Chapter 366: I Will Be With You
"Yeah, that’s right. It’s evidence of what I did!" Timothy didn’t deny it.
He was already confronting Todd about what happened, so there was no need to hide it. Todd already knew what happened.
"Todd, you swore to me that you wouldn’t tell anyone about what happened and you wouldn’t investigate." Timothy looked at him and said, "You should know the consequences that come when you cross me! I said I would kill somebody, and I’d still do it."
Todd turned was scared. He turned pale and stepped backward.
"What do you mean?" Todd was shocked.
"I did everything that I possibly could to protect you," said Timothy, "Did you know that HG’s real boss was extremely cruel? He wanted to kill you. I told him that you wouldn’t say anything and that you had no evidence. For you, I vouch for him with my life. How do you think you’ve been able to live so long while knowing such a big secret? And yet you keep investigating what happened? Todd, do you have any idea what you’re forcing me to do?"
"You have completely misunderstood what happened. I was with Corrine last night, and you can ask her about it. She can be my witness." Todd tried very hard to explain.
"What if you and Corrine are accomplices?" Timothy had first suspected Todd, but he also suspected Wendy. "It’s possible that you asked Corrine to help you cheat me and provide you with an alibi. She is closer to you than me."
Wendy was very useful to him, so he could not break his relationship with her easily.
Wendy had no reason to continue to investigate what had happened.
"So you insist that it was me, do you?" Todd shook his head disappointedly and said, "Mentor if I wanted to keep investigating what happened, why would I wait until now? I would have started my investigation three years ago when you promised to give me the HG shares. I’ve been out of HG for so long. Why would I investigate it now when I could have investigated it before?"
"I’m still trying to figure that out. Why on earth would you break your promise after three years?" Timothy asked.
"I never broke my promise, and I haven’t investigated. I didn’t go into your office last night." Todd looked extremely resigned, "How can I make you believe me?"
Todd bowed his head and thought for a while. He tried his best to explain what happened with the excuse that he and Wendy had agreed on the night before, "First of all, I have no reason to keep investigating. I know that you hired someone to murder me. I cherish my life, that’s why I left HG. Secondly, you don’t need to suspect that Corrine and I are accomplices. If we were accomplices, then she would already know what kind of person you are. Do you think that a person like Corinne would accept the HG shares under these circumstances? She broke up with Michael Lucas and has two kids to take care of. Don’t you think she would be afraid of dying?
If I asked Corrine to help me cheat you, she would ask me why. Why would she help me cheat you if she didn’t have a good reason?"
Todd had already prepared his excuses. There wouldn’t be any loopholes.
After all, Timothy did not know that Wendy and he knew the real boss of HG was Christian Lucas. He did not know that they were already aware of many things either.
Timothy should not think too much into the fact that Wendy risked her life to stay HG. After all, everyone knew that she had broken up with Michael, and she did help to generate significant profits for HG.
Timothy remained silent for a long time after Todd’s explanation. He acknowledged that what Todd said was reasonable. However, he could not think of anyone else. Not many people knew everything about HG.
Timothy looked into Todd’s eyes and asked, "Who else could it be if it were not you?’ Todd felt relieved at Timothy’s question. It meant that Timothy had not found any evidence yet. He was only suspicious at this point.
"Is it true that nobody else knows about this except me?" Todd analyzed, "Is it likely that your partner wants to abandon you after he gets what he wants? Or maybe the person who came into the office last night did not intend to look for any evidence, or did not even know about the existence of the evidence. Perhaps he just wanted to steal some business secrets and then found your safe accidentally. Maybe he thought there was something important inside so he made two attempts to input the password."
"The power went out for only several minutes in total. If it were not someone who was familiar with my office, how could he walk into my lounge and find the lock to my safe in such a short time?" Timothy was not led astray by Todd. He continued, "The person who came in last night must be very familiar with my office and know that I have a safe! Todd, no matter what you say, you are the prime suspect."
"Mentor, I did not expect that you have such little faith in me." Todd shook his head, looking disappointed. "Since you think it must be me, then whatever I say will be meaningless.
"But you can ask someone to look into the fingerprints on the safe. Didn’t you mention that someone touched your safe? If my fingerprints are on it, then I will have nothing to say."
Todd and Wendy had made all preparations before they came in last night. They had gloves and shoe covers. Apart from the security guard, who was a witness, there could not be any other physical evidence.
"I will certainly do so." Timothy walked to the desk phone and called a number. He commanded, "Let them in."
Very soon, several people came in with something in their hands.
Timothy said coldly, "Leave your fingerprints."
Todd sighed. He gave a sardonic smile and walked towards them. Obliging to their request, Todd left all of his ten fingerprints behind.
"Todd, I hope that I won’t find any evidence against you." Timothy shook his head and said, "You’re the first apprentice that’s close to me and I’ve put so much effort into grooming you. I do not want to hurt you someday..."
Timothy did favor Todd. Otherwise, he would not have let him go three years ago.
He really hoped that Todd was not involved in this matter.
"Mentor, I’ve told you that I’ve got nothing to do with this matter, but you insist on suspecting me." Todd sighed," Alright, there’s no point continuing this conversation.
If you really think that it’s me, I’ve no idea what else to say."
Timothy supported himself with on the table with his arm. His expression was grim.
He waved the other arm and said, "You can go now."
Todd said nothing and left the office. He realized that there was sweat all over his back. A wave of fear washed over him. He closed his eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, and then left HG quickly.
To his surprise, he saw Wendy waiting for him in front of the door when he arrived home. He was not expecting to see her.
"Why are you here?" asked Todd.
He took out the keys and unlocked the door, then made a gesture to welcome Wendy into his home.
Wendy entered and closed the door.
"I am worried about you," said Wendy. "It’s easy for me to deceive Mentor. After all, Mentor doesn’t have full knowledge of my background and he wouldn’t dare to sever ties with me. But it’s different for you. You know his secrets. Even though there isn’t any evidence, Mentor will surely think that it was you."
"You’re right, Mentor does think that it was me," Todd said as he poured two cups of water. He handed one to Wendy. Then he downed everything in his cup.
Setting the cup down, Todd said, "But you can rest assured. For now, Mentor doesn’t have any evidence. He’s collected my fingerprints earlier on. But we were well prepared, so we did not leave any fingerprints behind."
"He didn’t ask for my fingerprints though," said Wendy.
"That’s not unusual. He cannot sever ties with you before figuring out everything.
After all, HG totally relies on you now," said Todd. "You could simply pretend to be upset for several days. Mentor will probably apologize to you and try to appease you in a day or two. Anyway, it’ll be fine as long as he doesn’t suspect you."
"I’m..."
Seeing that Wendy wanted to say sorry again, he immediately interrupted her, "I don’t want to hear those words anymore."
"If Mentor does find some evidence, I will step forward and tell him that I forced you into this," Wendy said seriously. "We know what Mentor can be capable of. I cannot let you lose your life because of this. I will be with you if this really happens."
Todd laughed upon hearing this. It was genuine laughter.
"So you want to die with me?" asked Todd "I’m not joking with you." Wendy was the one who had brought Todd into this, so she must shoulder the consequences. If she could not save Todd, then she would die with him.
"Quit being pessimistic. It’s impossible for Mentor to get hold of any evidence." Todd did not dare challenge her on this matter, seeing that she was very serious about it.
"I know we were very cautious, and we didn’t leave any trace behind. But there was a witness, the head of the security guards, isn’t it?" Wendy said worriedly. "We cannot be sure that Mentor will not find out about him."
"Rest assured he wouldn’t dare to say anything."
"Wouldn’t dare?" Wendy frowned upon hearing Todd’s choice of words.
Todd looked away and lowered his head. It seemed like he dared not meet Wendy’s gaze.
"Todd, what do you mean he wouldn’t dare?" Wendy asked again.
"It’s nothing. Anyway, you don’t need to worry, I will take care of it," Todd smiled lightly as usual.
Wendy felt that Todd was hiding something from her. She stood up and looked at Todd, frowning as she asked, "Is there something that you cannot tell me?"
