Chapter 400: Donate Your Brain Since You’re Not Using It
Wendy smiled and nodded briefly. She did not say anything after that. There was not point arguing about it. She would be going back to Rheinsville City in a couple of days. She was not even sure when would be the next time she would be back in Lake City, let alone come back to the mansion.
Mrs. Lucas noticed that Wendy did not look happy. Mrs. Lucas put some food on Wendy’s plate and said cheerfully, "You have to eat more. Weight management seems to be in trend among the youngsters. Even if they are already very slim, they’re still complaining that they need to lose weight. Don’t be like one of them. It would not be worth it if you get sick from the wrong methods to lose weight."
As she spoke, she hinted to Michael with her eyes again, this time telling him to take some food for Wendy. Michael fumbled as he still dared not have any interaction with Wendy. He picked up a piece of meat and wanted to put it on Wendy’s plate, but paused in midair and decided to put it on his own plate instead.
Mrs. Lucas saw what Michael did and she was so pissed off that she kicked Michael under the table. But little did she know, that kick did not get Michael, it got Wendy instead. Although the force from the kick would not cause much of an injury, it was too sudden and Wendy was taken by surprise. She reacted with a yelp.
Seeing that Michael did not have any change in expression and Wendy looked like she was in pain, Mrs. Lucas realized that she had gotten the wrong person.
Michael immediately turned to face Wendy. Before he could say any words of concern, he heard Mrs. Lucas’s voice and he faced the front again.
"Are you okay, Wendy?" Mrs. Lucas admitted to her own mistake promptly and apologized. "Sorry Wendy. I... I was just feeling... my legs were getting a little cramped so I wanted to stretch them out. I didn’t mean to kick you. Let me check if you’re hurt."
Mrs. Lucas was about to bend down to check Wendy’s leg under the table, but Wendy stopped her and helped her sit back upright. Mrs. Lucas was not young anymore and Wendy did not want to trouble her.
"I’m fine. I was just a little surprised. It’s nothing, really," Wendy said. Just to assure Mrs. Lucas, Wendy forced a smile.
Wendy knew what was going on. She did not believe it when Mrs. Lucas said earlier that Michael wanted to go off because of work. It was obvious that Michael wanted to leave because of Wendy. It was Mrs. Lucas who stopped Michael from leaving. This kick was definitely not because of Mrs. Lucas wanting to stretch her legs. Wendy did not know what they spoke about before coming back to the dining table, but she could tell that Mrs. Lucas wanted to help them get back together. Wendy sighed.
She understood Mrs. Lucas’s wish to see them back together as a couple.
Although Wendy said she was fine, Mrs. Lucas was still a little concerned. The kick was intended for Michael, so she did not hold back.
"Let me have a look. I just want to make sure that it’s not swelling," Mrs. Lucas said, sounding troubled.
Wendy knew if she insisted otherwise, Mrs. Lucas would not be at peace. She raised her leg of her own accord. But she then remembered that she had stockings on. It wouldn’t be convenient to check with her stockings on and Wendy could not possibly take them off in front of the two of them.
She stood up and walked a few steps to set Mrs. Lucas’s mind at ease. "See, I’m really fine."
Mrs. Lucas felt a little relieved after that. But she was certainly not pleased with Michael.
...
"Wendy, if you are really not feeling well, I can get Michael to send you to the hospital for a checkup." Actually, Mrs. Lucas wasn’t really worried. Her kick might hurt for a bit but it wouldn’t cause any major damage. She was simply trying to create opportunities for Michael.
Mrs. Lucas looked at Michael. He had his head hung low, and he did not even dare to look at his grandmother. Mrs. Lucas coughed purposefully and said, "Michael, why don’t you say something?"
"I..." Michael was worried about Wendy but he was aware that the kick wouldn’t inflict any injury. Mrs. Lucas’s intention became crystal clear then.
Michael looked down slightly. In his mind, he knew he should leave Wendy alone and not disturb her current life. But he thought back on what his grandmother had told him earlier. Perhaps he could give it one last shot.
He clenched his fists and nodded. He gathered his courage and said, "Wendy, if you don’t feel well, I can accompany you to the hospital. It would be good to just have it checked. Anyway, I am free this afternoon."
"Weren’t you rushing back to the office earlier?" Wendy asked solemnly. "I am fine. I don’t think I need to go to the hospital. If I really need to, Todd can accompany me.
We shouldn’t trouble you, Mr. Lucas."
When he saw Wendy’s stoic expression and tone, the courage he managed to muster earlier dissipated. Hanging his head low again, he merely said okay.
Mrs. Lucas was irritated by the situation. Michael was not making full use of the opportunity and Wendy was trying to draw a clear line between the two of them. If this continued, their relationship would be going downhill for sure. Mrs. Lucas would not allow this to happen. She had to think of something to salvage this.
"Wendy, let’s continue our lunch." Wendy was still standing up after walking a few steps. Frankly, Wendy had lost her appetite to eat but faced with Mrs. Lucas’s passionate attitude, she sat down so as not to disappoint the older lady.
She sat at her seat and continued eating the food, which Mrs. Lucas placed on her plate, in silence. From time to time, she would also reciprocate and serve food onto Mrs. Lucas’s plate. Michael seemed like an outsider more at the table of three.
Lunch was soon over, and Wendy felt that it was time to leave. If Michael hadn’t been there, she would have stayed a little longer to chat with Mrs. Lucas. But since he was there, she began to excuse herself. "Thank you for the meal, Grandmother.
I’ll make a move first. I have something on in the afternoon. I’ll visit you again the next time I come back."
Mrs. Lucas panicked when she heard that Wendy was leaving. She said immediately, "Didn’t we just have a meal? How about resting a little longer before going on your way?
She turned to Michael and interlocked her arm with his. She said, "Michael, come and help me cut some fruits."
Turning to Wendy, Mrs. Lucas said while smiling, "Eat some fruits before you go.
We’ll be right back."
Mrs. Lucas pulled Michael into the kitchen. Margaret was in the kitchen as well. With one look from Mrs. Lucas, Margaret nodded and went out to make sure Wendy stayed seated before they got back. Being dragged into the kitchen, Michael knew what Mrs. Lucas was going to say. But he’d already lost all hope.
"What were you thinking? Michael, do you not want to get Wendy back at all?" Mrs.
Lucas was so mad that the hand holding her cane was shaking.
"Grandmother..." Michael did not know what else to say. "Maybe, let’s forget about it. As long as she is happy, it doesn’t matter if it is with me or with someone else."
...
If we were to talk about the type of love Michael had for Wendy in the past, it would be more of possessiveness.
But now, Michael just wanted to fulfill her.
As long as Wendy was happy, Michael was willing to let go.
Just like how Todd had let go back then.
"I think that you can donate your brain since you’re not using it." His grandmother whacked his head with her walking stick.
She whacked him pretty hard.
The loud thud from her hit even resonated in the kitchen.
Michael rubbed his head in pain as he said, "Grandmother... " "I don’t think that Wendy would be happy being with another man, and you and Wendy already have Leah and Jake. No matter if it’s for the both of you or my great-grandson and daughter, you better fight for it again. I know that you think that Wendy doesn’t love you, and you don’t want to force yourself on her. If that’s the case, give it a try."
"How?" Hearing that, Michael’s eyes lit up.
To be honest, Michael still loved Wendy.
It would be best for him if Wendy returned to his side.
He was just afraid that forcing himself on Wendy would be a form of pressure on her.
Seeing Michael’s expectant face, his grandmother heaved a sigh of relief. At least, Michael still cared about Wendy.
"Make her feel bad for you." A smile flashed in grandmother’s eyes.
She turned around and walked to the refrigerator to get some fruits, then passed them to Michael. "Do you know what to do?"
Michael looked at the fruits before looking at grandmother again.
Michael was clever, so he obviously understood what his grandmother was talking about.
After she saw Michael nod, she didn’t say anything else and just left with the help of her walking stick.
She had to go and hold Wendy back in case Wendy was going to leave.
She saw Wendy sitting on the sofa in the living room with a heavy expression on her face. Wendy was neither using her phone nor watching television which showed that she was uncomfortable and wanted to leave.
"Wendy." Grandmother walked towards Wendy with the walking stick and smiled as she said, "Michael said he hadn’t seen you in a very long while, so he wanted to cut you some fruits himself. He wouldn’t even let me help him."
Haven’t seen her in a very long while? Wanted to cut her some fruits himself?
Of course, Wendy didn’t believe that at all.
She and Michael had just passed by each other this afternoon, at the entrance of the hotel, so they had just seen each other.
"Want to watch television for a while?" Grandmother took the remote control and switched on the television before asking, "Is there anything you want to watch?"
"No, you can watch whatever you like. I’m fine with anything," Wendy replied with a smile.
"Then, let’s watch this. Isabel is starring in this." Grandmother put the remote control down as her smile dampened at the mention of Isabel. "That girl is always flying all around the world and rarely comes home. But she had just won some acting queen award, and she had won it with this drama."
When grandmother was speaking, her love and pride for Isabel could be heard from her tone.
She turned around and asked Wendy, "Have you seen this drama?"
Wendy shook her head. "I’m usually quite busy with work, so I rarely watch dramas."
"I understand." Grandmother sighed as she looked at Wendy sympathetically and said, "Young people like you are always busy with work but remember to take care of yourself no matter how busy you are. Don’t think that you can neglect your health just cause you’re young. Otherwise, you’ll regret it when you’re older."
Just as Wendy was about to agree, a maid rushed over hurriedly and anxiously exclaimed, "Something bad has happened."
