Chapter 142: My Promise Is Worth A Lot Of Money

Jill was pretty annoyed that she hadn’t managed to get any details out of Wendy. But Wendy wasn’t the only main character in this whole story.

An idea hit her, and a smile slowly spread across her face.

She got into the elevator and pressed the button for the 88th floor. She was going to head straight for the office of the other main character, Michael Lucas.

Michael was indeed a little surprised to see that it was Jill who had knocked on his door. He hadn’t talked much to her, but his impression of her was very deep.

After all, Jill had gotten Wendy to act as herself when she first returned to Lake City as Corrine.

"The smile on your face tells me you’re still in a good mood." Jill didn’t purposely speak deferentially just because she held a low position in the company. She continued to speak with her usual confidence.

Michael knew that she was Timothy’s daughter, as well as a person close to Wendy, and he was in a good mood anyway, so he didn’t take offense at the way she spoke to him.

"Did Wendy ask you to tell me something?" His first thought was that Wendy had sent Jill here.

"Nope," said Jill as she wagged a finger. "I came up here on my own accord."

"On your own accord?" The smile on Michael’s face faded as he frowned. "I don’t think there’s a need for us to interact privately."

"Listen to yourself. Now I know why you’ve not managed to win Wendy’s heart." Jill shook her head and looked so disappointed.

Michael didn’t quite understand what she was driving at.

If Jill were just another employee in the company, he would have chased her out by now. But someone like her wouldn’t have bothered to come all the way here for nothing, so he waited for her to elaborate.

"Mr. Lucas, did you exchange all your EQ for more IQ to run the company?" said Jill without pulling any punches.

Michael was a reputable man who managed a large enterprise, so he wasn’t too happy hearing such a comment from this young lady.

"Just get straight to the point." He only had the patience for anything related to Wendy. If Jill continued to beat around the bush or what she wanted to say had nothing to do with Wendy, he was going to kick her out of his office.

Jill sighed and shook her head. "Mr. Lucas, let me ask you. Who am I?"

"You’re Jil, Timothy Woods’ only daughter," he replied. "Your father is powerful, and I respect him, but I’m not afraid of him. Do you understand what I’m trying to say?" 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"Are you the one not getting it or am I the one who’s not getting it?!" Jill nearly fainted in exasperation.

She decided to put it more directly. "Forget it. Look, I’m Corrine’s assistant, but I’m also her friend, her buddy and as close to her as a sister. Do you get it now?"

"So?" Michael didn’t get it.

Jill nearly cursed out loud. She took a deep breath and held herself back.

"So... if you want to win Wendy’s heart, don’t you think you ought to get me on your side? Then I’ll help to put in a few good words for you and arrange things between you guys!" she explained. "I’m the person closest to Wendy right now, after all."

She added, "To be more precise, I’m the closest person to Wendy who would be of help to you. Jake’s too young to help you with anything. I’ve put it very clearly now. If you still don’t get it, then I don’t know how else to explain this."

This time, she was sure that Michael understood her. His EQ was low, but he wasn’t stupid.

The impatient look in Michael’s eyes turned to one of hope.

She pointed at his chair.

He was really annoyed by the smug look on her face, but he had to admit that she was right. She was indeed the closest person to Wendy who could actually help him. So, he decided to bear with it. He got up and let Jill sit on his chair instead.

Jill sat on Michael’s chair, gave it a good spin and nodded satisfactorily. "Your chair is indeed a lot more comfortable to sit on. The chair I have is so hard."

Michael immediately said, "Tell me what sort of chair you want and I’ll buy it for you."

"I’m so glad you’re generous." Jill seized the chance to complain, "Not like Wendy. She was so reluctant to let me claim for my broken phone. It’s not as if I was asking her for money."

But of course, Jill was just joking.

"I’ll agree to any request you have, as long as you can help me get back together with Wendy." Michael just wanted to know if Jill could really help him and how.

"You know, I thought you would come looking for me a long time ago." Jill wiped the cheeky smile off her face. "Since you’ve known about my relationship with Wendy all this time, why didn’t it occur to you to ask me about what happened to Wendy in Rheinsville over the last five years?"

This thought had seriously never occurred to Michael.

Right from the start, he had been confident that Wendy still loved him and would return to his side sooner or later.

Then when he found out that Wendy didn’t love him anymore, he decided to leave her alone and let her live her own life.

Jill saw the serious expression on Michael’s face and knew that she had gotten the effect she wanted, so she quickly pounced on the opportunity. "Let’s make a deal. You tell me what happened between both of you five years ago. Why does Wendy hate you so much? Why is she back specifically to take revenge on you? Then I’ll tell you everything that happened to Wendy in Rheinsville as well as help you win her heart. How’s that?"

She was really here to hear about what happened between Michael and Wendy five years ago. Helping Michael win Wendy back was just an excuse.

She was just so curious to find out what happened back then. Michael’s gaze grew grimmer and grimmer, so she could tell that their story must have been really complicated but exciting to hear.

"Five years ago, I let Wendy down," Michael finally uttered after falling into deep thought for a long time.

"How exactly?" Jill quickly asked.

"Before coming to ask me, I’m sure you must have asked Wendy about us many times," said Michael. "Since Wendy didn’t tell you anything about our past, I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to tell you either."

That was only one of the reasons. He was also afraid that Jill would think of him as a huge jerk after telling her what happened five years ago. Then she might change her mind about helping him, and that was not what he wanted.

"Mr. Lucas, that’s not..." He didn’t let her finish her sentence and said, "Look, I know you’re on very good terms with Wendy, so I’m sure you also hope that Wendy can put her past behind her and live happily, right?"

She pursed her lips and didn’t say anything. She did want Wendy to be happy, but her main aim was to find out what happened first!

He continued, "Just like I said earlier, go ahead and tell me what you want. I’ll give it to you as long as I’m able to."

She remained silent.

He added, "I’m the president of MC Enterprise. My promise is worth a lot of money."

She now seemed to be contemplating her options very seriously.

"If you want to know what happened between us five years ago, I’ll tell you about it after Wendy and I get back together, okay?" He finally compromised a little since Jill wasn’t budging.

Once he got back together with Wendy, it didn’t matter if Jill knew their past or not anyway. Jill was disappointed that she wasn’t successful in getting the story out of Michael. But at the same time, she did want to help Michael get back together with Wendy.

After all, Michael had nearly cut ties with his own mother in order to protect Wendy. In her opinion, this was enough to prove that Michael did love Wendy.

Based on that alone, she was willing to help Michael. Also, she did want Wendy to stop dwelling on the past and lead a life of bliss. She smiled faintly and raised her palm for a high five. "Deal!"

He smiled as well and gave her a high five. Then he asked, "So, will you tell me what happened to Wendy over the past five years now?"

"Nuh uh," Jill refused and just grinned at him cheekily. "I’m not telling you until you tell me what happened five years ago."

Winnie’s visit to Wendy’s office at MC Enterprise blew up pretty badly.

Even though the media didn’t report on it since it happened within the company, so many employees had witnessed what happened and took plenty of videos and photos while it happened, so it went viral on social media.

The comments and reposts simply refused to stop.

"What cold-blooded creature is this Winnie Quinn? She doesn’t even want her grandson?"

"She doesn’t behave like a classy rich woman at all. Did you guys see how she screamed and shouted on the floor? It’s unbelievable."

"I can’t believe how perfect Mr. Lucas is! How does someone this rich, this handsome and this protective of his wife even exist?!"

"Mr. Lucas has been waiting for Wendy Stewart to return for the past five years, and it seems this Corrine Swift is Wendy Stewart. Mr. Lucas’s wish has finally come true and I hope they will live happily ever after."

"With such a mother-in-law, I’m not sure if that happily ever after is possible. "

After reading all the comments on various social media platforms, Winnie was so angry that she flung her phone aside.

Thankfully, the phone landed on the couch. Otherwise, it would have broken into several pieces after she flung it so hard.

Just then, her phone started ringing. It was a number she didn’t recognize. She was in a foul mood, so she picked up the call and roared, "Who’s that?!"

"Wow, you’re really angry, huh?" Lily laughed on the other end of the line. "Looks like everything I’ve seen online is true after all. If I were you, I’d be too embarrassed to even step out of my own house."

"Lily Yates!" Winnie hissed her name as she gritted her teeth. "Don’t get too smug! For as long as I refuse to divorce Anthony, you’d always be a filthy mistress who can never see the light of day!"

"I might be a mistress, but my life’s better than yours," Lily mocked Winnie. "I’ve got a man who loves me and a son who’s filial to me. What about you? Your husband is hardly home, and your son nearly cut ties with you over another Woman. I don’t see how you can still be this arrogant."

"You bloody little vamp!" Winnie was so angry her entire body was heaving.

Lily had purposely made this call to anger Winnie. Thinking of how furious Winnie must look right now made her laugh merrily. She was about to say more when Winnie flung her phone away again.

This time, the phone crashed heavily on the floor and broke, so she didn’t hear anything else Lily had to say.

Winnie was so furious that she began to grab anything within arms’ reach and smashed them against the floor and wall.

The servants heard the commotion and wanted to enter her bedroom out of concern, but Winnie shrieked at all of them to get out.

They told Mrs. Lucas about the situation, so she walked over with her walking stick, only to hear more things getting smashed.

She knocked on the door, but all she heard was Winnie’s hysterical screaming, "Get out! All of you! Just get out of my sight!"

After that, she could hear Winnie wail and cry.

She took her hand back and sighed as she looked at the shut door in front of her. She had heard about what happened in the office the day before. But Winnie had it coming.

After sighing again, she turned around and said to the servants, "Let her be."

Since Winnie was the cause of all this trouble, she could deal with it herself.

All these years, Mrs. Lucas had put up with Winnie because she wanted to make up for her son’s infidelity. But any guilt she felt towards Winnie had also faded over time.

She advised Winnie to get a divorce, but Winnie refused. Instead, she threw tantrums and kicked up a big fuss at home from time to time.

Each time Anthony came home, they either ended up arguing or nearly killing one another, giving Mrs. Lucas such a terrible headache.

This time, Winnie’s plans didn’t work out and even backfired on her. It was high time she suffered the consequences of her actions.
