Chapter 310: Weak Spot

[Damn! In that case, Michael doesn’t love Wendy at all! Since Michael and Yonina used to be a couple, it’s only natural that Michael would be unhappy now that Christian is marrying Yonina.] 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

[What I know is, Yonina said that Wendy Stewart and Corrine Swift are two different people. That means Wendy Stewart legally died five years ago, and in the eyes of the law, Corrine Swift is not related to Michael Lucas in any way.]

[This is too much. The gossip in the business world is even more exciting than in the entertainment industry!]

[Haha! Mr. Lucas’s public persona is completely trashed.]

[Does anyone know what really happened? Perhaps it was Wendy Stewart who threatened Michael Lucas after she returned. Why else would Michael have gone back to her?]

[Regardless of the reason, the entire thing had turned into a debacle because Michael had been caught with Yonina. It was such a big event yesterday. How could the two of them meet clandestinely, in the same hotel where the event was held, to boot? Even if he and Wendy were not legally married, it is not appropriate for him to be frolicking around with somebody else’s fiance on her engagement day!

Anyway, Michael Lucas’s public image is totally ruined.]

...

Wendy browsed the tweets on Twitter for a long time.

Almost all the trending tags and popular tweets were about the scandal.

The elder brother had crashed his younger brother’s engagement party and stolen his fiance.

What a joke.

Todd saw Wendy alternating between tears and laughter as she browsed the posts and decided it might be better to take the phone away from her.

"You should take a break." Todd put Wendy’s phone aside after locking the screen.

"I’ll buy you some breakfast. What do you feel like eating?"

Wendy did not have any appetite at all. She closed her eyes and muttered, "Anything will do."

Todd nodded and left.

However, he was still worried about her, so he got a nurse to watch over her while he was gone.

Soon, he returned with some food.

Wendy had just regained consciousness, and he thought that it would be better if she got something light.

Todd bought her some chicken soup.

Wendy was about to say she was not hungry, but Todd seemed to know what was on her mind. "Don’t forget the children are at home waiting for you. Look at yourself.

You’re as pale as death. Are you going to go home to them looking like this?"

The children were Wendy’s weak spot. At the mention of them, she took the bowl from Todd and started drinking.

Spoonful after spoonful, she drank the soup hastily.

Todd was taken aback and cried out a warning, "Careful! It’s hot!"

This was a freshly bought bowl of takeaway soup, and it was steaming hot. Yet, Wendy was having spoonfuls of it into her mouth. It seemed she was unaware of how hot it was.

Seeing no response from Wendy after the reminder, Todd took the bowl of soup away from her. Her lips were already red and beginning to swell. It was a good thing the soup had cooled down a little on the trip back and was no longer hot enough to scald.

Todd was heartbroken.

He lifted a spoon of soup and blew upon it until it cooled down somewhat before feeding it to Wendy.

It was a good thing Wendy was being cooperative. She would open her mouth once the spoon was in front of her. However, she did not seem to have any sense of fullness and simply continued to take whatever Todd fed her.

After a bowlful, she remained motionless, staring into thin air.

Sighing, Tod stopped feeding her.

"Corrine, please don’t do this." Todd put down the soup bowl and looked at Wendy worriedly. "How can I leave you here alone if you continue being like this?"

Todd was supposed to return to Rheinsville City that day. However, after Wendy’s fainting episode, there was no way he would leave her alone here.

He had a lot of work waiting for him at Lewis Design Company. However, he had to stay with Wendy for now. He would leave when her mental state had stabilized.

"Corrine..." Todd chewed his lip and hesitated before deciding to broach the topic with Wendy. It was better than letting her stew in uncertainty and despair. "I mulled over everything that happened last night, and there were some suspicious points."

Glancing at Wendy, Todd saw that she had not refuted him. That meant she was listening.

He continued, "It’s like this. See, an ordinary person would not attempt to bed Yonina under those circumstances. Even though Michael and Christian are at odds, Michael would never get back with Yonina under such trying circumstances.

"Don’t you think the timing is just too coincidental? You happened to chance upon them just as you went upstairs? Michael claimed to have been drugged. Perhaps he was telling the truth.

"I feel the whole incident might have been engineered by Christian and Yonina," Todd said his piece and stopped. Silence ensued.

Everything that Todd said had occurred to Wendy too. She had replayed the events of the previous night over and over again in her mind.

"But Michael admitted himself that he slept with Yonina." Disappointment filled Wendy’s eyes. "Even if he had been set up, what can I do? Furthermore, I think Yonina was right. She would have married him if I hadn’t shown up. Michael might just be feeling guilty towards me."

"Michael doesn’t seem like a man who will choose to be with you because he feels guilty. Besides, guilt can be assuaged by many other means. He didn’t have to stay with you for such a long time," Todd continued to analyze the situation. "Anyway, I feel there are just too many points that don’t match up. You’d better think through every detail carefully. Don’t be deceived by appearances."

Todd’s words reminded Wendy of the stab she had given Michael.

She frowned as she looked at Todd. "Todd, would you believe me if I told you I wasn’t the one who stabbed Michael last night?"

Wendy had said the same thing yesterday.

However, she was agitated yesterday, and Todd had not paid much notice to her. He had gone along with whatever she said in an attempt to placate her.

Now that she was reiterating the fact, his brows furrowed, confused.

"Michael was holding my hands when the knife pierced him," Wendy recalled yesterday’s events. "It’s true I was furious yesterday. There was an instant when I really wanted to stab him to make myself feel better. But I didn’t. I’m sure I didn’t do it."

"If that’s the case, things are even more convoluted than I thought," Todd mused.

"Don’t be too pessimistic. Perhaps you should look for Michael, have a good talk with him."

Wendy shook her head slowly at his words. She did not have the courage to do so.

Besides, so what if something was off? Even if Michael was telling the truth and he had been drugged, what difference would that make?

She had seen Michael and Yonina in the same bed. Michael had even admitted to it.

She could not put that behind her. Nothing would change even if she spoke to him again.

Todd felt his heart ache as he looked at Wendy shaking her head slowly, her face devoid of color.

Sighing, Todd said, "Michael is at this hospital too. If you want to visit him, I can help find out what room he is in."

"That won’t be necessary," Wendy replied.

"Corrine, don’t you want to see him?" Todd could see that Wendy was speaking against her conscience.

She did not want to see Michael not because she had given up on him, but because she did not have the courage to do so.

After all, there was so much that did not add up. There was no way Wendy would give up before getting to the bottom of things.

"I..." Wendy clenched the bedsheet under her tightly.

Her fists were so tightly clenched that the veins were clearly visible, but she did not seem to notice.

"I’ll ask about it. Whether you want to go or not is up to you." With that, Todd stood up and walked out of the room.

Unexpectedly, Todd did not manage to find out Michael’s room number. He had checked with the administrative offices and the nurses, but no one would tell him.

Standing in front of Wendy, he complained, "Someone must have prevented the news from getting out. I asked everyone I could, but no one would tell me his room number.

"Michael was an influential person. It was normal for such information to be withheld.

"If his room number was made known, the reporters would probably crowd around it."

Wendy felt inexplicably uncast at the news.

She lowered her head and shook it. In the end, she had become an outsider.

Her husband had been hospitalized, and she didn’t even know which room he was in.

What a joke.

"Wendy..." A figure appeared outside her door.

In his hands was a bouquet of lilies.

Wendy looked up at the familiar voice.

Christian calmly entered her room and slotted the flowers in his hands into a vase.

He was smiling as usual.

"Why are you here?" Wendy was not inclined to be polite to him. She spoke coldly, "You’re not welcome here."

Christian didn’t get angry. Instead, he smiled and said, "I came with information for you."

Glancing at Todd, he asked, "Don’t you want to know which room my brother is in?"

"What we want has nothing to do with you," Wendy said flatly.

"My brother is in Room 1201." Christian pointed to the building block opposite theirs and said, "Over there, on the 12th floor."

"Christian, were you behind yesterday’s events?" Wendy looked up at Christian, her eyes burning with hate and disgust.

Now that Wendy had regained her lost memories, she naturally remembered everything that Christian had done in the past.

He was a very vicious man.

What happened the night before was indeed strange, and the mastermind was most likely to be Christian.

"Wendy, you need proof if you’re going to accuse someone," Christian replied calmly. "Besides, isn’t what you see with your own eyes the most important?"

What she had seen was Michael and Yonina sleeping together.

Christian knew well what her sore spots were.

Todd had enough and moved to push Christian out of the room. "You’re not welcome here. Leave."

Christian pushed Todd’s hand away from him and retreated a few steps.

However, he did not try to stay. Smiling, he waved at Wendy and said, "Then, Wendy, I’ll see you around."

Coldly, Wendy stared at Christian’s back as he left the room. She closed her eyes and did not say anything more.

Christian must have found out where she was when Todd went around asking about Michael’s room earlier.
