Chapter 401: Swear That You Will Never See Michael Again

"Why are you rushing all over the place?" Grandmother scolded. "How disorganized!"

"Mr. Lucas got injured," the maid said immediately.

"What?" Grandmother stood up right away.

Hearing this, Wendy stood up unknowingly as well as she looked towards the kitchen and asked, "Wasn’t he cutting fruits? How did he get injured?"

"He cut his hand accidentally while cutting fruits, and he’s bleeding a lot," the maid explained worriedly. "Why don’t you guys go and look?"

Wendy didn’t hesitate at all as she walked towards the kitchen.

A smile graced grandmother’s face as she saw Wendy walk to the kitchen anxiously.

As she had expected, Wendy still cared about Michael.

She then followed Wendy calmly.

But Wendy came to a realization after taking a few steps.

She frowned before coming to a halt.

How serious can his injury be if he was just cutting fruits?

Did the maid have to be so anxious?

What’s more, grandmother was the one who had pulled Michael into the kitchen earlier.

But later, she came out alone and said that Michael wanted to cut the fruits himself.

There must be something more to this than just Michael cutting himself accidentally.

"Why have you stopped?" Grandmother asked Wendy as she saw her stop.

Wendy was still unsure about her guesses, but now she saw that grandmother didn’t look anxious about Michael at all.

What’s more, she cared more about why Wendy was stopping instead of worrying about what happened to Michael.

So, these proved that grandmother knew that Michael would get injured.

And she might even have been the one who got Michael injured.

Wendy had already seen through everything.

She was visibly not worried anymore as she smiled and said, "I thought about it. I’m not a doctor anyway, so I wouldn’t be able to help with Michael’s injury. There’s no point in me going to see him."

Grandmother couldn’t help but frown when she heard what Wendy had said.

Wendy had clearly looked very worried just now.

So, why is she suddenly not worried anymore?

"Erm... " Grandmother said, "Why don’t we just go in and take a look?"

"I’m really busy, so you can just take a look yourself. I’ll take my leave first." Wendy turned around, planning to leave.

Grandmother reached out, wanting to pull her back, but she didn’t touch Wendy at all.

"Wendy... " Grandmother called after her.

"Wendy... " Michael called out as well.

He had heard everything Wendy had just said.

He was in despair and extremely sad.

Michael’s hand was indeed bleeding.

He was pretty cruel to himself in putting up this show. He made a large cut across his thumb as a big patch of his skin got cut, causing blood to trickle down his hand.

It was just that he hadn’t expected Wendy to see through their ploy even before she had seen the injury.

So, of course, he couldn’t continue to put up the show anymore.

Michael let out a bitter smile as he walked towards Wendy as she stood rooted to the ground.

As he stood in front of Wendy with blood dripping down his hand, he looked at Wendy extremely gently as he lowered his voice and pleaded, "Wendy, can we talk?

Christian’s people are not here, neither is Todd nor Yonina, so can we just have a proper talk?"

Michael had to muster up a lot of courage to say that.

Just as grandmother thought about how she could help them, she heard what Michael had said, so she waved all the maids away before leaving silently.

It would naturally be for the best if the two of them could have a proper conversation.

Everyone else could only help them.

What happens, in the end, would only depend on their thoughts.

....

Soon after, there was no one else around them.

Even Grandmother had left.

Since Wendy didn’t have to care about Grandmother being around, she became more straightforward.

She looked directly at Michael before mocking, "What do you want to talk about? Do you want to talk about the injury on your hand?"

Wendy looked downwards at Michael’s finger that was still bleeding.

Wendy felt bad when she looked at the glaring blood.

He had indeed injured himself, after all.

But Wendy also knew that Michael inflicted the injury on himself.

So, there was nothing for her to feel bad for.

"I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to lie to you." Michael knew that what he did was wrong, so he hid his hand behind his back.

He didn’t want Wendy to see his injured finger.

"Lie to me?" Wendy’s smile became even more sarcastic as she said, "Are you saying that the injury on your finger is fake, Mr. Lucas?"

Wendy had said that on purpose.

"I’m sorry." Michael didn’t dare to look at Wendy, so he lowered his head a little.

"I really don’t want to hear that same line anymore." Wendy took a deep breath, retracted her smile as her expression turned angry and resigned. "Michael, if there’s nothing else, I don’t think that there’s anything for us to talk about."

"Wendy... " Michael was anxious when he heard Wendy say that, so he directly asked, "Is it still possible between us?"

Wendy felt very disappointed that Michael had asked that question.

Before Wendy could reply, Michael quickly explained, in case she became angry.

"We’re at the mansion now, so we’re not under the eyes of Christian. Christian had also already gotten the bid, so it wouldn’t affect our plan to take down Christian."

Previously, when Michael had gone to look for Wendy, she had blamed him for not thinking about the bigger picture.

Of course, it was indeed Michael’s fault for being rash back then.

"What do you plan to do if I say that it’s still possible? And what do you plan to do if I say that it’s not?" Wendy questioned.

Michael took a deep breath before answering honestly. "If it’s still possible, I will use my entire life to make it up to you. But if not... " Michael kept silent for a moment before continuing, "I will give my blessings to you and Todd."

"Give your blessings to Todd and me?" Wendy shook her head and smiled. "Looks like you still don’t understand me even though we’ve been married for so many years."

If Wendy were really together with Todd, why would she help him take down Christian?

She could have just stayed in Rheinsville City with Todd. There was no reason for her to cause trouble for herself.

"I... " Michael couldn’t understand what Wendy meant by that, so he asked, "Can you be clearer?"

"There’s nothing I want to say." Wendy’s smile slowly dampened as she turned around and said, "Help me tell Grandmother that I’m leaving first."

Wendy didn’t want to tell Grandmother herself as she was angry.

Michael watched Wendy leave as he couldn’t think of any reason to call her back anymore.

What he didn’t expect was for Winnie to walk over just as Wendy had started to leave.

At first, Winnie hadn’t seen Wendy. She was just hungry, so she threw her tantrum and shouted, "What’s there to eat? Quickly prepare some food for me to eat. I’m starving. If you guys haven’t prepared anything in ten minutes, I will fire all of you useless slackers!"

"What are you looking at, quickly... " Winnie had thought that Wendy, who had been standing in front of her, was a maid. But after taking a closer look, she realized it was Wendy. Her eyes widened, and she looked enrage as she shouted, "Wendy Stewart? What are you doing here?! Are you still here to cling onto Michael?!"

...

Wendy hadn’t expected to bump into Winnie just as she was about to leave.

Wendy felt resigned about Winnie as her mother-in-law.

From the beginning till now, Winnie had never liked Wendy at all.

She had always hoped for Yonina to be her daughter-in-law instead.

Winnie being biased against Wendy all this time made it impossible for them to get along well.

But right now, it didn’t matter to Wendy anymore.

Her relationship with Michael was complicated, so she didn’t have many opportunities to meet Winnie either.

Not only that now was the time for them to take Christian down, so she didn’t want to have any contact with Winnie.

"I was here to see Grandmother, and I’m about to leave," Wendy said to Winnie calmly.

"See Grandmother? I don’t believe you!" Winnie let out a cold hum as she had a terrible expression on her face. "You can trick Grandmother, but do you think it’ll be as easy to trick me? Let me tell you, Wendy Stewart, don’t bother. My son and Yonina have a great relationship right now, and their child will be born in a few months, so don’t bother trying!"

Wendy sighed as she shook her head.

She didn’t want to reason with Winnie any longer. Winnie would never believe her anyway.

She moved her leg to walk out of there.

But Winnie chose to block her way as she demanded, "You better make yourself clear today; otherwise, you’re not allowed to leave!"

"Aren’t you afraid that I would cling onto your son? Wouldn’t I be able to cling onto your son if I don’t leave now?" Wendy continued. "If you don’t let me go, I may stay to cling onto your son."

Wendy knew what Winnie cared about.

As she had expected, her saying that induced a frown on Winnie’s face.

Wendy wanted to take this opportunity to leave since she saw that Winnie was contemplating something.

But just as she was about to walk around Winnie, Winnie blocked her way again as she said, "Swear that you will never see Michael again, and I’ll let you leave."

Winnie’s request was way too unreasonable.

This caused Wendy’s face to fall as well.

No matter what her relationship with Michael was, and regardless of whether she would see Michael again, she shouldn’t be forced by Winnie to swear.

Winnie was bullying her.

This time, before Wendy could even say anything, Michael said, "What are you doing, mom!"

Anger could be heard in Michael’s tone.

He walked forward and blocked Wendy from Winnie, clearly protecting Wendy as he said, "Stop messing around. Get someone to make food for you if you’re hungry."

"Why are you still defending her, Michael?" Winnie stretched her hand to pull Michael away, but Michael refused to move.

She became enraged as she lectured Michael, "You have a fiance, and your fiance is Yonina. Yonina is even pregnant with her child, so you shouldn’t do her wrong, you know?"

"I know, relax. I won’t do Yonina wrong at all." Winnie was mentally unstable, so Michael didn’t want to say anything too mean to agitate her. Otherwise, it would be troublesome if Winnie fell ill again. "Weren’t you hungry? I’ll get someone to make some food for you, okay?"

Michael shouted, "Tilly, Mary, please make some of my mom’s favorite dishes for her."

His grandmother had already found out what happened after hearing Michael shout and the commotion in the living room.

She walked in anxiously with her walking stick.

Seeing that Winnie was around, she frowned and questioned the maids in the house, "Didn’t I get someone to watch her? Where are they? Why did they let her out?"

....

Winnie, who had calmed down a little, became enraged at Grandmother’s words.

She pointed at Grandmother and said in disbelief, "You got someone to watch me?

Mom, why did you get someone to watch me? What right do you have to do that?

Am I a criminal or a mentally unstable person that needs to be watched?"

Grandmother’s head hurt from the myriad of questions Winnie had asked.

The reason why she asked Wendy to come today was to get Michael and Wendy back together.

She knew that Winnie hadn’t liked Wendy all along, and her mental health wasn’t stable.

So, she had instructed the maids at home in the afternoon to watch Winnie and make sure that Winnie wouldn’t appear in front of Wendy before Wendy left.

As long as they didn’t meet, nothing would go wrong.

So, why is she out here now?

At this moment, a maid ran over in fear as she lowered her head and said shakily, "I’m sorry madam, I... I saw that Mrs. Lucas had fallen asleep, so I wanted to take the clothes in her room to the laundry room to get them washed.

"I hadn’t expected that when I went back, Mrs. Lucas was... was not in the room anymore.

"I had thought... thought that she wouldn’t wake up so soon as I only left for a while.

I’m sorry, madam, I didn’t do it on purpose."

Grandmother powerfully hit her walking stick against the ground. The loud thud made the whole group of maids terrified that they didn’t dare breathe too loudly.

Especially the maid who was tasked to watch Winnie.

She lowered her head even more.

"Mom, why did you get someone to watch me?" Winnie repeated her question, her eyes widened, and her expression looked dramatic.

Winnie being like this made Grandmother’s head hurt.

Grandmother glanced at Michael and Wendy, unsure of how their private talk had gone.

But looking at the time, they hadn’t talked for long.

Seeing that Grandmother had come over, Wendy decided to just bid farewell to her directly as she said, "Grandmother, I’ll take my leave first. I’ll visit you again when I have the chance."

From Wendy’s voice, Grandmother could tell that Wendy was angry.

Looked like Wendy wasn’t in a good mood.

It’s just that she didn’t know if it was due to Wendy and Michael’s conversation not going well or because of Winnie.

"Why don’t you take a walk with me in the back garden? Let’s chat for a while." She smiled at Wendy as she said, "There are many new types of flowers, so it would be nice to admire them."

"No, it’s fine. I really am busy. Goodbye, Grandmother." Wendy waved at Grandmother to bid farewell.

"Wendy... " Grandmother had wanted to say something, but she was interrupted by Winnie’s loud and angry shout, "Swear first, you can’t leave without swearing!"

Winnie still remembered to get Wendy to swear.

She knew that Winnie was mentally unstable, so she couldn’t argue with her. She just chose to ignore Winnie and turned around to leave.

But Winnie walked towards her and grabbed her hand tightly, "You can’t leave before you’ve sworn!"

Winnie kept repeating the same line.

It was as though she could only feel at ease once Wendy had sworn.

Grandmother had just come down, so she didn’t know what Winnie had wanted Wendy to swear about. She turned to look at Michael.

Michael looked at her resignedly and softly explained, "My mom demanded Wendy swear that she would never see me again before she can leave."
