Emily screamed, crushing Ana’s hand until knuckles popped. "You promised this would be manageable! Liar!"
Ana winced but held on. "I said your body knows the drill. Didn’t say it wouldn’t suck."
"Not. Helping!" Emily sobbed, curling forward.
"You’re right—it’s hell," Ana admitted, sweeping damp hair from her eyes. "But you’re tougher than all of us combined. One breath at a time."
Emily let out an outraged whine. "I don’t wanna be tough! Sedate me!"
Hellen glanced at the others from the foot of the bed, voice low. "She’s scarier than a horror movie right now."
"She’s pushing out our kids," Ivory shot back, awe edging her fear. "Let her be."
"I heard that!" Emily barked.
"Good—use the mad," Hellen encouraged. "It’s powering you through."
"Bite me later," Emily threatened.
"Deal—post-babies," Ana cut in smoothly as nurses adjusted the bed and stirrups, monitors spiking wildly.
Emily’s laugh caught halfway, morphing into a scream as the pain peaked again. The room dissolved into a frenzy—sweat pouring, nurses calling updates— "Ten centimetres—fully effaced!"— Ana’s relentless coaching— "Push now on the contraction—hold for ten—beautiful, again!"—Emily’s world narrowing to pressure, burn, and burn again.
"I’m never doing this again!" she roared, face purple with effort, veins bulging.
"Yeah, you are," Reyes slipped out, then clapped a hand over her mouth.
Emily whipped around mid-push. "Excuse me?"
"Uh—nothing!" Reyes stammered.
"Coward," Emily gasped, then howled as the wave crested.
"So close now," Ana urged, forehead to forehead. "Head’s out—give me one massive push!"
Emily sobbed, every muscle screaming, bearing down with everything left—grunting, trembling, veins throbbing. The room tensed... then a piercing, furious wail cut the air.
Dead silence fell, electric.
Ana’s face lit with pure joy, eyes wet. "Boy—one down. He’s perfect."
Emily went limp, tears flooding. "My—"
Another cry joined, shrill and strong.
"Twins!" Ana laughed, stunned. "Push through—here comes number two!"
Emily’s disbelieving laugh broke into sobs. "Figures—your fault!"
The second birth barrelled fast and furious: Emily quaking, partners murmuring nonstop— "You’ve got this!" "Almost!" "We love you!" —nurses efficient around her. The boy arrived with a lusty cry blending his brother’s, the sound slicing straight to Emily’s soul.
"Two boys—strong and healthy," Ana choked out as they were cleaned, weighed, swaddled.
Emily sagged into the pillows, sobbing pure relief, body a wreck of aches. "I hate you all," she whispered, voice raw.
Hellen chuckled wetly. "Message received. Love you back~"
Reyes sniffled openly; Ivory gaped in wonder; Lily gripped her hand tight; Ana pressed a lingering kiss to her temple. "You were incredible."
"Not polite about it," Emily mumbled, spent.
Ana grinned through tears. "Furious and perfect."
Her laugh bubbled weak as the boys nestled skin-to-skin on her chest—warm, squirming bundles, one rooting fussily, the other yawning into milky light. All fury melted into overwhelming tenderness.
"Oh," she whispered, fingers tracing tiny noses. "My boys... our family."
