Chapter 499: Do You Think I Can Be Discharged?
"At the same time?" Michael’s mind became clearer all of a sudden.
He opened his eyes wide and asked with mixed feeling, "You mean you’ll prepare the breakfast at the same time for me? Not especially for me?"
Wendy knew what he had meant by that and she said purposely, "What do you think then? If you are not interested, you can eat the breakfast your home chef prepares for you. I am pretty sure that their cooking tastes better than mine."
Wendy stood up and went to the bathroom to wash up.
She left Michael lying on the bed alone, sighing loudly, "I am just a poor guy without his wife’s love!"
Wendy glanced at the master of acting. She just shook her head and ignored him.
When Wendy was about to leave the room after washing up and changing her clothes, Michael compromised, "Could you cook me pumpkin porridge at the same time too?"
Upon hearing what Michael said, Wendy could not help but puff out a laugh.
It was still early in the morning and so Michael closed his eyes and back to bed.
Wendy wanted to prepare breakfast personally for Michael’s grandmother. Of course, Michael would not stop her from doing so. Although he could not bear to let his wife wake up so early, it would be a waste of effort for Wendy if he stopped her from doing so.
Therefore, Michael went back to sleep with peace of mind.
As soon as Wendy stepped into the kitchen, she was surprised to see all the chefs already in the midst of preparing breakfast.
Moreover, there was such a variety, all kinds of Western and Chinese food.
The helper in the kitchen saw Wendy and asked immediately, "Mrs. Lucas, why are you in the kitchen? It is still early. Why don’t you go back to sleep? Are you hungry?
Breakfast will be ready soon."
Wendy felt so embarrassed after hearing a bunch of words from the helper, "Well, I wanted to prepare breakfast for grandmother myself."
The helper was so surprised that Wendy woke up so early to prepare breakfast for Michael’s grandmother.
"Anything you need? We can help you too," smiled the helper.
In fact, Wendy’s culinary skills were quite good.
Soon, she had prepared a table full of dishes.
When Michael’s grandmother came downstairs, the helper approached her with a smile, "Madam, the breakfast today was all prepared by Mrs. Lucas. You have to eat more than usual today."
"Wendy prepared it?" asked Michael’s grandmother when she saw the sumptuous meal on the table. Her eyes lit up immediately, "Wendy woke up so early today?"
"That’s right. She came into the kitchen at six-thirty in the morning. She said that she wanted to prepare breakfast for you," said the helper happily when she saw Michael’s grandmother smile broadly.
"Then, I will definitely have to eat more then." As soon as she finished her words, she saw Wendy came out from the kitchen with porridge in her hands. She approached her immediately and said, "Wendy, you woke up so early this morning to prepare breakfast for me?"
Wendy placed the porridge on the table and smiled, "Grandmother, you have not tried my cooking yet except for your favourite lotus cake. Try some of these, and let me know how it tastes. If you like it, I will make lunch for you as well."
"Don’t fight with me in preparing lunch for Grandmother. She has not tried my cooking either," said Michael as he walked down, "Grandmother, I will let you try my cooking in the afternoon. I am pretty sure that it will taste better than Wendy’s cooking."
"All of your cooking tastes good," said Michael’s grandmother happily. She was so happy that she had a big smile on her face the whole time.
"Grandmother, you have never tried my cooking. Don’t you think that you are a little dishonest in your words?" Michael pouted.
Michael’s grandmother felt so contented when they doted her so much.
In fact, the taste of the food was not even that important anymore.
"Indeed, I am not sure how your cooking would taste. However, Wendy’s cooking smells so good. I doubt that her cooking would be worst than yours."
...
"Then you have to try my cooking in the afternoon for sure," said Michael, "By that time, you can compare our cooking and see who is the better chef in the house. But, you cannot be biased, okay?"
Wendy laughed as she said, "I am going to call the kids down."
"Mummy, we are coming," Leah and Jake came down happily.
"All of you are up already. Great! Let’s eat breakfast then. I can’t wait to eat. The delicious smell is making my mouth water," said Michael’s grandmother happily.
Wendy stepped forth to help her grandmother to her seat. She then served her a bowl of porridge.
Michael’s grandmother took a spoon and scooped a spoonful of porridge instantly.
She could not wait anymore.
Wendy was so afraid that she would burn her lips that she reminded her, "Grandmother, the porridge is piping hot. Please slow down and be careful!"
Michael’s grandmother replied to her with a hum and blew the food to cool it down a little before putting it into her mouth.
"Wow, it tastes so good. The porridge is soft and rich in flavor," praised the grandmother, "I did not know that you are such a good cook. Michael is so fortunate to have married you."
"What?" said Michael in a pitiful expression, "Grandmother, don’t you know that I am the one who makes breakfast at home? I have been the one who wakes up early every morning. Wendy woke up early for you just today. Normally, she sleeps till noon."
"You should be the one who cooks for her," his grandmother changed her mind and said, "You have an obligation to look after her. Women need their beauty sleep. It would be best for any woman to rest well."
"Grandmother, you are too biased!" Michael protested with displeasure, "Am I your grandchild or Wendy?"
"Wendy is my granddaughter-in-law. I prefer my granddaughter-in-law, so what?"
said his grandmother mischievously with a smile.
Upon seeing how happy his grandmother was, Michael felt the same too. He then said, "Well, as long as you are happy then."
Wendy laughed as she saw their bickering. She then took a custard bun and put it onto her grandmother’s plate.
However, Michael had no time to cook lunch for them. It was because he received a call from the company to call him over to handle some matter.
He was with his grandmother in the old manor all day yesterday. So, he had not gone back to the office at all.
However, he could not do so today.
Although his grandmother was reluctant to see him leave, she just threw him a despising look instead, "Go ahead and busy yourself with your things. I have Wendy with me here."
Wendy prepared lunch for her that day too. She even made some lotus cakes for her to enjoy at home.
Regardless of how happy the moments were, time passed quickly.
After dinner, Michael came over to the house to fetch them and go home.
Michael’s grandmother held onto Wendy’s hand while her smile faded. She was so reluctant to see them off, "You must bring the kids over whenever you are free, okay?"
"Don’t worry, Grandmother. We are staying in Lake City now. We will definitely come over to see you more often," said Wendy, "I have not started work yet, so I have a lot of time. But, I am afraid that you will find us annoying."
"How could I do so? I can’t wait for you all to come to stay here with me," sighed her grandmother.
"Grandmother, we will come over more often to see you," said Michael, "You have not tried my cooking yet. I am pretty sure that you will like what I make once you taste it."
"How about next weekend? Come over again next weekend then," his grandmother was so anxious that she fixed the date for them already.
"All right. We will come over next weekend to cook for you again," nodded Michael.
"Bye, great-grandmother," Leah and Jake bid her goodbye.
Upon seeing them go up the car, their great-grandmother missed them already. She hesitantly bid them goodbye.
It wasn’t until the car was out of her sight that Michael’s grandmother sighed as she turned around and went inside the house.
...
"How much longer do you intend to stay in the hospital?" Christian asked Zen as he stood in front of her. Zen was sitting on the bed.
Today was the third day Zen stayed in the hospital. Her face was as pale as a sheet.
Upon hearing how heartless Christian sounded, Zen lowered her eyes without even looking at him as she answered, "What has it got to do with you?"
It was the first time Christian came to visit her. But he was not here to show her concern. He asked her how long she would be staying in the hospital instead.
Zen sneered, "Perhaps Mr. Christian Lucas couldn’t bear to fork out the money for the hospital stay? I know that you’re currently short of money, but are you really that poor?"
The hospital expenses were nothing to Christian. Zen was being sarcastic on purpose. In fact, Zen was the one who paid for the admission fees. She could not forget what happened that night. There was blood between her legs. She was so terrified then.
She strained fiber of her being crying for help, but Christian did not open that door.
If Christian couldn’t hear her shouts because the walls were soundproofed, how could she have heard the ambulance siren as it arrived at the lobby?
"Rest assured. I’m not going to spend a single cent of yours," said Zen calmly.
"Come home with me now," said Christian. He then ordered his assistant next to him, "Go look into the discharge procedures for her."
"Are you out of your mind, Christian!" Zen was so stressed out when she saw the assistant turning around to follow Christian’s orders. "Mind your own business, Christian! You don’t love me anymore, so why do you want me discharged? You want me to go home with you and do all the household chores for you? I’ve had enough of all this nonsense, Christian. I don’t want to lead this kind of life anymore.
Could you just let me off? Just treat it as we’ve never known each other."
"Come home with me. I need you to work on more designs," Christian said coldly without any emotion. He was looking at Zen as if she were a total stranger. To be precise, she was not a total stranger to him, but a tool. A valuable tool for Christian.
"Work on more designs?" Zen could not help but laugh out loud upon hearing what he said. "Christian, do you think I can produce such great designs that are comparable to Wendy’s? Are you really out of your mind? If I were that capable, the DR Group design department would be famous a few years back when I was there."
"You don’t have to be as good as Wendy. I just need you to produce something that meets a certain quality," Christian knew that Wendy’s designs were so outstanding that no one could surpass her. So he did not force Zen to be as good as Wendy.
"Produce something that meets a certain quality?" Zen gazed at Christian doubtfully, "Christian, what are you trying to do now? You should know my situation better than anyone else. How can I produce anything right now? You have been acting strange.
You have never shown any concern about my work in the past. But you’ve been forcing me to draw out my designs recently."
"You don’t need to know what I’m up to," said Christian. "What you need to do now is to get discharged, come home with me and continue with your drawings!"
"Look at me now," said Zen as she pointed at her face. "Do you think I can be discharged in this state?"
Some thoughts flashed through Christian’s mind, but none of them was about Zen’s wellbeing. All she could see was how cold and callous he was.
"I was bleeding badly that night when they sent me to the hospital. The doctor put in so much effort to save the child. He even said that I need to be put under observation in this hospital for a week. Even if I am fine, I’d need to be on bedrest after discharge," said Zen. "Do you think I can be discharged now and continue drawing designs for you?"
