Chapter 267: Don’t Tell Them
A moment later, Wendy’s finger tapped the answer button and she said in a deliberately relaxed tone, "Hello, is this Leah or Jake?"
"Mummy, it’s me, it’s me, it’s Leah," Leah said with a cheerful smile. "Mummy, you should be off work, right? What are you doing now?"
"I’m thinking about you," Wendy’s tone was gentle.
"Mummy, why aren’t you on video today?" Leah said, "Mummy, turn on the video. I want to see you."
"I... " Wendy was afraid they would ask her to turn on the video while she was in the hospital.
If she turned on the video, they would know she was sick, and they would be worried.
"Wendy, turn on the video. I haven’t seen you since yesterday, and both kids and I want to see you today," Michael followed suit.
"This... " Wendy said with a slight sigh. "I’m already in bed after a shower so it’s a bit embarrassing to turn on the video. Tomorrow, I’ll definitely turn on the video."
"We’re all family, so what’s so embarrassing? It’s not like you’re not wearing any clothes." Michael said with a smile, "If it weren’t for the two kids, you could be a little more indecent before opening the video."
Michael’s words with a touch of cheekiness caused Wendy to cough lightly with some embarrassment.
She glanced up at Todd, who was also embarrassed, and looked away.
"I’ll turn on the video tomorrow. I just put on a mask." Wendy declined again by saying, "Leah and Jake are going to school soon, so we’ll video when they get back, okay?"
"Huh?" Leah said somewhat disappointedly, "Can’t Mummy turn it on now?"
"Our Leah, be a good girl, okey?"
"Okay." Leah’s tone was downcast, and she was obviously a little unhappy.
Wendy sighed silently.
"Well, let’s not talk about it anymore. Mummy’s mask is nearly done. I’m going to go wash my face and do my skin care, so we’ll talk tomorrow."
Wendy hurriedly said, "I’ll hang up now."
Wendy was afraid that they would continue to talk, so she hung up the phone directly.
Wendy’s hand holding the phone instantly lost its strength, and the smile on her face also faded.
"Even for the sake of the two children, you should eat well and take care of your health." Todd urged her, "You’re not short of a few days to recuperate."
In the next second, Todd’s cell phone rang.
He turned around and picked up the phone, and all Wendy heard him say was, "Okay, I’ll come back later and take care of it."
Although she didn’t hear what was said on the other end of the phone, Wendy could guess that it was something at the company that he needed to go over and take care of.
After watching Todd hang up the phone, Wendy said, "You go ahead, I’ll be fine."
Afraid that Todd would be worried, Wendy added, "Don’t worry, I can’t go to the office at this hour."
Todd thought about it and agreed. It was already nighttime.
"Then I’ll arrange for someone to come and take care of you," Todd said.
"No, there are nurses in the hospital. Besides, I’m awake. It’s not a big problem, so I can take care of myself. And I’m not comfortable with strangers around. You can go to work without worrying about me," Wendy smiled and waved a hand at Todd.
Todd nodded, gave a few simple instructions, and left.
Something did come up at the company for him.
He went to see Wendy in the afternoon because he was worried she wouldn’t eat on time and ordered a meal to be delivered to her.
After seeing that Wendy had fainted and brought her to the hospital, he stayed here with her. He hadn’t had time to deal with the company’s affairs.
After Todd left, Wendy was left alone in the empty ward.
Wendy was usually so busy that she hardly had any time to rest. Now that she was free, a sense of exhaustion and longing slowly swept through her body.
She picked up her phone, which she had set aside, and opened the photo album. It was full of pictures of Jake, Leah, and Michael. As she looked at them one by one, Wendy smiled.
***
Wendy didn’t stay in the hospital for a few days. The next day, she checked herself out of the hospital.
By the time Todd knew, Wendy was already at the office.
"Corrine, didn’t I tell you to stay in the hospital for a few days? Why are you in such a hurry to go to work? Aren’t you afraid that your body won’t be able to endure?"
Todd’s voice that came through the phone carried some helplessness.
"I asked the doctor, who said as long as I pay more attention to myself and eat on time, I’ll be fine." Wendy said, "Don’t worry, the doctor has prescribed medication and I will take it on time."
Todd knew that Wendy was stubborn, and since she was out of the hospital, there was no way to send her back.
Unless, of course, she fainted again.
This outcome was certainly not what he wanted to see. So, now he had to let her be.
Todd was also busy at work, but he was more worried about Wendy.
Her assistants didn’t dare to bother her, but Todd did.
Fortunately, his company was not far from HG, so Todd started to come to Wendy every day at noon and evening for meals.
On this day, at noon, Todd knocked on Wendy’s office door and said, "Corrine, let’s eat."
"I’ll wait, you go ahead and eat." Wendy lowered her head with her delicate face scrunched up as she looked carefully at the design drawings, which she wasn’t satisfied with and simply tore up the whole sheet.
Then, she took a deep breath, lowered her head and continued drawing.
Todd walked up and picked up the design that Wendy had thrown away.
Then, walking over to her, he snatched her pencil away.
"I said I’ll eat later." Wendy was now focused on the designs and had no desire to eat at all.
Annoyed, she spoke to Todd in a somewhat impatient tone.
Wendy realized that her attitude was a bit out of line, so she looked up at Todd as she apologized and said, "I’m sorry."
Todd wasn’t angry and reached for Wendy’s hand and deliberately said, "If you want me not to be angry, come eat with me right now."
"I... "
Wendy wanted to say something, Todd immediately interrupted her and said, "If you don’t eat on time again, I’ll call Michael and I’ll tell him that you work late until one or two o’clock every day, that you often skip meals, and that you were in the hospital the other day."
"Don’t... " Wendy conceded. She stood up and said, "Don’t tell them."
If Michael knew, she would be in trouble.
Sighing, Wendy smiled helplessly and said, "Okay, let’s eat and go."
Wendy looked at the time and said again, "I’ll take you out to eat. What do you want to eat?"
Todd didn’t care where he ate or what he ate.
He came to HG just to urge Wendy to eat on time.
But if they went out to eat, it would take at least an hour or two for lunch.
This way, Wendy could also have more time to relax.
"It’s a rare treat from Miss Swift, so I’ll have to choose carefully." Todd said, "Let’s go to Chateau Restaurant."
"No problem," Wendy agreed.
As soon as they got in the car, Todd handed Wendy a chocolate bar and said, "Eat this first."
Wendy shook her head and said, "No, we’re going to eat soon, right?"
"Ahem, you’d better eat something first."
Seeing that Todd insisted, Wendy took it and ate it.
However, after the car had been driving for half an hour, Wendy realized why Todd had asked her to eat something first.
The restaurant was too far away.
"Why did you choose such a faraway place?" Wendy frowned slightly in confusion.
It was noon, and usually people wouldn’t pick a place too far from the office to eat.
"This restaurant has a good environment and taste," Todd smiled as he made a gentlemanly and elegant gesture of invitation to let Wendy enter first.
Todd had already made a reservation, and after the waiter took them over, the food was soon served.
Wendy surveyed the environment of the restaurant and said, "The environment is really nice, but aren’t you busy with work? Being this far away does not delay your work?"
"It’s okay." Todd put Wendy’s favorite food in her bowl and said with a smile, "I haven’t been to this restaurant for a long time, so I suddenly wanted to eat their food."
Wendy looked at the dishes in the bowl, nodded slightly and said thank you.
She had wanted to say that it was delaying her work, but today she was the one who said she wanted to treat Todd to a meal.
Wendy had the design on her mind and quickly finished her lunch, then sat anxiously in her chair and watched Todd eat.
Todd ate elegantly and slowly.
"Why aren’t you eating?" Todd once again served her food and said, "Don’t you like it?"
"It’s not that I don’t like it, but I’m full." Wendy smiled a little awkwardly, but in her mind, she was thinking, "Eat quickly so we can get out of here."
Todd had known Wendy for so many years and knew her well. Looking at the anxiety in her eyes, he knew that her mind was probably focused on the design right now.
Wendy had been working too hard during this time, and she needed to rest.
Todd moved more and more slowly as he put a piece of fish on his plate and then, little by little, he carefully picked the fish’s bones and said to Wendy, "Do you want to rest for a bit while waiting for me? I might have to eat for a while."
Todd pointed to the table and continued, "I haven’t been to this restaurant in a long time, and I miss the taste very much."
Todd waved and said to the passing waiter, "Hello, could you take the lady over there to rest for a while, please?"
"Okay." The waiter smiled and made a gesture of invitation as he said, "This way please."
This was a five-star restaurant with a VIP lounge.
Wendy looked at the direction the waiter pointed at and there were big couches over there that must be more comfortable to sit on than here. Wendy saw how delightfully Todd was eating and thought he probably wouldn’t leave any time soon.
If she went to the lounge to wait for him, it would kind of be a disguised way to remind Todd that she had finished eating long ago, so he should eat quickly and leave.
So, Wendy nodded and followed the waiter over there.
Walking into the lounge, Wendy sat on the sofa and looked at Todd’s figure through the glass window. He didn’t seem to have any intention of putting down his utensils.
Wendy sighed and could only wait patiently.
Wendy felt exhausted as she waited, and slowly leaned back on the couch and closed her eyes.
When Todd looked up, he saw that Wendy had fallen asleep on the couch, and finally put down the utensils he was holding.
With a sigh, Todd picked up the drink on the table and took a sip. He had already eaten enough. If Wendy hadn’t fallen asleep, he would have been stuffed.
Todd asked the waiter for a blanket, then gingerly walked into the lounge, and put the blanket over her body.
Looking at Wendy’s pale, tired face, Todd could only sigh again.
