As Christian sat in his office and took in his familiar surroundings, the smile that was often on his face slowly subsided. His gaze turned ominous.
He picked up an ornament from his desk and squeezed it so forcefully that blue veins bulged on the back of his hand, revealing the turmoil that he felt inside.
He had supported Michael in taking over as the chairman, but it was not of his own will. After all, the outcome had already been set in stone. He knew that Michael would not have expected this move from him.
However, three more months in MC Enterprise was sufficient time for him. Michael’s suspicious personality, coupled with the family environment that he had grown up in, made it difficult for him to fully trust anyone. Even though he was already starting to fall in love with Wendy, any coincidental meetings between her and Christian in the company would still drive him to lose his temper and suspect them of having an affair. This was precisely why Christian tried his best to keep his place here.
As long as he remained within the company, there would be a way for him to instigate conflict between Michael and Wendy. For him, three months was enough time for him to create havoc in their relationship.
Slamming the ornament back down on the table, Christian snorted, "Michael, I’ll leave Wendy with you for now. It won’t be long before she will be mine."
His phone suddenly started ringing, shattering the tranquility of the office. Christian’s face darkened when he saw that it was from Yvonne.
To him, she was just a brainless woman. If Wendy had not lost herself because she loved Michael too much, there was no way she would have let a woman like Yvonne bully her for three whole years.
This was also precisely why it had taken only two short months for Michael to fall completely in love with Wendy after she made up her mind to get divorced, because she was finally standing up for herself.
Christian believed that there must be a secret between Yvonne and Michael that no one else knew about. Otherwise, there was no way that Michael would indulge her behavior for so many years and allow her to brag about being his girlfriend in public. Yet, if Yvonne refused to talk about it, there was nothing that Christian could do. After all, he could not possibly pry her mouth open.
But none of this mattered right now. As long as Christian could ascertain that there was something else going on between Yvonne and Michael, he was confident of eventually achieving a breakthrough in this mystery. As for whether they were together out of love, friendship, or guilt, none of it mattered.
If he was not certain that Yvonne still served some purpose in his agenda, he would not want anything to do with her. Right now, he could only suppress his temper and answer the phone.
The moment the call was connected, Yvonne’s angry voice was heard on the other end, "Christian, you kept asking me to wait, but when does it end? I have not gotten in touch with Michael for over ten days, and I haven’t seen him either. I kept waiting patiently until now, but I just heard the news about you almost getting fired from the company. Are you sure that there is anything you can do for me? If not, I’ll think of other ways to win Michael back on my own."
News about MC Enterprise’s board of directors meeting this morning had already been reported in the media. Since MC Enterprise was the leading company in Lake City, any movement within it instantly caught the attention of other companies. A major event like the replacement of the chairman was sure to make the news instantly.
After seeing the news, Yvonne found Christian to be an unreliable person.
She thought, his own position within MC Enterprise is precarious, how can he possibly help me win Michael back?
Hence, she decided to call Christian to question him.
When Christian heard those words, he was able to confirm his opinions on Yvonne being a brainless woman. She could not be compared to Wendy Stewart.
"Do you really want to think of other ways on your own?" Christian sneered, "Just try to call Michael and see how he reacts to you. You’re so stupid! I told you before, you must listen to me if you want to win Michael back."
Before this, Yvonne had believed that Christian would be able to help her. Hence, she could put up with him insulting her. But now, she could not endure it anymore. She said, "I’m stupid? If you’re so smart, why are you in this situation right now? You’re no match for Michael, so how dare you say these things about me?!"
Christian could not help but scoff. Unwilling to talk to Yvonne anymore, he simply said, "How about you try giving Michael a call, or going to his office? I’ll wait for you to show up at my office in two hours." With that, he hung up.
Talking to someone like Yvonne was just a waste of time.
Yvonne gritted her teeth when she realized that Christian had hung up on her. She said, "You’re just a worthless b*stard, how dare you reprimand me? Fine, I’ll do as you say. I don’t believe that Michael doesn’t care about me anymore."
She first dialed Michael’s number. Just as she had expected, he did not answer her call.
However, she had no idea if he was genuinely busy or deliberately avoiding her. Regardless of the reason, she made up her mind to go to Michael’s office. Even though she no longer worked as his assistant, everyone in the company knew her as Michael’s ex-girlfriend.
Hence, nobody dared to stop her from entering.
After all, the affairs within wealthy families like Michael’s were extremely complicated and prone to change. Nobody knew who Michael might claim to be his girlfriend or his wife the next day. If they offended Yvonne now only for her to regain Michael’s favor, they would be in deep trouble. Hence, Yvonne managed to make her way to the president’s office without any trouble.
Michael was not in the office. Instead, Wendy came in with freshly brewed coffee. When Yvonne saw her, she could not suppress her rage.
She exclaimed, "Wendy Stewart, don’t be so proud of yourself just yet. I’ll win Michael back sooner or later."
Confronted with Yvonne’s provocation, Wendy remained completely indifferent. Even in the past, she never took Yvonne seriously. In her opinion, Yvonne was not worthy of being her opponent at all. Back then, she was just helpless because Michael loved Yvonne and hated her.
Even though she did not know if Michael still loved Yvonne at this point, she was sure that she could not control his thoughts.
"In that case, I wish you the best of luck," said Wendy in a neutral tone.
It was precisely this tone that made Yvonne even angrier. She said, "Why are you so smug? Michael just thinks you are refreshing right now. Give it some time! Soon, he will definitely grow tired of you and come stand by to my side."
Wendy simply hummed in acknowledgment, as she could not be bothered to respond further.
This side of Wendy made Yvonne feel like she was punching a piece of cotton-no matter how much force she put into it, there was no impact.
At just that moment, Michael entered the office. He heard Yvonne’s coquettish voice before he even saw her, "Michael, you’re finally here. If you arrived any later, Wendy would have... she would have..." With that, she burst into tears.
Wendy was completely speechless. She thought, can’t this woman come up with any new antics?
She has been resorting to the same act for the past few years. Why is she doing it again when Michael did not even believe her the last time that she tried this? What exactly is going through her mind?
Seeing Yvonne about to pounce on him, Michael stepped back and avoided her. With a slight frown, he said unhappily, "Why are you here?"
"I came to congratulate you," said Yvonne, suppressing her anger. Turning around, she picked up the lunch box on the table and continued, "I saw the news about you becoming MC Enterprise’s chairman, so I personally cooked your favorite dishes and came to see you. Michael, you haven’t visited me in so long. I’ve been waiting for you in the hospital day after day, I was too afraid to call because I didn’t want to bother you. I kept hoping that you would come to see me, but it’s been so many days, and you haven’t dropped by at all. Look, my ankle has fully recovered, and I came to see you as soon as I was discharged from the hospital."
"I’ve already had my lunch," said Michael calmly.
"It’s already late afternoon, I’m sure that you must be a little hungry. Even if you’re not, you can just eat a bit. I spent a long-time cooking for you" said Yvonne as she stretched out her hands. "Look, I even have burns where oil splattered onto my hands."
Wendy remained standing where she was, and she suddenly began to feel awkward. She reached out to touch her hair and said, "Erm, I’ll let you guys talk." With that, she started walking out.
Based on her current relationship with Michael, she felt that it would be inappropriate for her to make a fuss about this. Hence, she decided to be magnanimous and let Michael deal with this problem on his own. If Michael really still had lingering feelings for Yvonne, then anything Wendy did or said would be useless.
On the contrary, it would only make her seem jealous.
Michael was surprised by Wendy’s generosity. He thought, didn’t she used to get jealous every time she saw Yvonne?
"Wait a minute." The look in Michael’s eyes grew tentative as he took the lunch box from Yvonne.
Yvonne immediately grinned in delight.
When Wendy heard Michael’s voice, she turned around just in time to see him opening the lunch box.
"You should get a glass of water for Yvonne," said Michael calmly, "After all, it was not easy for her to come all the way here."
The change in Michael’s expression made Wendy frown.
She thought, wasn’t he still indifferent to Yvonne just now? Why is he suddenly showing concern for her again? Could it be that he really can’t let go of her?
Her face fell at those thoughts. Angered, she replied coldly, "I’m too busy for that." With that, she left the office.
Michael’s lips curved into a barely perceptible smile when he saw the angry expression on Wendy’s face. Indeed, she still felt jealous.
Noticing Michael’s gaze on Wendy, Yvonne whined unhappily, "Michael, give it a taste. I really spent a very long time cooking for you."
Michael’s smile faded when he glanced at Yvonne. He closed the lunch box and returned it to her, saying, "You can eat it yourself, I have to work to do."
Yvonne looked dazed. She thought, didn’t Michael just ask Wendy to pour me a glass of water? Why did his demeanor change so quickly?
"Michael, did I do something wrong?" From Yvonne’s tone, it was obvious that she was close to tears. She said, "If I did something wrong, you should just tell me. I promise to change."
"Yvonne, you should know what I feel about you," said Michael sternly with an equally solemn expression on his face. "I promised you that I’ll take care of you forever. In the past, you told everyone that you were my girlfriend, and I let that slide. In fact, I only doted on you even more. Now, I promise that you will never have to worry about food and clothing. I will also help you find a good man to marry further down the road."
"Michael..." Those words stunned Yvonne. She said, "Are you saying that you don’t want me anymore?"
"I told you that I will help you live the rest of your life without any material worries," said Michael.
"But I don’t want that. Michael, have you fallen in love with Wendy?" Yvonne started sobbing miserably. "I just want to be with you and stay by your side. Even if you lose everything, I still want you. Wendy only married you because of your wealth and status, and I’m certain that she will abandon you if you lose everything that you have. I’m not like her, I’m the person who loves you most in this world. Michael, how could you fall in love with Wendy? Have you forgotten how she tricked you into marrying her? You cannot believe her lies."
"Yvonne..." Michael knew that he was being cruel toward Yvonne, but since things had already come to this, allowing Yvonne to continue harboring hopes about their relationship would only hurt her more. He said, "You should know that I’ve never seen you in a romantic light. In the past, I tried to fall in love with you so that you can have someone to lean on, but I couldn’t do it. I only see you as a little sister."
