Chapter 143: Plan

Wendy had seen all the comments online too. But she didn’t pity Winnie at all since Winnie deserved every single bit of it. She picked up her cup to drink some water, only to find that her cup was empty. So, she got up to head to the pantry to get more water.

She had only taken two steps towards her door when she heard a commotion outside her office.

"What on earth?! Mr. Lucas is moving his office back downstairs again? Are you serious?"

"Duh! There were cleaners tidying up the office and so many movers are here to move all his things. Of course, it’s really happening."

"So, Mr. Lucas has decided to go after Miss Swift again? I’m going to ship this couple!"

"Mr. Lucas was even willing to cut ties with his mother for her sake! Any woman would have been touched by that!"

*****

After hearing all those comments, Wendy put her cup back down and walked out of her office.

A large group of movers was indeed carrying furniture and boxes into the office next to hers. The employees who were gossiping earlier saw that Wendy had walked out, so they kept quiet again, but they continued to look in her direction.

In no time, Michael himself came down and walked towards her.

Those employees were probably right. Michael was actually moving into the office next to hers again.

Did her words of gratitude rekindle a hope in Michael’s heart again?

But when Michael walked past her, he just smiled politely at her and continued walking towards the other office.

He slowed his steps down by a lot, as if he was waiting for Wendy to follow him into his new office.

She pursed her lips and her expression grew grim. What was he trying to do now?

After hesitating for a while, she decided to walk into his office.

He was already seated behind his desk by then. He looked up and wasn’t surprised to see her standing in his office.

"Miss Swift, do you need something?" he asked.

That was a question Wendy asked him the most often whenever he used to look for her in her office.

She had meant to ask him about this move, but after he asked her a question first, she suddenly didn’t know how to phrase her question.

If she asked him, that would be playing into his hands. But he was obviously waiting for her to ask and probably already thought of how to answer her before this. And if his answer was something like, "MC Enterprise is my company, so I can move my office anywhere I like," she wouldn’t be able to refute that.

So, she just shrugged and said, "Nothing, really. I just wanted to see how your new office looks like."

"Oh? What do you think of it?" He smiled faintly at her, even though he was really brimming with joy.

"It’s not bad." She smiled back politely and said, "I shan’t take up your time."

Then she walked out of his office again.

Once she was back in her own office, she decided that she couldn’t let this go. Otherwise, he was going to keep harassing her like what he did the last time.

Just thinking about the way he pestered her so relentlessly after she first returned to Lake City annoyed her greatly. But she didn’t want to confront him personally either.

After thinking about it, she paged for Jill.

"Come in for a while."

Jill quickly walked into her office.

"Go next door and check out the situation with Mr. Lucas," said Wendy. "Also, remind him that it’s impossible between us."

Sure, Jill responded as she cheerfully accepted this mission.

Jill sauntered into Michael’s office and smirked as she said confidently, "How’s that? I told you she’d definitely tell me to look for you."

Michael now saw Jill in a different light. He thought that Jill might not have been serious about helping him.

"What did Wendy ask you to tell me?" he asked.

"What else? She told me to tell you that it’s impossible between the two of you." She picked up an orange on his desk and tossed it between her hands.

She had been the one who told him to move into the office next to Wendy’s.

He tapped a finger on the desk and his expression became a little serious as he asked, "Do I really have to follow the plan?"

"If you have a better one, then go ahead," she said. "But if it fails, you can forget about having a second chance to try again."

He fell into deep thought. Before this, he had been very confident in himself. But all that self-confidence had evaporated after his interaction with Wendy during this time. And now, it seemed like Jill was really going to be of help to him. He had no other choice but to pin his hopes on her.

He nodded like he had made a major decision in his life and said, "All right then, we’ll go according to your plan."

She gave him an OK sign and put the orange back down.

Then she walked back into Wendy’s office.

"Miss Swift, I’ve already passed Mr. Lucas the message you asked me to," said Jill.

"What did he say?" Wendy looked up at her and waited for her response.

"What else?" Jill sighed and said disappointedly, "He said that MC Enterprise is his, so he can move his office anywhere he likes. He also said that if you think that he’s affecting your work, then you can move to anywhere else in the office."

"What?!" Wendy was annoyed when she heard his response. She was glad that she hadn’t asked him herself, otherwise they might be arguing by now.

"Wendy..." Jill suddenly came very close to her with a sly grin and an eager look on her face. "Do you really dislike Mr. Lucas that much?"

"Huh?" Wendy wasn’t expecting a question like that. "What do you mean?

"Nothing really." Jill purposely looked down and pretended to look a little shy. "Actually, I think you really should give Mr. Lucas a chance. He really loves you a lot. If you miss a good man like him, then..."

"Stop right there!" Wendy frowned when she realized that Jill was trying her best to put in a good word for Michael. "What else did he say to you? Why are you speaking up for him now?"

"He didn’t say anything to me. I just think it’s been hard for him." Jill grinned and asked again, "So, tell me. Do you really dislike him?"

When Wendy didn’t answer her, she tugged on Wendy’s sleeve and started to whine, ’Do you? Do you? Do youuuuu?

"Are you recording this? Or is Michael just outside the door?" Wendy glanced towards her door when she realized that Jill was acting strangely.

Her first thought was to suspect that Jill was trying to trap her into saying something she didn’t mean.

"Why are you asking those questions?" Jill’s expression fell. "Do I look like that sort of person to you?"

"Fine, I’ll tell you then," said Wendy. "You already know that I’ve submitted my resignation to your father. So, once the board has made a decision, I may return to Rheinsville City soon. I’ve never intended to remain in Lake City. Do you understand what I mean?

"In other words, you’ve never even considered getting back together with Mr. Lucas." Jill seemed very happy to hear that.

Wendy frowned even harder at this odd reaction from Jill. "What tricks are you up to?"

"I’m not up to any tricks." Jill kept the grin on her face as she let go of Wendy’s sleeve and walked towards the door. "I’m going back to work."

Wendy watched as Jill walked out happily. Why was this girl behaving so strangely today?

Then again, Jill was young, and she did have a rather quirky and rebellious personality, so Wendy dismissed it.

At noon time, someone knocked on Wendy’s door.

It was Michael.

"Hello, Miss Swift. Would you like to have lunch together?" he asked.

First, he moved into the office next to hers. Next, he asked her out to lunch. That was exactly what he did the last time.

It annoyed Wendy, but her relationship with Michael was a little different now.

He had helped her out the day before, so it wasn’t nice of her to turn him down outright.

After thinking about it, she rejected him politely, "I need to attend to some work, you can go ahead."

"It’s all right, I can wait for you," he said.

"I might take some time..." Before she could finish her sentence, Jill walked into the office.

She looked surprised to see Michael in the. office as well and said, "Mr. Lucas, are you here to ask Miss Swift out to lunch too?"

He nodded.

"Wendy, why don’t we all go for lunch together?" Jill asked Wendy.

Wendy buried her head in the documents in front of her as if she was terribly busy and replied without even looking up, "I still have some work to finish and it’s quite urgent. I’ll eat after I’m done."

Since she just told Michael that she was too busy to eat with him, she couldn’t possibly tell Jill she could go for lunch with her. That would be contradicting herself.

"Oh..." Jill then turned to Michael and smiled. "Shall we have lunch together then, Mr. Lucas?"

"Well, that..."

Before Michael could say anything, Jill grabbed hold of Michael’s hand and said, "Let’s go, let’s go! Since neither of us has anybody to eat with, we might as well eat together."

Michael got dragged out of the office by Jill.

Wendy watched them leave her office and looked rather puzzled. What was going on?

Jill hadn’t joined the company for long, but because she was her assistant plus, she was pretty and spoke eloquently, she had made a number of friends in the company fairly quickly.

She had plenty of people to eat lunch with. So, why did she want to eat with Michael today?

Her first instinct was to follow them out. But she had just told them that she had work to do, so she gave that thought up.

She decided to just let it go. Jill did strange and crazy things sometimes anyway.

The only problem was Wendy was actually starting to feel hungry.

Once Michael and Jill were out of Wendy’s office, he pushed Jill’s hand away and kept his distance from her.

Jill couldn’t help but laugh at his actions. "Oh wow, what a chaste man you are. Don’t worry, when it comes to..."

She looked him up and down, then said in a rather grudging manner, "When it comes to old men like you, I’m not interested at all."

It was true that Michael was considered old to Jill. She was only 23 after all. But Michael’s face fell immediately.

She was afraid that he had gotten angry, So she quickly added, "We’re just outside Wendy’s office, so if she sees through our plan, it won’t be my fault."

He swallowed everything he meant to say to Jill and decided to bear with it for the time being. Winning Wendy’s heart back was his first priority now.
