Chapter 268: Let’s Celebrate Mommy’s Birthday
When Wendy woke up, it was after 4:00 pm.
She sat up straight and looked at the time. Then her eyes widened, and she looked around. Her consciousness was slowly returning.
She had fallen asleep on the sofa, and had slept for so long?
She couldn’t finish her design today!
"You’re awake, huh?" Todd asked as he sat by and saw Wendy awake.
Wendy said, "Why didn’t you wake me up?"
Wendy reached up and smacked her forehead.
Todd said, "I called you, but you were too deep asleep and didn’t wake up." Todd lied and said, "I figured you wouldn’t sleep long, so I’d let you take a nap."
Wendy shook her head to clear it a bit, then stood up and said, "Sorry to keep you from going to work."
Wendy felt a little guilty that Todd was here with her and not at the office.
Todd said, "It’s okay, I’m not too busy this afternoon." Todd followed Wendy out the door.
It was already five o’clock when Wendy returned to the office. According to the normal working hours, it would be the end of work in another hour.
Wendy looked at the day’s work progress and was a little anxious.
After returning to the office, Wendy closed the door and instructed her assistant that no one should disturb her. Wendy drew the design until midnight.
Wendy only fell asleep on her desk when she couldn’t stay up any longer. Another hectic few days passed.
Wendy came to the office early in the morning, looked at the calendar on her desk, picked up a pen and drew a red circle.
It was one day closer to her return to Lake City.
After the evening meeting, it was already nine o’clock. Wendy was going to add a shift, but the phone rang.
When she saw that it was Michael calling, Wendy panicked. She looked at herself in the mirror and saw that she didn’t look too good.
Then she hung up the phone and sent a text message saying, "I’m out running, so I can’t answer the phone. I’ll call you back later."
Looking at the papers and drawings on the table, Wendy sighed. Then, she turned off her computer and got up to leave the office.
When Michael called, he would definitely ask her to turn on the video again.
If she was still at the office at this hour, he would worry about her. So, Wendy had to go back early today.
As soon as she got home, Wendy put on her makeup as fast as she could to cover up the dark circles under her eyes. Then, Wendy took the initiative to send a video call.
The video was quickly connected, and on the small phone screen, three faces were displayed.
Michael held the phone away from him, and Leah sat on his lap with a smile on her face and waved at Wendy as she said, "Mummy, you were running?"
Wendy said, "Yeah, I ran downstairs for a bit." Wendy waved at the three of them and smiled as she said, "You haven’t gone to school today?"
"Mummy, it’s Saturday, so my brother and I don’t have school," Leah said.
Wendy said, "Oh yeah, Mummy forgot." Wendy reached up and patted her head.
"Your complexion doesn’t seem very well." Michael looked closely at Wendy in the video.
She said she had just returned from a run, but her face was not the slightest bit flushed.
Usually, after exercise, the body would be somewhat flushed.
Wendy’s skin was relatively fair, so her face would appear even rosier after exercise.
In the video, Wendy didn’t show any signs of exercising.
Michael’s words made Wendy’s heart skip a beat.
She soon started smiling again as she touched her face and said, "Maybe the lighting here is bad. It’s nighttime over here, so I guess it’s kinda dim."
However, her words didn’t convince him.
She quickly changed the topic and asked Leah and Jake with a big smile, "What did you two learn in school recently?"
"Jake is too clever, so he understands everything the teacher says...." Leah waved her arms about and pouted in annoyance. "But I can’t. I learn more slowly."
"Leah’s been really good too!" Michael consoled her and said, "If you compare your speed of learning with the other children besides your brother, aren’t you faster than the rest?"
"Oh! You’re right!" Leah started smiling again.
"We have a few classmates who simply can’t get it no matter how many times the teacher explains it..."
Even though they could only communicate through a video call with Wendy, the four of them had fun chatting.
Wendy talked with them while lying on the couch and felt a great warmth fill her heart.
The three of them were her motivation to work hard.
As their conversation went on, Wendy suddenly dozed off and her phone eventually fell onto the couch beside her.
Michael frowned slightly when he realized that Wendy must have fallen asleep.
Leah started yelling into the phone, "Mommy! Mommy!"
Jake clamped a hand over her mouth and whispered, "Mommy must be really tired.
Let’s let her rest."
Michael hung up and put his phone aside. The suspicions in his heart grew even stronger.
She had refused to do a video call over the past few days, and when she finally agreed to one today, she claimed that she had taken a jog earlier. However, she didn’t look like she had just gone for a jog.
And now, she had actually fallen asleep on a call with them.
"Daddy..." Jake frowned and turned to Michael as he said worriedly, "I feel that Mommy must be really, really tired recently but doesn’t want us to worry, so she didn’t mention anything about it."
"You think so too?" Michael reached out to tousle Jake’s hair. His son was thinking the exact same thing as him.
Jake nodded, then said in a more solemn voice, "Mommy has gone to Rheinsville City for nearly a month now, and her birthday is next Wednesday. Do you think we should go and visit her?"
"Visit Mommy?" Leah immediately clapped her hands excitedly when she heard Jake and urged, "Daddy, let’s go visit Mommy! I want to see Mommy!"
"It’s time that you two got to see Mommy. She hasn’t recovered her memory completely, and Rheinsville City is now completely new to her. I’m sure she’s quite unhappy by herself at HG too," Michael said. "I’ll book plane tickets now then."
"Yay!" Leah was the first one to start applauding in approval.
Even though they had regular phone calls, it was different from seeing her.
Jake and Leah had grown up with Wendy constantly by their side, so they missed her badly during this exceptionally long period of separation.
After he had decided, Michael got his phone and started booking their flight.
Wendy was focused on work and completely forgot about her own birthday.
On Tuesday night, the four of them had a video call again.
"Mommy, are you on leave tomorrow? We’re coming to look for you tomorrow," Leah announced with a bright smile. "We’re heading for the airport soon."
"What?" Wendy’s mouth was agape in shock. "You’re all coming to Rheinsville?"
"Uh-huh!" Leah replied. "We’re coming to celebrate your birthday with you!"
