Chapter 193: Admitting He’s Selfish
Michael’s mind was currently engaged in a tug of war with itself.
Wendy did him wrong in the past. Was he going to selfishly suppress Wendy’s memories now? However, it was precisely because he had done her wrong that he wished she would not recover her memories. Otherwise, he might not even have a chance to redeem himself.
Dr. Lee stood on one side, listening awkwardly to Michael and Zen’s conversation.
Michael had not said he could leave so he dared not walk away.
Turning to Dr. Lee, Michael asked solemnly, "Dr, Lee, what would you do if you were in my place?"
Dr. Lee might have heard their conversation in its entirety, but he still had no idea what the full story was. However, he knew what Michael was driving at with his question.
Michael just needed someone to affirm his decision.
"Mr. Lucas, if the memory is really painful, it might not necessarily be a bad thing to be able to forget. I think I understand. You have done something wrong in the past and do not wish for Mrs. Lucas to remember, right? If I were in your place, I would ask myself if I really love her, if I could make up for whatever wrong I have done to her 10 times or even a hundred times over in the future. If I couldn’t, I would let her choose if she wished to remember. If I am sure I love her a lot, and she loves me the same without those memories, are those memories that important?"
Dr. Lee was more or less aware of everything Michael had done for Wendy during the time she was in the hospital.
Since they loved each other, it was better if there was nothing that would mar their relationship. Otherwise, it might forever become a thorn in their side.
With a deep sigh, Dr. Lee said, "Mr. Lucas, if you really wish for Mrs. Lucas to never remember those things, I can help you."
Seeing that Michael was still undecided, Dr. Lee added, "I can control your wife’s condition with medication. Since I can prescribe medication that will aid in recovering those memories, I can also prescribe medication that will suppress them."
Dr. Lee’s words were like a ticking time bomb that had finally gone off inside him.
He admitted he was selfish. He was terrified that Wendy would hate him after she remembered everything.
Fists clenched tightly, Michael took a deep breath. He asked, "Will there be any side effects?"
"Don’t worry. I will prescribe quality medication that barely has any side effects," Dr. Lee assured.
Zen had not actually left. Hidden in the shadow of a recessed doorway, she observed Michael’s interaction with the doctor.
When she saw that Michael had ultimately chosen to suppress Wendy’s memories,
she smiled.
Soon, however, the smile dropped off her face.
She knew she was betraying Wendy’s trust and their friendship.
When Michael returned to the room, other than Wendy, only Mary, his grandmother, and the two children were there.
Mrs. Lucas looked at Michael’s face and noticed he seemed a little pale. With a voice filled with concern, she asked, "Michael, are things going badly at work? Or are you not feeling well?"
Michael shook his head. Smiling, he walked to Mrs. Lucas, stopping behind her and massaging her shoulders. "Nothing is wrong. Everything is fine."
"Don’t lie to me. If you don’t feel well, we’re in a hospital. Get yourself checked out," Mrs. Lucas said anxiously. "You’ve been taking care of Wendy round the clock since she’s been hospitalized, and you still have to take care of the company. You must be exhausted. Don’t tire yourself out."
Guilt arose in Wendy at Mrs. Lucas’s words. It was all her fault Michael was exhausted.
Luckily, she would be getting discharged the next day. Once she was out of the hospital, things would not be so hard for Michael.
...
Wendy had a speedy recovery. She only needed to visit the hospital for regular checks for her eyes from now on.
Therefore, Wendy went through the discharge procedures the next day.
She had been in the hospital for nearly a month, so the discharge was such a relief to her.
Finally, she could leave this place.
Standing at the gate of the hospital, Wendy took a deep breath and could not help smiling.
At this time, Michael was holding one child in each hand.
After letting two kids in the car, Michael turned back to open the door on the passenger seat side and gently made a please gesture. "My Lady Queen, please get in the car."
Seeing Michael’s actions, Wendy could not help but deepen her smile. "Thank you."
After getting in the car, Wendy fastened the seat belt and asked, "Where are we going?"
She had not yet remembered the past.
Accordingly, she could not remember where she lived after returning to Lake City as well.
Subconsciously, Wendy asked, "Since we are married, we should have a matrimonial home before."
Hearing Wendy talking about the matrimonial home, Michael’s hand holding the steering wheel stiffened.
There were too many bad memories in that place.
Michael drove the car and said, "I have a lot of properties under my name. I will take you to a villa with a few servants. How is it?"
"A villa?" Wendy thought for a while. As far as she was concerned, a villa is too spacious for four of them to live in; she said, "It is okay. Let’s go back to the place where we lived before."
Wendy was referring to the place where they lived together at one time.
At this time, it was hard for Michael to say that they had not lived together before. But if he did take Wendy back to that neighborhood, Michael was afraid that she would think of the past once she saw something familiar.
Over the years, Michael had been living in that house, and the furnishings and decorations inside had remained unchanged.
Wendy did not hear Michael’s answer. She turned her head towards him and found his expression a little solemn.
After being silent for a while, Wendy said, "Did we have a lot of bad memories before?"
Undoubtedly, Michael did not want to take her back, which Wendy could somehow guess that as well.
Unlike Michael, Wendy wanted to recall the past.
Regardless of whether the past between them is good or bad, she wanted to know.
Then returning to the place they used to live in and looking at familiar surroundings might help Wendy restore her memory.
"Okay, I’ll take you there." Michael did not answer Wendy’s question directly.
Since Wendy wanted to go there, Michael could not keep stopping her.
It was just that Michael had some ulterior motive.
Therefore, instead of taking Wendy back to her place, he took her to another housing estate.
Wendy had lost her memory and could not remember where she used to live.
Jake and Leah have never been to the old place, so they dId not know where it was either.
It is a luxury housing estate, and Michael brought Wendy into the house.
Wendy looked at the expensively decorated room. It was so beautiful and delicate, matching her favorite style.
However, there was no memory of this house in her mind.
Leah looked around with widening eyes. She smiled and asked, "Daddy, Mummy, did you live here before?"
Michael stroked her head and admitted with a guilty conscience.
"It’s so beautiful." Leah asked, "Which room is mine?"
"Leah, go and pick whichever you would like to live in." Michael smiled and said to the twins,
"Jake, you can also take a look."
