Chapter 227: What Have I Done Wrong

Wendy was a little taken aback by Michael’s words. Michael mentioned before that he hoped that Wendy would not remember about the past. Yet, he offered to accompany her back. Wendy was not so sure if she should check out their old place.

After all these ordeals, she was certain that their relationship in the past was detrimental. But Michael had been very caring to her and the kids now. if she was to recall anything from the past, it would mean that likely the atmosphere and status of their relationship would change.

She had wanted to get her memories back, but now she did not know what to do. She pondered for a while and then said casually,

"Maybe next time. If I want to go, you can accompany me then."

Hearing Wendy’s reply, Michael heaved a sigh of relief. She was not as curious about her past as before. This meant that she had acknowledged the relationship between the two of them. Michael was pleased with this outcome. Something good came out of the entire ordeal. The incident with Winnie did not break them up, but it brought them closer together.

Winnie was sent back to the mansion by the bodyguards. Mrs. Lucas was surprised to see the number of people following behind her.

Supported by her walking cane, she asked, "Nowadays, you need to bring along a whole entourage when you go out?"

She did not remember seeing Winnie had bodyguards with her previously when she left the house.

Winnie did not reply Mrs. Lucas and went straight up, looking pissed and annoyed.

Her attitude made Mrs. Lucas doubt the situation more. Although Mrs. Lucas did not like Winnie, she had been relatively respectful towards Mrs. Lucas, surely not to the extent of ignoring her presence or questions.

Seeing Winnie stomp up the stairs, Mrs. Lucas turned to the bodyguards and asked, "Did something happen?"

The lead bodyguard bowed at Mrs. Lucas and said, "Mr. Lucas has asked us to escort Mrs. Lucas back.

"Michael?" Mrs. Lucas knew it would not be a simple task just to escort her back.

The bodyguard added, "Mr. Lucas also gave instructions, that Mrs. Lucas cannot leave the mansion without his permission."

Mrs. Lucas understood the situation. Seemed like Winnie had done something wrong and that was beyond Michael’s tolerance. Hence, she was confined within the mansion. No wonder she was so pissed.

Mrs. Lucas looked at the bodyguard and asked, "What did she do?"

"Apologies Mrs. Lucas, but we can’t tell you without Mr. Lucas’s orders." It was not up to the bodyguards to rattle it out to Mrs. Lucas. After all, they were employed by Michael. As his bodyguards, they needed to keep their mouths in check, especially when it concerned their employer.

Mrs. Lucas did not make things difficult for the bodyguards and dismissed them off.

The bodyguards left the mansion and kept watch outside the mansion.

Mrs. Lucas made her way upstairs with her walking cane. When she reached Winnie’s room, she was about to knock on the door when she heard Winnie screaming her head off on the phone.

"Lily, you wretch! Don’t be too arrogant. As long as I don’t get divorced, so what if Anthony brings you along for all major events. So what if he buys you as much exquisite and expensive jewellery? You are just a mistress who cannot be given an official title."

When Winnie got home, she received a call from Lily. Every sentence from Lily was just to show off and ridicule Winnie. She asked Winnie to go have a look at her Facebook and see where Anthony brought her to the day before.

Winnie opened the app on her phone and saw a group photo at a gala. It was a birthday gala organized by Edwards Holdings. Anthony had not established good connections with Edwards Holdings yet so he had to be present.

He decided to bring Lily along without informing Winnie about this event at all.

Anthony even gifted Lily a set of jewellery that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In the photo, Lily looked exceptionally happy as she interlocked her arm with Anthony’s. The smile made Winnie so mad that she wanted to go into her phone to fight it out with Lily.

"So what if I am the mistress? You, the official wife, is just a title and you have nothing." Lily said those words to purposely spike her.

"Anthony has been bringing me along for events. The wives of the affluent circle all know about me and my status. You having the title of the ’wife by law’, becomes the joke among them. You haven’t heard how people discuss about you behind your back. Should I be a kind soul and repeat them for you?"

Lily smirked, "Oh right. Remember Mrs. Jones, the lady whom you always hang out with previously? We went shopping together the day before and she gifted me a silk scarf. And Mrs. Kleins and Mrs. Linton... Winnie, you are just a pathetic woman. Your husband doesn’t love you. Even your friends, are now my friends."

"Friends? Pfft. They are not worthy of being my friends!" Winnie took a deep breath to calm herself down. Then with an indifferent tone, she said, "those people are just sitting on the fence. Today they hang out with you, then the next thing you know, they will talk bad about you. These people are not worth mentioning at all!"

"Indeed, they are not worth mentioning." Lily said. "What about Anthony? Think about how long Anthony has not been home. When was the last time you saw him?"

"You..." Winnie could not take it anymore. She slammed the phone on the floor.

The last thing Lily heard was the flat tone after being hung upon. She smirked to herself.

Anthony just got back home and he took off his coat. He saw that Lily was on the phone and asked casually, "Who were you talking on the phone with? You look happy."

Lily walked over to take the coat from Anthony and hung it up in the closet. She laughed, "It was Mrs. Jones. She asked if I want to go shopping with her tomorrow."

"I see." Anthony sat on the sofa and looked at her. "Can you whip up some pasta for me? I am hungry."

"Okay. I’ll go cook now." Lily bent over to kiss Anthony on his forehead. With that, she happily skipped into the kitchen.

On the other hand, in Winnie’s room, there were sounds of shattering glass. Mrs. Lucas pushed open the door and the vase Winnie was holding onto flew straight in her direction. Luckily the vase shattered beside Mrs. Lucas’s feet, but that gave Mrs. Lucas quite a fright.

Winnie got a shock too. She hurried over to Mrs. Lucas, "Mother, are you okay?"

Mrs. Lucas looked at the shattered pieces on the floor. She frowned as she stomped her cane on the floor several times. "What are you doing? What is all this?"

"I..." Winnie’s eyes were red as she looked down slightly.

Mrs. Lucas walked into the room and sat on a chair. She propped her walking stick beside her. She raised her head and sighed. "Was that call from Lily?" Mrs. Lucas was smart. She had guessed it.

Winnie nodded as tears welled up in her eyes and rolled down her cheeks.

Winnie walked over to Mrs. Lucas and kneeled in front of her. She reached for Mrs. Lucas’s hands as she wailed, "Mother, how could they do this to me? Anthony betrayed me. Michael doesn’t listen to me. What on earth have I done wrong to deserve such ill fate?"

"It is true that Anthony betrayed you. But what did Michael do to you?" Mrs. Lucas remained objective and she was not swayed by her pitiful stance. She was here to find out what happened in the first place.

"Michael..." Winnie could not tell Mrs. Lucas what happened earlier. Mrs. Lucas had always favored Wendy. If she had confessed, Mrs. Lucas would side with Wendy for sure.

Winnie raised her hand to wipe off her tears. Looking away and avoiding eye contact with Mrs. Lucas, she said, "Never mind."
