Chapter 360: Wait For My Update

What Todd said replayed in Wendy’s head over and over again.

She knew that Todd liked her, but she had never expected his feelings for her were so deep.

Wendy was perfectly aware of what kind of a person Todd was.

It had been years, and Todd had never told anyone about Mr. Woods. Yet, he told her everything on that day.

He was even willing to side with her and fight against his mentor who guided him in his career.

Wendy realized that it was a favor that she couldn’t pay back.

When Wendy was driving, there were so many times when she wanted to thank Todd and apologize.

However, she thought the two phrases were simply words of courtesy, and it was cruel to him.

So, she didn’t say anything in the end.

It was really quiet in the car. It was so quiet that Wendy could hear her heartbeat.

She finally arrived at Todd’s place.

She parked the car in the garage, and then she unbuckled her seat belt and got out of the car.

Wendy stood in front of the car. She looked at Todd and said softly, "Rest well. Good night..."

"Let me send you back. I’m worried for you going back on your own," Todd said.

"It’s not far. It will only take me less than 15 minutes to reach home." Wendy’s house was very close to Todd’s.

"Let me walk you..." Todd offered, smiling. He muttered softly, "I might not have much chance in the future."

"What?" Wendy didn’t hear what he said.

Todd shook his head and said, "Nothing. I had too much to eat tonight. I’ll take a walk to help digest the food. Let’s go."

On the way back, they were still quiet.

Wendy didn’t know what to say, and the same went to Todd.

Ten minutes passed quickly. Todd saw that they were about to reach Wendy’s house. He thought to himself regrettably as to why the route back to her house wasn’t farther.

"Goodbye...," Wendy told Todd.

Todd raised his hand and waved. He smiled sweetly at her. "I’m going to say the same thing. Call me if you need any help. And before this comes to an end, we should still pretend to be a couple, shouldn’t we? I will come and pick you up tomorrow morning. Tell me what you want for breakfast. I will make it for you."

The remark of pretending to be a couple was actually depressing to Todd.

He knew all along that Wendy didn’t love him.

There were times when Wendy wanted to make it clear to him, but he purposely cut her off. He didn’t want her to wake him up from his dream.

However, no matter how great the dream was, he had to open his eyes.

"Thank you, Todd," Wendy said sincerely. She really meant to express her appreciation as he did help her a lot.

Wendy stood straight and bowed at Todd to express her gratitude.

But such a formal gesture made Todd even more upset.

Todd waved exaggeratedly. Then, he didn’t wait for Wendy to turn before he walked away to leave.

Wendy watched Todd’s figure until it disappeared.

At the very moment Todd turned his back at Wendy, his smile faded slowly.

It was replaced with pain across his chest.

Todd tried to comfort himself. This had not ended yet.

Wasn’t Wendy his girlfriend before this?

Even though it was for show, she still was his girlfriend, wasn’t she?

Maybe, there was a slight possibility that Wendy really did fell in love with him during that time...

’As long as there’s a possibility... Even if there’s only a very small chance...’

...

On the second day, Todd came to pick Wendy up for work as usual.

He came really early. He even prepared Wendy her favorite breakfast.

Zen saw the scrumptious breakfast and commented, "Mr. Lewis is really the ideal boyfriend."

Zen saw that Wendy was still getting ready, so she asked Todd softly, "Any progress last night?"

To Zen, Todd was a good choice for Wendy.

He was a good-looking bachelor, wealthy, and ran his own company.

Most importantly, he was loyal to Wendy.

Such a man was hard to come by.

Then again, Zen had her selfish motive too.

To her, the estrangement between Wendy and Michael had gone worse that it was quite impossible for them to reconcile.

Plus, if Wendy were to be with Todd, Christian had to put off what he had in mind.

Hence, Zen was more than willing to bring the two of them together.

Zen added vaguely, "You came home really late last night."

Todd hung his head low while he scooped a bowl of porridge for Wendy. He smiled, replying softly, "It was the first time Corrine invited me out for dinner last night."

His reply was rather vague too.

Zen had an ’I totally understand’ look on her face, and her smile grew wider.

Then, Jake and Leah came out of the washroom and joined them.

"Uncle Todd, was Mommy with you last night? I waited until bedtime last night, but I didn’t see Mommy came back." Leah sounded like she was complaining.

Different from Leah, Jake looked happy about it.

He had always wished for his mom to be with Uncle Todd.

He couldn’t be bothered if he lost his shoddy dad.

Leah saw Todd nod, and she continued, "Uncle Todd, where did you go last night? Is it so fun that you came back so late? Can you bring me and Jack with you when you go again next time?"

Leah blinked her big eyes, asking Todd adorably.

Jake covered Leah’s mouth. "Adults have their own fun. We’re children. We shouldn’t interrupt them."

Leah pulled Jake’s hand off and said, "But Mommy and Uncle Todd used to bring us with them all the time. Why can’t they bring us anymore?"

Jake didn’t know how to it explain to Leah.

Although he understood, Leah couldn’t as she was too young.

Plus, if Leah were to find out Todd and Wendy were in a romantic relationship and Todd might possibly become their new dad, Jake reckoned that Leah wouldn’t be happy about it.

She always had Michael in her thoughts.

Wendy then walked out of the washroom and saw Jake and Leah bantering playfully. She smiled at them as she sat down. She asked, "What are you talking about?"

Zen coughed softly as she helped herself with the porridge. "Mr. Lewis is good at cooking. Thanks to Wendy, I get to have some too."

Wendy looked at Zen and then at Todd. Then, she turned to look at the two children.

Leah opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but Jake offered her a bun and said, "Here. Your favorite."

Leah took the bun and immediately forgot what she wanted to say. Instead, she started eating the bun happily.

Wendy furrowed her brows. ’Why is everyone behaving so strangely today?’

"Come and eat. Then, we shall head to work," Todd said, putting a bowl of porridge in front of Wendy.

Zess sent the two children to kindergarten after they were done with breakfast.

Wendy, Todd, and Zen headed to the office for work.

The difference from before was that Todd didn’t leave right after sending Wendy to the office. He said, "I don’t have any meeting in the morning today. Let’s go and chill at your office for a bit."

Needless to say, Wendy nodded in agreement.

They arrived at the office together, and Zen conscientiously brought in two cups of freshly brewed coffee.

Then, she returned to her own desk to work.

Wendy took a glance at Zen as she walked away. Then, she looked at the door as she asked with a low voice, "Is there something you’d like to talk about?"

Todd nodded. He then glanced at the door too. He made sure that no one was within earshot before he answered softly, "Are you planning to take a look in Mr. Woods’s office?"

Todd mentioned the safe to Wendy the night before. Judging from Wendy’s character, she probably would find an opportunity to sneak in.

The safe was located in the break room within Mr. Woods’s office. Wendy had no valid reason to enter Timothy’s break room.

In short, her only choice was to sneak in.

Wendy’s face grew solemn as she nodded.

She did plan to head in and take a look.

It would be great if she could find any evidence.

Of course, she was well aware that it wouldn’t be that easy for her to find a piece of evidence.

"I know you’re going to take the risk," Todd said, his voice even lower. He moved closer to Wendy and whispered, "But you should know that Mr. Woods securely hid the evidence, and you can’t retrieve them easily. On the contrary, you might expose yourself."

"But I have to try," Wendy replied seriously.

Todd had expected this. He kept quiet for a while before he asked, "What’s your plan?"

"I’m thinking of sneaking in to take a look after working hours, when Mr. Woods and his secretary have left the office," Wendy explained.

"Then?"

"Then?" Wendy furrowed her brows, puzzled.

Todd clarified, "Are you just going to sneak in so openly? Don’t you know Mr. Woods’s office is equipped with surveillance cameras? Although no one would check the footage if nothing happened... But what if someone noticed you? Or what if something happened and Mr. Woods suddenly asked for footage of his office? Wouldn’t you be exposed then?"

Wendy thought about this before, but she didn’t have any better way.

Looking at Wendy frowning, Todd knew that this was a do or die for her. He continued, "I told you that I will help you. As I failed to stop you, I can only help you."

"Todd, are you sure you really wanted to help me?" Wendy initially wished for Todd to help her, but she couldn’t endure his kindness.

What could she do to return Todd’s favor?

Todd nodded. "I worked in HG for a few years. Although I have started my own company, I still have some connections here. I will take care of the surveillance system before working hours end. Then, I will go with you to Mr. Woods’s office."

"It’s okay. You can just help me take care of the surveillance. I will go to Mr. Woods’s office on my own. Just let me know the exact location of the safe. If I were to be exposed, I couldn’t drag you down with me," Wendy said, forcing a smile on her face.

Todd didn’t bother Wendy further about it but replied, "The safe is in the break room. I have no idea where its exact location is. I didn’t see the safe back then. After all, I was sitting on the sofa in his office. Regardless, just wait for my update today."
