Chapter 311: You’ve Won
Christian definitely had not gone to Wendy’s room and told her what she wanted to know out of the goodness of his heart.
Wendy didn’t even know if the room number he had given them was the correct one.
Todd knew that in her heart, Wendy really wanted to look for Michael and talk things through.
Regardless of what the truth really was, they had to discuss the matter peacefully.
Todd thought about it before he said, "Corrine, I will go to Room 1201 to take a look first. If Michael is really there, then you can come over."
"It might be a trap set by Christian. You better not go." Wendy was worried about Todd’s safety.
The matter had nothing to do with Todd, and she did not want him to be implicated.
"What about you?" Todd asked. "Do you intend to go?"
"I..." Wendy swallowed. There was a long pause before she said, "I don’t know."
"Since you have no idea, let me decide for you," Todd suggested. "You take a rest while I go over to Room 1201. Don’t worry, I’m just taking a look to see if Michael is really there, then I will come back right away."
With that, Todd left the room.
"Todd..." Wendy called out after him, "Christian’s words are not to be trusted. There’s no need for you to go."
"But you really want to talk to Michael, don’t you?" Todd regarded Wendy with a smile.
"I will go with you." Wendy could not let Todd go alone. What if it was a trap?
Christian was capable of anything.
Todd wanted to protest when he saw Wendy getting off the bed, but held himself back when he caught sight of her determined expression.
It was fine. They could go together. In the event anything unexpected happened, he would not be alone.
Wendy saw the bunch of lilies in the vase just as she was about to leave the room after putting on her shoes.
She reached out and threw the flowers away before walking out.
Room 1201 in the next building was a VIP room.
With Michael’s social status, he would not be in an ordinary ward.
Furthermore, he was quite seriously injured. He had not expected everything to go so smoothly.
Michael was indeed in room 1201.
Christian had really gone to her room just to tell her Michael’s room number.
However, when Wendy arrived at the doorway to his room, she stood frozen, unable to take even one step into the room.
She saw Yonina in the room with Michael.
Yonina had a bowl of soup in one hand and a spoon in the other. She blew gently on a spoonful of soup to cool it before trying to feed it to Michael.
Michael turned his head away and protested weakly, "No need, I can feed myself."
Michael wanted to keep his distance from Yonina.
Yonina smiled but did not do as Michael said. She pushed the spoon into his mouth and said, "Michael, you’d better cooperate and marry me. If Wendy had not returned, we would have gotten married long ago. Since everyone knows about us now, we might as well take the opportunity and get married. Don’t you think that’s a good idea?"
Michael frowned at Yonina’s words. "There’s only the two of us here..."
Before he could finish talking, Yonina leaned close as she fed him another spoonful of soup and whispered, "Christian is watching us."
Michael immediately understood.
That’s right. It wouldn’t be hard for Christian to set up surveillance in the room while he was injured and unconscious.
From Wendy’s viewpoint outside the room, what she saw was Yonina leaning in to kiss Michael. Worse, Michael did not seem to have any objections.
She blinked as she held her hand up to her mouth in shock. She was afraid that she might cry out loud enough for them to hear.
"I know you have feelings for Wendy Stewart," Yonina said as she continued to feed Michael the soup. "She’s the mother of your two children after all. It’s natural that you feel attached to her. However, Michael, you can’t have everything."
"You’re probably in on everything that happened last night," Michael replied. "Don’t fool yourself into believing your own lies."
"Whether I believe them or not is not important. What’s important is that everyone else believes them." Yonina continued, "Michael, I’ve always liked you. Look, I’m the CEO of Collins Group and a perfect match for you in terms of social status. Am I not good enough for you?
"If you want children, we can have children of our own in the future too.
"Do you think Wendy will be able to forgive you after what happened last night? If she could, she wouldn’t have stabbed you.
"Life is short, why get so hung up on one person?
"Besides, your mother likes me. She hasn’t been well, and her condition will stabilize if you marry me.
"The Collins Group might be on the brink of bankruptcy now, but we have been in business for so many years. Our foundation is solid.
"Our marriage will revive the Collins Group and boost MC.
"I know you’re at war with Christian. Marry me and you will be able to fulfill your aim sooner with Collin Group’s help.
"See, no matter which way you look at it, I’m your best choice for a marriage partner."
Michael had remained silent throughout.
Yonina noticed his reticence and continued, "Don’t worry. I will love you more than Wendy does."
As she spoke, she reached out and caressed Michael’s cheek.
By now, neither Wendy nor Todd could bear to watch anymore.
"These two people are really too much!" Shaking his fist angrily, Todd stomped into the room.
Michael was surprised to see Todd. He glanced behind him and saw that Wendy had come too.
When Yonina saw Todd approaching them furiously, she immediately stood between him and Michael. Her expression long-suffering and devoted, she pleaded, "Blame it all on me! If you are here to take revenge for Wendy, I can assure you, Michael was also one of the victims yesterday!"
Wendy’s expression was obviously jealous when she saw Yonina in front of Michael’s bed.
Some other woman was protecting her husband?
She laughed bitterly.
She approached the bed and said quietly to Michael, "May I speak with you in private?"
Before Michael could reply, Yonina exclaimed, "Of course not! Michael is so seriously injured. What if you get angry and stab him again like you did yesterday? How can I leave him alone with you?"
From an outsider’s point of view, Wendy attacked Michael.
To Wendy, Yonina’s worry was legitimate. After all, Michael and Yonina were together now.
"Yonina!" Speaking to Yonina, Michael demanded, "Leave us."
"Michael..." Yonina knew Michael would definitely agree to Wendy’s request as he had been worried about her.
However, she was afraid that Michael would ignore everything else when he saw Wendy’s tears. He did have a soft spot for her after all.
Walking to Michael’s bedside, Yonina fussed with the pillows he was propped up upon and whispered in his ear, "If you don’t want anything bad to happen to Wendy, follow the plan."
With that, she turned and left the room with Todd.
There were only Wendy and Michael left in the room.
The atmosphere was a little strained and neither wanted to be the first to speak.
Michael did not know what to say. Should he try to explain?
For Wendy’s sake, he could not tell her the truth. She would be in danger if she got implicated. He did not want her to get involved.
Furthermore, Christian had the room under surveillance.
It would be safer for Wendy if he allowed Christian’s plan to run its course.
If Christian’s plan failed this time, who knew what he would do to them?
Michael was not afraid for himself, but he worried about Wendy.
Everything Michael had done to her five years ago, as well as the recent accident, weighed heavily on Michael’s mind.
At this point, Wendy’s safety was paramount. Even if he had to make her sad, he would rather her be safe.
In the end, Wendy spoke first," Tell me, what was with the stabbing? Others might not know, but you were right there, you must know. I’m sure I did not stab you yesterday. Did you impale yourself on the knife in my hand?"
"Wendy, I know you are angry, but you shouldn’t have done that." Michael shook his head disappointedly. "I know you have gotten your memories back, and now you hate me for everything that happened five years ago. I did hand you the knife and ask you to stab me to assuage your anger. However, I did not expect you to really do it. You stabbed not only my flesh, but my heart as well..."
"What are you saying?" Wendy had not expected that Michael would deny it.
"Michael, is everything Yonina said true? You don’t love me at all and are only with me because you feel guilty? Are you taking this opportunity to cut all ties with me?"
Wendy felt her chest growing painfully tighter with every word.
She had told herself before coming that she would not cry no matter what.
However, tears were now rolling uncontrollably down her cheeks.
"Wendy, you will not believe anything I say now, right?" Devastated, Michael clutched at his chest with his hand. "We have been married for so many years, but you only believe what you see. You even attempted to kill me in a fit of anger."
"It was obviously, obviously..." Wendy was so riled up by Michael’s words that she could not speak properly.
It was obviously not her.
Wendy shook her head and laughed self-deprecatingly. Tears streaming down her face, Wendy said, "Michael Lucas, you’re good. With that stab, you’ve managed to assuage your own guilt and make me out to be a heartless woman. Was that something you’ve always wanted to do but didn’t have the chance to?"
Gritting his teeth against the pain from the wound in his chest, Michael got off the bed. He picked up a paring knife from the plate of fruit that was on the small table next to his bed and again stood in front of Wendy.
"Was once not enough? I admit I owe you. If you want to stab me a few more times, go ahead."
Wendy stared at the knife Michael proffered.
This was her husband.
Wendy took a deep breath and reached out for the paring knife.
She pointed the knife at Michael’s chest right over the previous wound, her eyes filled with anger and hopelessness. "Since you’re insisting that I’m the one who stabbed you, I might as well make it true!"
Clutching the paring knife tightly in her hands, Wendy really wanted to pierce his heart.
However, just as the tip of the knife cut through his bandage, she realized she could not do it.
Throwing the paring knife onto the ground, she slumped in defeat. Laughing morosely through her tears, she said, "Michael Lucas, you’ve won."
