Chapter 655: Great News
"Okay. We got it."
Evan turned to Michael after hanging up. "Great news, Michael!"
"What great news?" Michael perked up. "Was that about Wendy?"
Evan nodded and said, "My guy just called me. They spotted Christian and Wendy on Carlyle Street."
"Carlyle Street?" Michael asked. "How sure was your guy?"
Michael couldn’t help but be excited after hearing a clue about where Wendy was.
He had been waiting for too long.
However, he didn’t understand why Christian took Wendy to Carlyle Street as he reckoned that Christian should’ve come to his area already.
’Why did he take Wendy there?’ he wondered. ’It sounds too suspicious.’ Regardless, Michael was willing to head there even if it was a trap.
He wasn’t far from Carlyle Street, and his guys were searching on that street yesterday.
They had investigated many places by now, and they would be able to find where Christian was based in three days.
Now that he knew where the last place Christian and Wendy had been, it made their job much easier.
"It’s true. I’m already starting to deploy everyone there. Unfortunately, they’re still scattered in different places, so it’ll take at least two hours for all of them to get there," Evan explained. "I’ll ask those who are already there to make sure that they can keep track of Christian and Wendy."
"Let’s head there now," Michael suggested as he paced back and forth beside his car.
Evan glanced at the dishes on his table and sighed.
He hadn’t had a good meal in the past two days, and right after he convinced Michael to have a nice lunch with him before starting to search again, he received a phone call about Christian and Wendy.
However, he agreed without much hesitation.
After all, they couldn’t afford to waste time at the moment.
Todd was searching somewhere else, so he wasn’t with them.
Michael and Evan originally planned to part ways after lunch, but now that they had found out where Christian and Wendy were, they just needed to get everyone to gather at Carlyle Street.
Michael instantly called Todd after he got into the car and asked him to head to Carlyle Street.
...
Christian and Wendy had an amazing time having lunch together.
For Christian, this was probably the happiest he had ever been in his life.
Toward the end of the meal, Christian’s phone started to ring before he could say something to Wendy.
It was his assistant.
Christian picked up the phone. The assistant spoke worriedly, "Something bad is about to happen, Mr. Lucas. Evan’s guys are heading to Carlyle Street, and they will be arriving there in an hour."
"Noted. Thanks."
Christian wasn’t surprised by what his assistant had said at all.
He had thought of the risk when he decided to bring Wendy here.
He knew that Evan’s and Michael’s people had been searching nearby, so it wouldn’t take them long to find out exactly where he was.
However, he couldn’t refuse Wendy’s request for him to bring her here.
Wendy was smart, and she would get suspicious if he insisted on locking her home.
Even if he could stop her from going out today, he couldn’t keep her at home forever. The longer he tried, the sooner Wendy would be able to see through his lies.
Christian said calmly, "Stop them from coming here no matter what. We’re leaving now."
His original plan was to leave tomorrow, but it seemed that he couldn’t afford to stay any longer.
...
"What happened?" Wendy asked Christian as she heard him say that they were leaving. "Was it very serious?"
Christian looked at Wendy, trying to sound calm and steady. "Nothing serious."
"We’re a couple, aren’t we? And I don’t want you to keep things from me," Wendy said. "No matter what happens, we’ll get through this together."
Christian hesitated for a second after hearing Wendy’s words. He said, "Michael’s men found us. We need to leave here now."
"Michael? You mean the drug lord?" Wendy said, shocked. "How did he find us?"
"I’m not sure, but we have to leave now," Christian replied seriously.
"But, but isn’t he a drug lord? How dare he show up on a street like that? And besides, why should we be hiding from a criminal?" Wendy asked, confused.
"Shouldn’t that drug lord be afraid of us?"
Wendy looked bewildered as she waited for Christian’s explanation.
Christian was at a loss after hearing Wendy’s questions.
He went silent and thought for a while, and then he said, "Michael is way too powerful and has a lot of connections. Since I saved your life, he has been looking for us. "Although he is a drug lord, and thus should be afraid of getting exposed, we don’t need to confront him directly. Let’s leave first, then we’ll call the police."
"But didn’t you tell me before that Lake City is where Michael is based and that he wouldn’t be able to find this place in a short time?" Wendy pressed on, frowning.
"I... I was surprised as well, but I can confirm that he is coming at us with his minions," Christian said worriedly. "Wendy, let’s get out of here first and head somewhere safe. The Interpol is also looking for him, and we’ll all be safe after he gets arrested."
"Are you saying that we don’t have any means of protecting ourselves against Michael?" Wendy was shocked.
Christian was embarrassed by what Wendy had said.
If he went by it, it would make him look useless as the president of a large corporation who had to hide from a drug lord.
If he didn’t admit that he would be overpowered, Wendy would get suspicious and refused to leave with him.
Christian scratched his head as he thought of a suitable explanation to convince Wendy.
He went silent again and said, "Wendy, he is a cunning and ruthless drug lord. This isn’t about the power we have, and I’m not afraid of him in the slightest. I’m just worried that you might get hurt. Last time, Michael managed to abduct you because I was careless. This time, I must make sure that you and our kids are safe even if that means we have to hide from him."
What Christian said made him look like the perfect husband and a loving father.
Christian grabbed Wendy’s hand and started to walk out of the restaurant as he explained it to her.
He didn’t have much time. Michael already knew that they were here, and the people working for Michael, Evan and Todd, would be able to corner them easily.
He had to leave before they arrived. Otherwise, it would be the end for him.
Wendy nodded after seeing how nervous Christian was. She said, "Okay, let’s get out of here."
Christian immediately felt relieved after hearing that.
Suddenly, Wendy pressed her belly right after she stood up. "Wait, I have to go to the bathroom first. Would you mind giving me a second?"
...
Wendy let go of Christian’s hand as she made that request.
Christian refused to let go. He pretended to sound concerned and asked, "What happened? Are you having a stomachache? You were completely fine just now."
Wendy nodded as her face paled. "Maybe it’s because of the food we just ate. I was feeling a bit nauseous and thought that it would go away if I ate, but it’s getting worse. I’ll be quick. Just give me a few minutes."
Christian looked at Wendy, and he could tell that she was really in pain.
However, he didn’t have much time to escape. He hesitated for a second and said, "Can’t you hold it? We can go to the bathroom after we get out of here."
"I can, but it might be bad for our baby," Wendy said, looking more agonized. She squeezed Christian’s hand and pleaded, "I promise it won’t take long. Head to the car with Zen first. I’ll join you guys shortly."
"Well..." Christian whispered.
"I’m feeling worse." Wendy slightly bowed down.
Christian had no choice but to let go of Wendy. "Please be quick."
Wendy immediately looked for the bathroom.
As soon as she walked in, she went straight to the sink and turned the tap on.
She washed her hand as she tried to keep herself from vomiting.
Yes, she washed the hand that Christian held.
She looked at the mirror in front of her. She saw a beautiful woman with fair skin and perfect facial features. However, her eyes were filled with anxiety and confusion.
Christian just told her that he took a bullet for her, which was something that she recalled.
However, what she didn’t tell him was that she also remembered something else... she picked up the gun on the ground and aimed it at Christian while he was lying on the ground covered in blood.
Although she still had no recollection of anything else that happened, she was certain that Christian wasn’t her husband if she was trying to kill him after he saved her life.
It was likely that Christian was not only not her husband but also her enemy.
That was why she pretended to be moved and regretful in front of Christian when she recalled that incident.
She went along with Christian’s lies so that he would let his guard down.
She knew that she wouldn’t have a good chance of saving herself from Christian until he believed that she had bought his lies.
Wendy now suspected that it wasn’t Michael who kidnapped her. Instead, it might be Christian who was behind all these.
She almost had no memories of Christian and Michael, and all the pieces about them that she could recollect were scattered and blurry.
She was certain that Christian was only telling her what he wanted her to believe in.
The real reason why she had said she wanted to go to the bathroom was to stall Christian. Her stomach was fine.
Since Christian said that Michael was coming at them, she wanted to delay leaving until Michael arrived.
If she couldn’t stall Christian for that long, he would at least not get too far.
Wendy didn’t believe at all that Michael would be coming at them with a large group of people in broad daylight. After all, Christian had told her that Michael was a drug lord.
She might be more convinced if Michael’s identity hadn’t been exposed. However, based on what Christian had said, even Interpol was in pursuit of him, so there was no way that Michael would dare to be so reckless.
Wendy looked at her hands as the water ran through the tap.
She turned off the tap and walked to a cubicle.
