Chapter 64: A Virtuous Wife

Yvonne had always known that Michael did not love her back. She knew that his indulgence toward her was just to fulfill his promise. If not for that, she would not have had to drug him three years ago. However, she never expected Wendy to get involved and end up marrying Michael instead. If not for Wendy’s appearance, she would be Michael’s wife right now. Now that she was hearing these words straight from Michael, she felt like the sky had collapsed.

"I’m just a little sister?" Yvonne laughed in anger as she took a few steps back. "Michael, I don’t want to be your younger sister, I want to be your wife."

"Wendy is my wife," said Michael. "Don’t worry, I will organize a ball for you and let you personally choose among the handsome young men in Lake City, okay?"

"No," Yvonne shook her head desperately with tears flowing down her face, "I don’t want anyone else but you."

"Yvonne, listen to me," Michael said patiently, "I can tell everyone that you are my god-sister so that your in-laws will not dare to look down on you no matter what kind of family you marry into. With me around, no one will ever dare to bully you."

"Michael, are you really so heartless?" Yvonne’s eyes were filled with sadness. However, there was also a trace of viciousness. She said, "You’re treating me so cruelly because of Wendy Stewart. If not for her, I would have married you a long time ago. This is all her fault!"

"This has nothing to do with her. Even if she didn’t exist, I still wouldn’t have fallen in love with you," said Michael, "We’ve known each other for close to five years, but l only met Wendy three years ago. She appeared in my life later than you did, so it’s not because of her."

"No, it’s all because of her," said Yvonne, who had always hated Wendy. At that moment, she hated her more than anything in the world and wanted nothing more than to slap her. She continued, "If she had never appeared, I’m sure you would have fallen in love with me eventually. Even if you didn’t, you would have married me. But now, you’re telling me that you want to introduce me to other men, and that the most you can do are acknowledge me as your god-sister. Ha ha."

"Yvonne, please calm down," said Michael, who could not bear to see Yvonne in this state.

"How can I calm down? How do you expect me to calm down?!" Yvonne was so emotional that she started screaming

"Yvonne..."

Michael called out her name once again, but Yvonne covered her ears. She screamed, "I don’t want to listen to you anymore, I don’t want to!"

At that, she ran out of the room with tears still streaming down her face. She no longer wished to hear Michael speak his unfeeling words anymore.

Sobbing, she ran into the elevator and squatted in the corner. For a long time, she did not come to her senses. She had come to deliver Michael some home-cooked food today because she wanted to hear him tell her that he had missed her, and she wanted to see him pamper her like before.

She did not come to hear him say all those things. After stepping out of MC Enterprise, she received a call from Christian.

Since she was in a bad mood, she rejected his call. However, she was suddenly reminded of what he had said.

She thought, perhaps Christian can really help me.

After all, Michael had made himself extremely clear today. She had no other choice. Dialing Christian’s number, Yvonne sniffled and said as calmly as possible, "Christian, can you really help me win Michael back?"

"Wait for me at the café opposite the office." With that, Christian hung up. He knew that Yvonne was someone who would not believe her fate until she was confronted with the cold, hard facts.

She had to hear those words from Michael before she would truly listen to him. Otherwise, she would always perceive him to be inferior to Michael and treat everything he said with suspicion. That attitude would have made things a lot more difficult to deal with.

...

When Christian arrived at the café, Yvonne was already there. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying. She kept her head slightly bowed as if she did not wish for Christian to see her in such a sorry state.

Chuckling softly, Christian said, "What is there to hide? Failure is not such a terrible thing. What matters is that you recognize your own abilities."

"If you’re just here to make a fool out of me, that’s completely unnecessary," said Yvonne with a sneer as she looked up at him.

"Compared to me, you are not much better."

"I don’t have the time or energy to make fun of you," Christian snorted. "All I can say is that you must do exactly what I say if you hope to win Michael back."

"Christian, what exactly are you trying to achieve by doing this?" Yvonne frowned slightly.

She did not quite understand why Christian kept trying to seek her cooperation. She said, "If your goal from the start was to snatch Michael’s girlfriend, I should have been your target. But you never did anything to me. Instead, you chose to target Wendy Stewart."

Christian could not hide how absurd he thought Yvonne’s words were.

He thought, does she think that she should have been my target? I’m not that stupid. I know that a woman like Yvonne is in no way truly attractive to someone like Michael. From the start, I’ve had my eyes on Wendy. Now, it’s also been proven that Michael does not love Yvonne.

And although he did not feel anything for Wendy in the past, he has fallen in love with her now.

"My goal here isn’t important. You just need to know that you will benefit greatly if you choose to work with me," said Christian, who did not wish to reveal too much to Yvonne.

Yvonne had no choice but to listen to him now.

...

Wendy was still sulking after she returned to her office.

She thought, how dare Michael ask me to pour a glass of water for Yvonne? I wonder what they’re up to in his office now.

Since she had already left his office, it would be awkward for her to go back. She did not know what time Yvonne left, but she was very aware that Michael did not look for her the entire afternoon. Her heart started pounding.

She thought, has Michael’s love for Yvonne been rekindled? Or perhaps Michael has never stopped loving Yvonne, and everything he has done for me recently was just an act? Or maybe Michael somehow likes us both? As her imagination ran wild, she felt like she was going insane.

When it was almost time to head out from work, Michael dialed Wendy’s office extension number and said, "Get me more water."

Wendy was still furious when she received the call. She did not want to go, but since they were in a professional setting and she was his assistant, she had to draw a line between work and private affairs.

With a sullen face, she entered Michael’s office to do as he had instructed. She could not help but look around the surroundings.

Michael seemed to understand what she was thinking. He smiled, "Yvonne left a long time ago.

"What does that have to do with me?" asked Wendy calmly as she lowered her head.

When she placed the glass of water on the desk, Michael grabbed her hand and said delightfully, "Are you jealous?"

"Not at all," said Wendy, refusing to admit it.

"What is there to be jealous about? The relationship between you and Yvonne has been going on for such a long time." Her words were obviously filled with jealousy.

Michael could not help but laugh out loud. The more he did, the angrier Wendy became.

However, she also knew that Michael was just teasing her. She picked up the glass of water and gulped it all down in one go. Then, she returned the glass to its original position and said angrily, "Go get more water on your own if you’re thirsty."

"In that case, let’s just go home," said Michael as he stood up and grabbed his coat. "I’ve been working overtime for so many days, I’m exhausted. I deserve to rest well tonight."

...

Back home, Wendy cooked a few simple dishes for dinner. After the meal, Michael lay on the bed.

When Wendy got out of the shower to find Michael sleeping on the bed, she hesitated for a moment before saying, "I’ve cleaned up the spare bedroom for you. You can sleep in there instead." Afterward, she deliberately added, "I’m used to sleeping by myself. I’m afraid that you won’t be able to fall asleep if sleep beside me."

"In that case, you should start getting used to sleeping with me," said Michael, who had no intention of leaving, "We are a married couple, after all, and it makes no sense for us. to sleep in separate rooms. Moreover, Grandmother wants her great-grandson soon."

Wendy knew she had to choose her words carefully, as Michael could get angry. However, she was afraid that something would happen to the child she was carrying if they really slept in the same bed. After all, they were both adults.

On top of that, they were married. It would be even more awkward for her to refuse Michael if he wanted the two of them to be intimate.

Pursing her lips, she remained where she was, unsure of what to do. After a few moments, she said, "I’ll sleep in the spare bedroom, then."

"Why are you so insistent on not sleeping together in the same bed?" Michael was still puzzled. He stared at Wendy inquisitively and asked, "Don’t you think that it’s only right for us to sleep together?"

If this were like before, Wendy would have been eager about Michael spending every single night with her. Now, however, things were different.

"Michael, if I..." was all she managed to blurt out before she stopped. She wanted to ask him if he could accept having a child with her. However, when the words reached her lips, she grew afraid to put them out in the open.

She thought, what if Michael still does not want this child?

When she first found out about her pregnancy three months ago, she was filled with joy and wanted to tell Michael about it. However, he never used to believe her about anything and had even told her that she was not worthy to carry his child. Even though three months had passed since that incident and Michael’s attitude toward her was much better now, she still did not want to put her child at risk.

"What’s wrong?" asked Michael when he noticed the dreadful expression on Wendy’s face. "Are you feeling unwell?"

Wendy shook her head and gave him an exaggerated smile. She said, "No, I just want you to give me some time to prepare myself. I’m still too traumatized by the past to bring myself to sleep in the same bed as you right now."

When Michael heard the word ’traumatized, guilt and regret filled him up. He acknowledged that he had treated Wendy poorly in the past.

Standing up, he said with a sigh, "I’ll go and sleep in the other room." After taking two steps, he smiled and added, "However, I won’t let you take too long." His tone was extremely affectionate.

Wendy’s cheeks flushed red. She knew what he was referring to. However, it would not take too long. After all, her belly was starting to swell. Before that happened, she needed to consider whether she wanted to tell Michael about her pregnancy. If their relationship continued to progress at this rate and it stabilized, Wendy would pick a suitable time to tell him the truth about their child. But right now, she was still afraid.

...

The following day, Wendy woke up early to prepare breakfast for Michael. She cooked porridge and some simple side dishes. "If you want to stay here, I’m afraid that you won’t be able to eat as luxuriously as before. However, I’ll prepare three meals for you every day," she said.

"It seems that I married a virtuous wife," said Michael with an exceptionally sincere smile on his face, "If this were like before." At this topic, he decided to shut his mouth. After all, it was such a pleasant morning, and there was no point in mentioning sad things from the past.

Wendy let a slight smile creep onto her face.
